1. After years of owning estate cars I went for a Diesel Citroen Berlingo Multispace. It's the most versatile economical vehicle I have ever tried having loads of space and seating options. We put our 2 large dogs in a travel crate in the boot. I can put a double bass upright in the back without having to drop the seats. At the recent double bass bash I took 3 acoustic uprights, 2 eub's, 2 combos plus stands with room to spare.
2.
I am struggling to carry my bass at my advanced age, and am considering a more portable instrument. I'm interested in members thoughts on these. Seems there are two types: hollow bodied (allegro, eminence etc) and sticks: (NS Designs, Aria etc). Do the hollow instruments sound more authentic? I would just as well play my Fender bass than an electric double bass that sounds like a bass guitar. Are there any 'stand out' models. I don't want to spend more than £2,000 but would prefer less. It seems that advice from retailers depends on which models they stock. I'm not sure if I should by a cheaper one for rehearsals and lug the 3/4 to gigs, or go the whole distance and get a decent one and use it on stage. As acoustic basses are hard to amplify, it seems to me that a dedicated, quality electric bass could be superior. Advice from members would be very useful to me.
Kedo, I'd love to share my experiences with you but I'd be typing forever. I you'd like to chat on the phone it might save some wear & tear on my old fingers.
3. I've had three great sounding 1/2 size basses but found the necks too skinny and being used to 41 1/2 " found I'd be playing sharp on 39" for at least couple of numbers.
4.
EUB's occupy a nice little niche between an electric bass guitar and a double bass, but don't sound anything like a double bass. An electric fretless with tapewounds will do just as well as an EUB to simulate a DB. However, an EUB looks cool and gets good feedback from an audience. There is no real benefit spending loads of money on one as they all sound pretty similar, and experimenting with strings can produce more effective results to move closer to a proper upright sound. Just go for the one you like the look of most.
I'm sorry but after owning and experimenting with at least 10 different EUB's and as many fretless basses, I have to disagree with all comments except the one about strings.
5.
someone else here on BC has one signed off in August 1994 which looks like the first production model..
That'll be me
6. Probably the best double bass amp out there! The effects return can be used as a second input so you blend mic & pickup, or even plug in the keyboard player on a duo gig as I have with mine.
7. Transparent white with a black undercoat, what's wrong with that?

12. That's about 35 minutes away if ya want me to have a look at it I've gigs on Thursday & Friday nights but the weekend is free There's also an instrument repairer in Harrogate who did Artisan's sound post a few weeks ago, I've forgotten his name
13. You need to get one of each and find out which works best for you (like many of us here have) For starters the Bassmax is the most tolerant fit of the wing slot types, doesn't need a pre amp, and in my experience has the most feedback resistance. And it doesn't cost the earth so I'd recommend that you try one before spending a fortune on others. I'm using a Bassmax on 2 of my uprights whilst at least a nearly new Realist, 2 x Full Circle, Upton Rev solo11, Underwood and Shadow are all in the spares box. The Bassmax doesn't suit EUB's with solid bodies unless you fit one either side of the bridge. That's where Underwood & Shadow SH950 come in useful. Have fun
14. I've too many fretless basses so I'm gonna list a couple to make way for another This was defretted by my local luthier, It's lined with dots in-between the fret lines. It has a couple of dings but it's a working bass not a piece of wall art. Big, fat sound from the split pick up, what you would expect from the bridge. Would prefer collection from Harrogate or meet up in Yorkshire.
15. Tonight at the Harrogate Brasserie 26 - 30 Cheltenham Parade 8.15pm Free entry Jon Taylor sax/flute & Rich Jevons guitar with the Andy Cholerton Trio http://harrogatejazzblues.blogspot.co.uk/p/whos-on.html
16.
Bump for one of BC's true gents and a stunning bass (sadly I don't do fivers)
I could take one of the strings off for you Clarky
17. Anyone fancy sitting in tonight at the Red Lion, I'll have an upright and bass guitar on hand. Or just want come for a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord, listen to some sounds and say hello. Live music will only survive with an audience!
18. In my experience with Markbass amps a K&K Bassmax works well into the normal jack input without the need for a pre amp. If you're switching between b.g. & upright then something like a Plat Pro could be plugged into the XLR or the effects return. Have fun
19. Ive owned this amazing instrument for a quarter of a century but hardly played it in the lat 20 years, time for someone else to enjoy it. American Walnut, original blue/grey case Can send more pics by email if required. Bass is in North Yorkshire, I'd prefer not to ship at this stage.
