, you have a journey of self-discovery to make so you can be YOU and not Pino
yes definitely this otherwise you run the risk of sounding like a 12 year old japanese youtube schoolgirl drumming along to la villa strangiato -
I have never expressed this view upon seeing any bass player play because I fully believe that with the right amount of dedication, persistence and hard work, anyone can play anything that anyone else can play. I hear and read the phrase a lot though. If this is a realistic acknowledgement of lack of time, pressures of everyday life, etc. I understand. However, if it's due to a perceived lack of talent, or the idea that it would be impossible for one to reach a particular standard, I say that's rubbish.
reproducing a phrase mechanically is the easy part - getting the feel and expression is the real trick - if you can do both then you've pretty much totally nailed it but if you don't manage to nail both aspects then which to aim for... sloppy awkward looking technique but sounds great or great looking ergonomic efficient technique but with all the expression of a bad 1980s sequencer ? -
I guess it's one way to address that issue. Now write a label and attach it to teh chisel. The label should read: "ask BC for hints before using this again on a guitar"
haha i dont give a bugger me - they are practical giging instruments and im fairly confident about hacking them about to get them working just how i want them - i used to be a draughtsman craftsman so i have steady hand for those sort of jobs the opnly thing that really lets me down these days is my eyesight which has deteriorated rapidly with my age so now i need to get hold of a big magnifying glass on a stand to cope with these jobs - my vmJ bridge modification is workable and passable and not visible from a distance - it was only my eyesight that let me bugger up a couple of small sections around the pocket into which i sunk the bridge plate anyways im interested to know more about these half pots and exactly how they cause the sound to be a bit sheepish and any recommendations of where to get replacements please thank you very much -
btw: Instead of attacking the body with a chisel, putting a shim in the neck pocket would have given your the adjustment you need.
shimmed it and didnt like it - too much squeaking and creaking and a tiny amount of movement - not a big fan of shimming as the heel contact is never 100% - call me old and fussy but id rather hack lumps out of the body than shim the neck -
These are good basses. The pickups are quite punchy. The Duncan designed pups are known for being punchy. The problem with these guitars are the half pots....... They are sh*t and can make the bass sound wooly. Upgrade the pots it should cost you about £10.
apologies for my ignorance but what are half pots and where do i go to find replacements for my vmJ which is still stock apart from the bridge (which i have hacked away a chunk of the body with a sharp chisel to lower the gotoh bridge down flush to enable better adjustment)? -
Plantation is stopping music as well, IIRC
I think i recall from their facebook page they have had one band since us and maybe another one left but i think this is their last weekend under current manager
is elm stable enough for a bass body? I've a friend who has elm floorboards and they are renowned for moving quite a lot...
it was sat in my shed since about mid 80s so has been well seasoned over 25+ years - i took it to local timber merchants who machine planed it flat for me and then i set about drawing up a CAD file to take it off to a local CnC router but alas things took a slightly different turn and as you can see jabba has made a rather nice job of it - and unique too, much more interesting than my plans for another boring old frankenJ

watches thread with interest as i have the same vmj with dd pups - i assumed that the woolliness and lowish output i was experiencing was due to the black nylons -
Can anyone help with this? Frustrated :(
I've been trying to rake it back but just hitting the string in the middle on the way. So annoying!
not necessarily bad as long as you did it precisley sort of and in good time so that the middle note is muted that way you hear the first and third note playing the octave and the middle note muted i do this on bad girls and hot stuff - try to get all three notes clean but usually the middle one comes out clipped - it just takes lots and lots of repetition to get it rolling off your fingertips accuratley -

What to do - can't be doing with 5'ers anymore!

i had a brief dabble with a 6 but that doesnt count cos the higher string balances the other way and cancels out the low one -
Some great stuff there, I like it simple and clean. I think I must be at odds with the general Rotosound Facebook demographic, as a lot of my favourite designs have bugger all likes, yet some ofnthe most popular ones are IMO really clichéd. Ah well.
i think these competitions need to be approached with practicality in mind - plenty of the designs on there are fine on paper but many people have overlooked obvious design issues (not least the dimensions stated on the brief) the fact they have stated 300mm square design area correpsonds directly to a budget they will be working to for the production of the t-shirts (hence my comment earlier on this thread about designs for two years olds being a direct reference to the dimensions of some of the designs) and colour too will affect the final choice - have kept it to one colour (blak on white or white on black) and the corporate rotosound orange - i would pretty much guarantee they will not go for anything multi-coloured because of production costs - screen printed or heat transfer printed can also have a bearing on the design choice- heat transfer print will not lend itself particularly well to to intricate fiddly designs thats just the basic production practicalities - then theres the design issues such as producing a full body wrap design which looks great on paper while not taking into account that you wouldnt be viewing the design as such because it will ultimately be wrapped around a semi-cylindrical body the only design dilema i had was whether to write Schwiiiing! or Schwing or Swingbass but chose Schwing eventually - the orange and the logo ties it in and swingbass is such a well known product that most bassists should make the connection (not sure about drummers though)
