Over thinking when playing - is it just me?
steve-bbb replied to Osiris's topic in General Discussion
only usually right at the intro even on iconic stuff like rescue me with that simple distinctive bass intro i often find im asking myself and the rest of the band 'how does it go?' -

well i guess a big part of the difference in feel is in the widely varying approach to technique required by the fretted and unfretted broadly speaking shape and dimesions the same will be a very similar feel but because of the different approach to technique required you need to play them differently to get the desired tone and effect so imho its not quite the same as trying to compare say a fretted squire J with a fretted fender J
-
no edit - i have a fretty J and got myself a vm unfretted from this very forum they are both shaped the same and same dimensions but the similarity pretty much ends there both different weights differnt pups hence completely different sounds controls on the supposedly better model noisy as anything and crackly just remembered one other similarity is that they both have a tendecny for the G string to drop tension when not being played hope this helps

Loud guitarist under control - at last!
steve-bbb replied to Skinnyman's topic in General Discussion
has anybody experienced a guitarer who has had their hearing damaged in that frequncy range by long term exposure to high sound levels? our old guitarist we suspect might have been a wee bit in this category , as he understood perfectly well about getting a good overall mix and sound balance but his guitar was always way over the the top -

we have done a fair few charity gigs this year as well as the one i mention above - but they are usually where we have been requested to play directly and are the only band on the lineup - some have been for expenses for example one gig we asked for 120 (6x20 each for travel expenses) and some like curry and band fundraiser evening we get fed too which is nice - one of our gigs led the booker (who is an events organiser) to book us for a large corporate function - all in all we have been very fortunate with charity gigs so far but as others have mentioned it is very easy to get on people's 'call up this band they did it for free last year' list

here's the gig (two saturdays ago) Childrens Hospice for palliative care for Children with terminal and life threatening conditions Staff and families organise an annual summer mini festival and local bands give their time free as does the marquee, lighting, and sound supply all systems and provide three guys for the day Photographer/videographer provides services for the day for free too Bands just roll up all throughout the day and play their hour set (we were first on, Jamie Johnson was the final act plus several other all through the afternoon) The audience is unlike any you will most likely encounter at any gig , about ten kids live in at the hospice with ages ranging from about 4 to older teenagers all with parents, nursing staff with them in all manner of hi-tech wheelchairs and even beds in the marquee as some are totally confined to their beds. The staff even make up wristbands and laminate passes and other paraphenalia for them to just like a big festival. Absolutely everything is supplied and provided and manned and operated totally free. Charity gigs are not all about some young inexperienced wannabee promoter chancing their arm at hosting an event at which the only visible indicator of any charitable association is probably a banner hanging across the stage. Sometimes you are actually right there 'face to face' with 'the charity' It does tend to make quite a bit of difference! edit - and the sounds guys were so good our drummer left his full kit and I left my rig on stage for the duration for the other bands to use - they all did and all looked after it edit edit - and in response to the final para of the OP post, if you had been there you would have seen that it is simply not possible to put a price on this sort of thing

just spotted this on notreble.com http://youtu.be/RhJN0H57sgA -
but on the other hand it could be quite useful as it would be able to carry an 8x10 and all the rest of its own gear from van to venue in one trip
Ha! Yep, this...Friday was sausage and chips with overdone pizza slices, Saturday a very small pork-pie-and-sausage-roll affair. Both well below par - a prawn vol-au-vent would have been welcomed.
wow - sounds like we are well and truly spoiled at our gigs gives me an idea to start up another thread
That's my take on it too. We all know that the most important issue in a band is for everyone to get on, so the best thing to do in an ad is be as honest as possible about what you're looking for and hopefully filter out any bad matches before even meeting them. I also can't see any point in arguing about what they're asking for or trying to persuade them to relax a requirement just to suit you. If, for example, they don't want smokers or people with blue eyes or anything else and you don't match then just move on. If they can find their perfect match then good for them. If they can't then presumably they'll change their requirements, but that's up to them and trying to persuade them they won't find anyone as specified so should consider you instead is a pointless waste of time. Besides, any 'wanted' ad says a lot about them and if you don't like the ad it's a fair bet you won't like them either. Life is short, move on.
but sometimes its worth a cheeky punt i replied to a local ad november 2013 ish by a local guy who had plenty of original material and wanted to form an all female backing band so after checking out the original material and thinking to myself i could add some value with original bass lines, i sent off a cheeky reply basically saying that i liked the original material and that if he changed his mind on the all female criteria to get in touch got an email back a couple of days ago asking if i was still interested
