I've had my EDB-1 for over a year now and I'm only just realising it's potential. Here's a great review from Chris Fitzgerald Go to pages 104 / 105
p.s. It comes with flat-wound steels, but I have just got a set of black plastic Rotosounds to try.
How do you like the Roto's? Mine came with La Bella black plastic which sound a bit plastic when sliding between notes. I've just popped some Thomastik flats on, I'll try them tomorrow when they've settled in. Mine is the B10, a.f.a.i.k. the only difference is the pre-amp, yours has a tube? Mine has a feedback cancelling button, not had to use it yet!

I did try a set of Honeys a while ago, I can't remember much about them, apart from the stiffness. I had a Kolstein Travel Bass for a while, which came with Kolstein Heritage strings. It sounded amazing, but as always I thought I could improve sound / playability. It's a 39" stop so I thought a 1/2 scale Honey D would be worth a shot. Well it was too thick, stiff and toneless, so I contacted Tony who replied saying he was working on a new formula and would send me a sample. After a few months I reminded Tony about this and he said he'd lost my details and would sort something out. I've never heard from him since, which is a bit disappointing, I know others who have had great customer service from him. I've since sold the Kolstein, which sounded even better with a new set of Kolstein Heritage. I might still have an old set of Heritage if Tony would like to check them out. I've got Flexocor on my Eminence r/n and plugged in it sounds like my Hungarian acoustic. Anyway I'm all for supporting local and national business. I'd like to find a string for jazz & orch. to replace the Flexocor and the Heritage, that can be bowed and pizzed, for under £100 without being too thick! I'm also liking Bel Canto so anything close to the three I've mentioned would be welcome. Best Keith

Out of Action For A Few Days Due To Injured Hand
Cheers for the recommendation Jon! It's the first time in over two months that I've had any free time, so I could have covered some of the gigs if needed...I'm also regularly meeting reading bass players (both upright and bass guitar) who I could put forwards if I wasn't available, as I generally play at least a couple of big band gigs every week on guitar - tough reads too, so you know the musicians you meet are more than capable. Good luck for a speedy recovery Keith.
Thanks Johnny, I thought you'd be busy, you usually are. And big thanks to John Marley (Leeds) and Paul Baxter (York) for covering my gigs. I went along to the 3 gigs that John covered and really enjoyed his playing. He played his 75 Jazz on the first two and his Thomas Martin upright through a Bose L1 Compact last night at Harrogate Jazz Club. It's been a painful, frustrating and costly week but I've just had half an hour playing my ex Clarky Eminence upright and ex Clarky p/j fretless through my Bose L1 Compact and I'm beginning to feel better! Hope to be gigging again by next Sunday at City Vaults in Bradford with Karen Carpenter tribute vocalist Laurie Briggs (will be jazz gig, not Carpenters) and my band the Watermelon Men. Thanks again guys for all your well wishes. Keith -
Hello, I've recently bought the Realist pickup for bass. I've tried it at home with my amp, and it works perfectly, though, every gig that I tried playing with it, and connect it to the sound system exsisted in the venue, it gave small , and sometime fading signal, cracking and distorted sound - completly unreliable. Did I buy a bad one, or is there something I dont know that needs to be done?
Is your bridge sitting comfortably? If it is not the pick up could sound weak and distorted. Taken from the Eminence bass site "If you find yourself with no output from the pickup, most likely the top of the bridge is tipping forward and the feet are not flat on the bass belly. In that case, push the TOP of the bridge back towards the tailplate so that the feet sit squarely on the bass belly."
You could try Christian Topman in York he plays both DB and BG and reads, but I don't know what his schedule is. He may not be able to do Friday, don't know about the others. He's on Facebook or I could pass on his number if you want it.
I don't know Christian Topman, it would be useful to have his number please.
I'm out at the weekend, but I could probably do the Sunday and Tuesday gigs. Message me if you want and we can talk.
Thanks Doddy but I've got them covered now, but will add you to my list if you like. -
I can't help out Keith, unfortunately, but just wanted to wish your hand a speedy recovery. Sorry about the iPad too - will insurance cover it? All the best, Clarky
Thanks for the wishes Clarky, I know injured your hand a while back, frustrating innit! My fingers have swollen and I can't bend them. Will look into the insurance, think I'm covered.
Not a good day for you then. Wish you and the hound well mate.
Thanks Gary
Hope you make a fast recovery, Keith. Did you lecture your dogs on the matter of the hand that feeds them?
Thanks Roger, I've learned my lesson, to stay away from a dog having a fit.
Why not pm 'Jonny-lad' as he's a proper musician and I assume he can read! ...and I've got a basic Aria PJ fretless you could borrow if that'd help you get through a gig.
Cheers Jon, I'll bear Jonny in mind, he's not too far away, and thanks for the offer of a loan bass. I could have used the bass in Garageband on the iPad if it wasn't busted
smile.gif Give him a pat from me.
Will do Geoff, thanks
the damage is bad enough that he can't play any bass in the next week ... sad.gif
Looks like I'll be missing at least five gigs -
Ouch!! just back from 3 1/2 hours in A & E after my dog bit my left hand. It was my fault, he was having a fit and then went a bit mental and as I tried to restrain him, and my left hand was in the wrong place. Anyway I ended up in an ambulance and arrived at A & E at 6.50pm, waited 3 1/2 hours to be seen. Strangely there was no pain leading up to the examination but now it's agony! So, my busiest gig week so far this year will have to be depped out. I've got tomorrow covered already, but I might need a reading bass guitarist for Fri & Sat in North Yorks, and d/b or b/g for Sunday in Bradford and Tuesday in Harrogate. It's a double whammy financially this week cos last night I'd borrowed my wife's iPad to video our gig and it was dropped onto quarry tiles, yes the glass broke Me and my dog are still friends

Looks like a copy of the Yamaha Stagepas 300 which I can recommend. We used one on pub gigs for a few years until I splashed out on Bose. Downside is the pole mounts are an extra and have to be attached with screws. Sorry but I've not had any experience with the Samson.
Lovely old german bass from around 1875. Just had loads of work done including new bass bar, endpin, tailpiece, bridge, re-shooting fingerboard, crack repairs etc. All work guaranteed. I'm after £4750 which I think is a very good price. The luthier thinks I've under-priced it but I need it sold. Can't attach photos yet because I only have Internet on my phone at the moment. Will hopefully upload them in a few days or I can email them if anyone's interested.
Pics and location a must. Are you in Filey?
My turn now... anyone selling a fixed-neck 4-string Eminence? Unlikely I know...
Not selling, but I've got Clarky's removeable neck Eminence, both Yamaha SLB100 & 200 + acoustic double basse if you fancy a couple of hours hands on in Harrogate. -
Is the B10 the one with the spike?
That's the one

I've only used my recently acquired Takamine B10 once live so far and didn't have any problems with feedback. There is a "Feedback Absorber" or a "tunable feedback attenuation circuit" built into the onboard AD Series Preamp but I've not had to use it yet.

I've been using Beyer TGx58 and the cheaper Tgx48 (without switch) for my guest singers and musicians, and 9 out of 10 cats prefer them to the Sure. Much nicer sound, less feed back, feel nice to touch check out the TGX48 if you don't need the switch. I paid about £40 each for them
fiddly to fit and keep in position for a constant tone. Taking the bass in out of it's gig bag, the thing would get knocked and need 5 mins to get it back where you want it. Also, the gap that it fits into needs to be snug. Wood moves with temperature and it would affect the way the pickup was held in the wing slot e.g it would get really tight when hot, and a little too loose when cold. They really do sound great, not too boomy like a Basmax, and almost airy like a mic. It did usable levels without feedback. Worth a try to see if it works on your bass.
+1 Can sound amazing if you've got the patience to fiddle! Doesn't work well on Yamaha SLB's
