Clarky is on the dot there, it's the patented Optigrab. Perfect for ripping your pinky out of its joint if you have some nasty onstage rock n roll incident!

P bass PUPs. Are they in the correct configuration?
Marky L replied to Marky L's topic in Bass Guitars
Cheers. I'd like to try one of the Yamahas at some point one day. Maybe saying Leo was "wrong" wasn't quite the right word -
Just musing to meself as I fitted the QPs to my P bass, are the PUPs on a Precision actually in the correct position? OK, it probably would make little difference but the way I see it, the PUP under the E & A strings is towards the neck i.e. the warmer end and E & A are fatter sounding strings. The D & B PUP is of course closer to the bridge giving a more brighter edge on the two already toppier strings. So... should the PUPs actually have originally been placed the other way round.. E & A nearer the bridge and D & P PUP up the neck end? Would this balance the tonal output just a little bit more? M

Definitely in for a punt on this one. I know I can trust his judgement. Alas, I know the price will runaway at the end of the auction. As is, I don't think he ever used a P with The Damned (he doesn't say so here actually), so I think this is a probably a purchase in the last 20 years. Top class guy who's electric musical career has been drawn to a shuddering halt due to very bad tinnitus.

Bought a set of immaculate SD Quarter Pounders from Raggy. Top guy to deal with and the PUPs arrived next day special delivery. Cheers mate

Who's the other poor ugly bugger on guitar that never gets a mention?

There is some great wild stuff in the vaults there. I like ones with a slightly unhinged element about them.. maybe a precursor to psychobilly. Love Me : The Phantom - somethings gone wrong in that guy's head!! Surfin' Bird : Trashmen - yeah a bit cliched now but when it came out?? Wow! Larry Williams (mentioned above) has some great tunes. I forget the title but something about "Hocus pocus dynamo... makin' voodoo for you.."

Who was playing a wedding at Minster Lovell on Saturday Night?

I don't think it was me. I'm very confused though! Ah no, def not me. Embarrassing evidence available to prove I was elsewhere. (Which will not be made available!) -

I favour Hammerite as an option. Well, it's easy to spray on and gives you a good strong coating in a selection of colours and looks unique! Is it now I should "just get me coat-ing" /

Well.. maybe. Both my shoulders are gimped up after being a fool and going to a gym for a while, but I certainly get a cricked neck on my left side more and having boney shoulders I can see the bone on the top across my left shoulder is less, uhm obvious, so I wonder if I have more tissue built up over it over the years. But I think I may have more psychological effects to be honest!

Congrats mate They came through for me to in the end after I provided a proof of delivery and the ebay message from the seller to say he had received it back. Sometimes it does work out
With all this relic'ing going on, why do you never see the most common bit of damage you'd get back in the day - the cigarette burn on the headstock behind the E string? It's a really easy one to reproduce, and every fag burn is truly authentic, too. Just saying ...
Alas.. gone are the days!! Very true though.. it is a piece classic damage.. done it myself. Well it was tremendously cool to have your burning tab poked in behind the string.. wasn't it??
You getting the hint Mark A set of TIs might just be what you need on there. Chris LOL Yes, she has very good taste, but worryingly keeps suggesting I buy her an "I'm with the bass player" t-shirt for gigs. I'm starting to wonder if she's talking about a specific player or just bass players in general
I just wonder if I could be enticed to the weird world of flats.. I just don't know.. I really don't know!! And as for the t-shirt.. I'd make sure you biro your name in on the end.. just in case

Wotcha Chris!! He he!! Yep, you guessed right!! I do wonder if roundwounds are not it's friends, very weird cos as I say, when I tried it out it sounded very well balanced and it was nice to play, that and it's quite light too. I'll have a fiddle with the PUPs and see what I can do, or maybe swap them out.. I have an idea I'd like to try some Wizard Thumpers at some point so this could be the opportunity. Still very happy with it though.. well on the E and A strings anyway!! Oh and obviously Mrs Beedster is a lady of very great taste uhm.. ah... as is very ably demonstrated with her choice of you!.. Oh, uhm this is sounding worse all the time!!

Just tried the tapping trick with the end of my car keys on each pole piece and I can definitely discern a louder click/tap on the E/A PUP. Tried a few times just in case I was biasing my tap and I am convinced of the result. Pooped PUP?
-
I like the idea of swapping the halves actually. I guess all I need to do is rotate them 180 degrees and try that Didn't think of that one. Ta. Yup, PUPs if this proves the current ones are a bit wobbly.
-
Well I am convinced when played un-amplified it sounds fine across all strings and it certainly plays/feels better after the set up. He said it took him 4 or 5 goes to get the neck to the position it is now and he worked a fair bit on bridge heights and got the intonation true for my guage strings. He did state that he tidied the wiring up and re-set the PUPs to a good height. As memory serves, they are about the same.

Here's an interesting one that I'm scratching my head on and would love some input on. So, I have a Fender P with a rather fruity maple neck! It's known to a few of you on here already (it's black ). When I collected it I demoed it amped up with flats on and all was good. I replaced the flats with roundwounds (being my prefered string) and off I went. Unfortunately it had to sit in the boot of my car for most of the day which turned out to be one of the rare stupidly hot ones. When I get home I have a look and can see the neck has shifted and it plays fairly badly. My skills are limited and after messing around with it over a few weeks I decided to throw the towel in and go to a luthier I use. The main issue I had was the neck profile being basically mental and also the D string being quiter than the others and the G sounding dreadful. No sustain at all and in fact when played the notes on the G sounded very sort of choked off, particularly up the dusty end. When I showed the luthier he exclaimed "F**k me!! This is the craziest neck I have ever seen!" He reckoned it's actually an elongated S as opposed to just a single relief or bow. That and the fact that the headstock has a weird twist in it too (some of you recognise it yet?!?). Anyway I collected it last week and he had done a sterling job on the profile and action (it has to be medium high which is fine by me) with just a little bowing still present. Unfortunatley his bass amp was not working and so I just had a twiddle with it acoustically and it all rang true. When I got home and plugged in... the D was still quiet and the G though better was still choking and is definietly quiter than the E and A, both of which sound fantastic and big. So where is the problem? Does it sound like a PUP issue? The D & G part of the split is buggered? I just can't think what else. I'll go back to the luthier but would like to suggest some options to him. Cheers

I seem to remember one ep, in the 2nd series maybe, where the drummer seemed to get a bit of an arse on about electronic drums and in particular programable drum machines as if they were the begining of the end for real drummers.

Cheers Yeah, might have a snoop around a TV repair shop.. if I can find one

I think I managed to cook the cap in my 79/80's P bass whilst trying to solder it back on so need to get a replacement. Would one of the Sprague ones mentioned above do the job? I had a look on evil bay and there is a guy selling 1uf orange caps on there, but their rating is like double the Sprague ones? I'm not really looking to change the tone at all. Advice always welcome Ta

Well done on persevering and getting the result you wanted. I'm still waiting for my refund for the faulty power amp that I returned to the seller 10 days ago. His emails are very few and far between. The last being 3 days ago saying he has tested the amp, found it faulty and asked if I prefered a cheque or Paypal refund. I stated the latter! (I had already told him this in a previous email to him). I have raised a case with paypal as he is so slow on responding and I'm getting pi**ed off with the delay. I have said to him I want the refund sorted by this weekend. We'll see what happens. I think he is dragging it out and won't actually refund me.
