1. Hey guys, I'm hoping to shift my Sansamp Bass Driver DI to fund a nice simple DI box. It's the original model, a little over 10 years old, but in good nic, with the original box and instructions. This ain't my one, but gives an idea of how it compares to the newer model with more switches. I'll get a pic of my own one sorted for the sale thread. Anyone got any idea of the value before I punt it up for sale?... Thanks in advance for your help you lot Eude
  2.
ah...had a feeling you were going to get an ACG......Nice, looks like a really well thought out sensible spec
Thanks dude It's been a long on going spec and build, wanted to get the best setup for what I do everyday, without too much messing about The Bloodwood fingerboard is a bit of an extravagance, was originally going to be Rosewood, but it just spoke to me on one of my many visits to to annoy Alan, so I just had to go with it. It was that or some crazy figured Mango, that might make an appearance at a later date though... Cheers, Eude
  3. Congrats mate - that looks amazing! You must be over the moon with your bass What's all the controls? Looks right different from my Shuker Preamp... Eude
  4.
If for any reason I can't get a guarantee claim on my Monster lead then I fully intend on doing business with our own OBBM for a replacement quality lead.
+1 Can't recommend Dave's stuff enough Eude
  5.
Sounds fascinating, and I'd love to see what results you get. The problem I foresee is that - if you do discover a difference - knowing whether it's audible or not.
I guess a lot of it will be inaudible, if there is a difference. Should be able to work out what is and isn't though via the powers of google and/or wikipedia. Will keep you posted... On a side note, I can't fault the build quality of Monster Cables, that is worth a little extra cash at least. Eude
  6.
I just tried a quick A/B test on two cables I have. One is 20ft; the other is 4ft. The plugs and cable are identical. The resistance of the longer one is therefore *five times* that of the shorter one. I listened specifically for differences in volume. There may have been one but I couldn't hear it. The input LEDs on my preamp lit up to exactly the same level, too. Mmmmm.
Think the only true way to test the theory would be to use a Spectrum Analysier and get some screen shots for comparison, think there's one in Logic. I might be doing some recording tonight, so if there's time, I'll see if there is a difference. My new ACG has Neutrik locking jack, not head anything about Monster cables damaging them, so I'll give it a go this once. Cheers, Eude
  7. I'd love to just have one of these and nowt else! I've been running my LittleMark flat for a wee while now, so a nice light and loud power amp like this would be perfect! Bet it'll be a pricey number though... Eude
  8. I've had a separate issue with Monster Cables, with them being so oversized, the plugs can damage switchcraft style jacks, had to replace the jack on my Shuker twice before I worked it out, and through the time I had my Warwick, I had to replace the jack a fair few times n'all... Wee thread here >> http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=405828 Thought it might be of interest. (I now only use Bassic Cables by OBBM )
I will use my old faithfull.I was given a whirlwind lead about ten years ago and its still going strong.will keep you guys posted.t
I've had a Whirlwind cable for 17 years, still going strong! Eude
  9. Hey Mr. Wavey, welcome to the forum! I've been following your build on TalkBass. That's gonna be a one hell of a bass! What's the ETA? Eude
  10.
I love it. Congratulations Eude.
Thanks man Eude
  11.
Sweeeet. I love the trans black style finish. Really simple but elegant and classy at the same time. Simplicity with elegance is clearly the way to go with custom basses at the moment.
I hear ya man! Simple elegance, I like that Eude
  12.
Umm... anytime now? Basically, they're just finishing everything up. As I mentioned, they are restringing with slightly higher gauge strings because they feel this will contribute to and enhance the overall sound of the bass (which I was contemplating doing for tonal reasons anyway, seeing as I won't ever be bending on this bass). Once they've made sure everything is as it should be, the bass will be shipped! This should be by Jan 10 (give or take). I'm pleased it's happening in January rather than over the Christmas peak - makes it less likely that the bass will be sat in a cold shipping port for a long period of time.
Awesome news mate Did you see what I picked up on Monday?... Eude
  13.
If you described that bass by words only, I'd probably have puked, but the strange thing is, it is really, really beautiful and I feel quite emotional.
He he. Yeah, I guess it sounds weird on paper, bloomin' works though Glad you like it mate. Eude
  14.
Thanks for the answer, and yes, it did. Is the ACG a passive pickup with active EQ, or both active pickup and EQ? Can you bypass the EQ to make it an entirely passive instrument?
No probs mate. As far as I'm aware, the ACG has a passive pickup and active EQ. You can't bypass the EQ, but there's a low battery indicator, so that meets the only issue I've ever had with active instruments anyway, in my opinion they sound better off the bat, I like a lot of headroom and are obviously a lot more flexible, I fully accept it's horses for courses on that one though Eude
  15.
Incedible looking bass mate, i'm really chuffed for you. The dirty swamp ash finish is really different and it works really well with the bloodwood
Thanks mate It worked out really well, the bloodwood is just incredible in the flesh too. The only downside to all of this is, you'd assume you'd be cured of GAS at least for a wee while, but I've got a list of future customs just waiting!... Eude
  16.
Wow - that's stunning! The finish on that ash is amazing - you must be very pleased!
Oh, I am
  17.
Gorgeous. I love the idea of pairing the single overwound pickup with the tonal variety of the ACG pre-amp. Dare I ask how it compares to your Shuker?
It's a pretty powerful combination! No bother at all asking about how it compares to the Shuker. My Shuker and how I use it day to day was actually the starting point for this bass. I love the sound and playability of the bass, but I find I'm really only using the lower 5 strings for all my gigging and practicing needs at the moment and for the foreseeable, bar noodling at home, so it had to be a 5 string. I only ever use the front pickup on the Shuker, which is one of those seriously hot EMG DC pickups, which is why I went with the pickup overwound spec, also, I tend to leave the EQ flat on it and boost the low mids on the amp, so I'll be able to use the ACG pre to do that and rely on my amp solely for amplification from now on. The white ash body of the Shuker gets "my sound", but can be a little heavy, at times, hence the Swamp Ash. I really miss the Wenge neck from my ol' Warwick, which I associate with a little bit of growl, so I specced that too. I opted for a simple, no obviously fancy wood option here too, as this is meant to be a working instrument. So I guess the short answer is it's similar, but different, at least soundwise. Both basses can make very different noises which either bass can't mimic, however there's a clear middle ground which is "my sound". The Shuker can be a bit more delicate, and with the bridge pickup can get a bit more Jaco-esque, where the ACG can be a lot more aggressive, and enormous sounding, I'm still exploring of course though... That answer your question dude? Eude
  18.
Don'cha just love it when a plan comes together!? The bass looks fantastic and I wish you both a long and happy life together.

Looks awesome!
Thanks guys I'm one happy bunny! Stayed up late last night just playing without the amp, I'm going to have to get some kind of headphone amp... Eude
  19.
Another stunning selection of gorgeous woods and top class craftsmanship. Very very nice indeed. Be really interested to try out a no-radius fretboard - my mind tells me it can't be as comfortable over a 5-string's width
It's actually more comfortable than you would think on a wider fingerboard, as the furthest your fretting hand will have to stretch vertically is to your lowest string. On a flat board, your lowest string is actually closer than it would be on a radisued board. Radiused fingerboards actually came about to make playing bar chords easier and everyone is just used to the feel now. Of course it's all down to personal taste, but I reckon everyone should have a go before passing judgment, as I wasn't convinced at first till I actually got my hands on one, but that single experience is why I ordered it on the Finn Cheers, Eude
  20.
Congratulations Eude! Definitely a keeper this one...
Definitely a keeper!
Beautiful. Were you ever tempted by the hollowbody ACG Alan brought to the Moffat bash? It seemed to have found a home in your arms.
I loved that bass mate, but I'd already put my cash bass cash down for this sexy little number, plus as fun as it was, I don't really have any need for a fretless at the moment. If I had the spare cash though, it'd be mine already!... Cheers, Eude
  21. Well, after a bit of a wait, I drove down to Moffat through the snow and collected my first ACG bass today. Here's the specs >> 5 string Bolt-on Finn Single Cut Swamp Ash Body with Grain Enhancement and "Dirty Ash" Satin Finish 33" Scale with bridge kept as far back as possible to kept 1st position very comfortable 3 piece Wenge Neck, Satin Finish - looks like chocolate Fretted Bloodwood Fingerboard, No Radius - you gotta try it, you won't go back to radiused fingerboards... Wenge Headstock Cap front and rear Single Very Overwound RFB Pickup just back from the mid point between the 24th fret and the bridge, just ahead of MM position EQ02 9V with passive tone control, coil tap switch and low battery indicator Black Hardware 18 mm String Spacing Through Body Stringing on the B string Asymmetrical Neck Profile This bass has been in the pipeline for a wee while, you can't rush perfection, so Alan just built this in his own time. I wanted to keep quiet about it though, my own little secret The bass is perfect, just as I requested. I love the single cut Finn shape, so had to go for that. I really like the snap and aggression of Bolt-On basses too, I know Bolt-On Single Cuts are a bit marmite, but upper fret access is great regardless. It's compact and really really light, thanks to the swamp ash body and the hipshot kit, so it balances perfectly sitting or standing. The asymmetrical neck is ridiculously comfy, as is the flat fingerboard, seriously, you all need to try this out, you won't go back to a radiused board, this thing nearly plays itself. The sound of this bass is something else. I wanted something with real guts, hence the overwound pickup, but I really didn't expect this! In Series mode this thing is enormous, loads of low end and low mids, seriously loud. Switch it into Parallel mode and the mids sweeten up a bit, and into Single Coil and there's a really delicate articulate tone hidden in there. Team that up with the ACG Pre + a Tone Control and you've got a very very versatile instrument, and that's with only one pickup! As with all the reports of ACG basses, the custom built experience was great. Communication with Alan is second to none, and being involved form start to finish was brilliant, being only and hour's drive from ACG HQ, on a snow free day, certainly has it's advantages. All in, I couldn't be happier. Here's some pics from the whole process from wood to super sexy bass... Wood >> Wood and Finn SC Body Template >> Body and Neck (from the rear) >> Unfinished Ash Body >> Dirty Ash Finish (mid-application, kinda looks Barbecued...) >> The finished article >> (Thanks to Alan for the finished pics too, I'll try and get some more done when daylight returns to Scotland, probably in a few months...) I'll do a proper review in a few weeks hopefully with some sound bytes too. Right, I'm off to annoy the neighbours for a while... Cheers, Eude
  22.
And its currently in its case gathering dust for the next 4 months The Jaffa is looking freeking sweet btw. I adore maple necks.
Shame dude, that you away for your season then? I think I'll be off to Canada for a wee bit boarding this year. Have fun mate! Eude

    obbm's feedback

Got a great Speakon to Speakon cable from Dave via my wee sis for my Christmas. As usual, a great cable and a continued excellent service from Dave. Thanks again mate Eude
  24.
Just used it for a new years eve gig rehearsal. Totally different to the last time I used it (heavy rock trio). This one is a jazz / swing type affair. Backed the gain off for a cleaner sound - still plenty of volume but still a bit of grit when I dug in. Eude - you would be smitten as it was still fat and slightly argumentative! (You really need to have a night out in Newcastle mate). Not a problem (actually really nice) but based on my initial forays, totally clean isn't this amp's forte. I'm concerned about the related thread on the DI being too hot though - can anyone shed any more light on this?
Hey man, thanks so much for this. Once I've got my stuff in order his year, I'll be selling my LittleMark, I've got serious GAS for the Terror Bass, or should that be AAS?... Anyone out there in need of a LittleMark250?... Cheers, Eude
  25.
That setup just oozes cool. Orange amps and Aguilar cabs work really well, hence why I went for some as well as the Orange ones.
That's me sold! My LittleMark will be up for sale in the New Year
Used it at a rehearsal for the first time last night. Impressed. Quite fat and growly - not unlike the person playing it, so we should get on well.
That sounds awesome mate, "fat and growly", just how I like my woman... Eude
