Cheers Stevie I've ordered a mibass 550 and an ashdown LB212 cab both get really good reviews and recommendations on the forums ill let you know how I get on with them both thanks everyone Bri
Nice one mate! Really looking forward to hearing how you get one with it! Where'd you find the LB212 Cab? They're quite hard to get hold of these days, plenty of VS212s kicking about, but they're a bit heavier.
Two Vs-112s is a great little setup, I am a big fan of paired 1x12s as they are so versatile. The only concern I have with the VS/LB112 is that the power handling is pretty low, so I wouldn't want to put a Spyder/ABM/MiBass 550 through a pair.
I'm sure it would be fine if you're careful with the volume control and keep you ears open for any signs of distress. Perhaps the Spyder 330 would be a better match for the VS-122 cabs then... Eude
I have a LB212 a really great cab, It sounds fantastic, light and beautifully made (in uk) it has great lows and good mids / highs even though its got no tweater. It is also very sensitive so its loud, great dispersion. It also is very clean, it handles rated power nicely. The VS series, I was told are identical except the vs is chinese made (still fantastic build quality) and has custom made ceramic drivers rather than the uk made neos, bit heavier but still a great cab, 112 are also great cabs. There are quite a quite a few lb112 still around, you can pick them up at the same price as a vs equivalent which is a steal, considering the price of the drivers in them. In hindsight I would have gone for two VS/ LB112, as it gives me more options for rehearsals etc. But I am happy with the LB212 its seriously all you ever need for most gigs, it has a great on stage dispersion, and sounds fantastic from any angle, happy bunny here. I am using my Di'ed LB30 and 212 for most stuff I am doing, ( we are all miced / di ed even the drummer, I cant be arsed with stupid on stage vol) . But I have got some big shows lined up in the summer, so have got a CTM300 and CL610 on order, cant wait. LB30 CTM300 are seriously ground breaking amps (these are the work of Dave Green, the ex Matamp designer) the VS LB and CL cabs are also fantastic, they need to be to keep up with these amps. I also like the MIbass def, the best lightweight amp around at the moment, esp if you use it with an optical valve squasher like a EHX Blackfinger, blows all other lighweight stuff into the weeds.
Wow, thanks for the input dude, and you Walbassist. I've had a dig around online and found a few LB-212 cabs still on the go, and the LB-112 ones too, however the VS-112 cabs are £123 over on Thomann! At that price I could get a 2 x VS 1x12 setup with a 500W ABM head, a 550 Spyder or the MiBass 550 for a little over £600, or maybe even just got for the 330 Spyder and spend the rest on liquor and black jack! I am tempted to hang fire till the MiBass cabs come out though, especially if I end up going for the MiBass head. I had an email conversation with Lee for Ashdown who said the cabs will be very keenly priced. Dan, what's the flat tone like from the MiBass head, my previous tonal nirvana was a MarkBass LittleMark 250 head run flat, for reference. So now I'm thinking, either a more classic sounding rig with VS 1x12 Cabs and probably a Dual Tube Series Head, or... a more modern sounding rig, with MiBass 1x12 Cabs and the MiBass 550 Head. Shame I can't afford both. Watch this space... Eude
I'd imagine there's little difference between the LB112 and the VS112. I'd say go for it!
I know they're heavier, I guess as they've got ceramic drivers instead of the LB neo jobbies. Reckon they'll fairly versatile? I like a fairly clean full, lots of low mids, and a little bit modern sound. I know most of that will come from the head, but do you think the cabs will be able to deliver that kind of tone? Eude

Hey guys, sorry to revive an "oldish" thread, but was wondering if any of you can help? Have any of you tried the newer Ashdown 1x12 cabs, the VS-112's? Particularly running a pair of them? I'm looking to get a 2 x 1x12 rig later this year and these little cabs have got my attention, for two reasons, I'm quite keen to buy an Ashdown setup if I can find what works for me, will probably end up with a MiBass head, but the price on these lil' pups is almost too good to be true... Cheers, Eude
If they was made in the UK, then I could understand (to an extent, as we usually make crap). But it's probably made in China, therefore you're not really buying British! Markbass is Italian & made in Italy. If you can get an LM & a Barefaced cab, I can't see you needing anything else amp/cab wise for some time.
Well, they're a British company, which is something at least. LM, yup, cool, Barefaced, I'm afraid I'm not sure about. I didn't like the Compact I tried a wee while back, plus they're designed to sound great in a live, loud, band context, as far as I'm aware, but that comes with the sacrifice of good tone at lower volumes, I really want a versatile solution. If money was no object, I'd have a MarkBass LittleMark and an EAD Foundation 212 in a heartbeat! Eude
It depends what you call "flat". I'd bet a large sum of money that all these amps would sound identical if you were to set them to a flat response. The MiBass is pretty flat, I'd say. It could have a slightly rolled off top end, but without measuring I couldn't swear to it. Doesn't the MarkBass have some built-in contour? The tone controls of the MiBass are really versatile. They're parametric with infinitely variable frequencies - similar to the Rebelhead 450. I'd be surprised if you couldn't dial in the MarkBass tone. I've compared the MiBass flat sound to the TC Electronics Classic 450 and prefer the former.
I'm just keen to get back what I had before, later this year, but with a bit more power. Running the LittleMark 250 flat into an Aggie GS112 got me exactly the tone I had in my head I know the simple thing would be to just buy a LittleMark III and 2 Aggie GS112s, but like I said, it would be nice to "buy british" and save a bob or two, as I want to buy new - by the way the Aggie prices are going, you'll probably be able to get 2 of their Mi12 cabs for the price of one GS112 when they come out...
I think the LIttleMark 250 is probably the equivalent of the MiBass 220. The power amp / power supply on many of these amps is identical. Don't quote me, but the Markbass and Gallien Krueger 450/500 watt mini-amps (and the Genz Benz equivalent and more that I can't think of at the moment) all use the same B&O power amp and power supply. The only difference is in the preamps and cases. I can confirm from experience that the MiBass preamp is faultless, if you ignore the stupid Deep switch. It also has a very good tone control section, but no buit-in bells and whistles or valves.
Don't 'spose you can compare the flat tone of the MiBass and the LM can you? I love the core tone of the LM, but would like to be able to "Buy British", plus the Ashdown stuff represents great value for money... Thanks, Eude
Bugger! thats me more confused than ever. No seriously thanks for the advice of your experiences. im about to shell out a lot of dough on this and want to be happy with it. Just seems a good price on the mibass inc 3 yr warranty as opposed to SH although ive heard the markbass stuff is pretty reliable. would you suggest a 2x12 a 4x10 seen a couple in my price range. would have likes the LM3 and Barefaced compact that was up the other day but the cab got snaffled super quick
Personally, I think a 2 x 1x12 set up would provide you a lot more flexibility, and a nice thick and punchy tone. A 4x10, would offer that too, but you wouldn't have the option of taking half of it with you if you had a quiet gig or rehearsal. You could also check out a 2 x 2x10 setup too if anything comes along, again, that would give you a flexible modular setup too. As far as the head goes, it's down to what sounds best to you I'm afraid. I certainly think the LittleMark heads sound brilliant, but we might be after very different sounds. I've not heard anything bad about the MiBass heads though, and Thomann have a very good returns policy apparently. Eude
seriously thinking of a mibass 550 (£360 deivered from thomann delivered and with 3yr warranty -about the same price or cheaper as peope are after for SH markbass) with either a 2x10 2x12 or 4x10 possibly the GK mbe 4X10 as a ligtish weight rig that can do the business and come in at budget anyone used Mibass and markbass and can give an honest opinion?
I used to have a MarkBass LittleMark 250 with an Aguilar GS112. For me, it was the perfect tone, I used to run it completely flat and it sounded awesome, to me anyway! I know the power was a bit limited, but for what I needed it for it was perfect, the GS112 cabs put out an incredible amount of low end. I moved to my little Promethean combo due to a change of circumstances/space, but I miss the low end of that set up. Personally, if I was you, I'd aim for a micro head and 2 1x12s if you can get a good deal on it. You could then use one cab for rehearsal and quiet practice and whip out both to get the full 4 Ohm welly out of the head. I can vouch for the MarkBass kit, it's all amazing, every single bit of it, however I've yet to try the MiBass heads, but I am very interested in them. Probably not much help, but it's my 2p anyway Eude

I believe a sharper break angle over the bridge saddle and nut might help? Stringing through the body, if it's possible with your bridge, could help at that end and an angled headstock (probably not a viable option) or a string retainer to pull everything towards the headstock might help at the other end. Making sure your nut is cut probably could help too... Also, you could maybe just try tighter strings of a the same gauge. I've used DR strings for a long time, the hex-core ones (lo-riders) are higher tension than the round-core hi-beams and sunbeams. You could also maybe see if the nice folks at Newtone can wind you a custom set of strings with higher tension... Eude
Why do you hope it was a BCer? Not trying to pick an argument, it just struck me as a strange thing to say.
Just keepin' it in the faaaamily... (innit)
wish i could answer that as i had a guitard belting out black night in one ear and a bassist trying out and buying an abm head in the other!i dont think theres much difference in the mibass head to an abm head to be honest.i did prefer it with the bass boost on and the sliders do make a big difference unlike the rotary controls.i did crank it up and the sound kept clean.much better than ashdowns Lg heads.why is it though you cant crank up the input more than 9 o'clock on most ashdowns before it starts clipping?
Thanks anyway dude. I'm keen to know how these little MiBass's compare to MarkBass LittleMark's. Hopefully I can get round to trying one myself soon. Cheers, Eude

Fantastic news "ead" You won't be disappointed. Can't wait to see this develop! Eude
i tried the mibass head in pmt the other day.the 220 would not imo be loud enough for most gigs but the 550 definately had enough power.i tried it through an abm 1x15 cab and it sounded ok.so a mibass combo might be the answer whenever they are available as long as they are not overpriced!
From what I've heard they're going to be very competitively priced. The only problem I can see is that, at least from the prototypes they've shown so far, the only one that has the 550 head is the 1x15 combo, wish they had popped that in the 1x12 too... What was the flat tone of the MiBass like by the way? Was it clean and transparent, or fat?... Eude
According to the specs on their respective web sites the Mono case is lighter (although deeper in size).
Fair enough, I was just mighty impressed with them when I saw them, but if I had my leather bag in one hand and anything else in the other it would seem light... Very nicely made too though, and with it being slimmer, it might be better for on and off the bus etc...
-
I've never understood the attraction of leather gig bags. Modern synthetic materials are just as durable and a fraction of the weight. For me the whole point of a gig bag is to get the best weight to protection ratio as possible.
Fair enough, I just think it looks great, and it does provide fantastic hard wearing protection, but I hear ya about the weight, if I was lugging around really heavy basses, or was a big wimp, I guess it might be an issue
-
Seriously check out the Fusion Bags. They're semi-rigid and very lightweight, Sugden and Dave Perry both have them. I've got a custom leather Pro-bag ( http://www.probag-net.com/ ) which I'm very happy with, it's not the lightest, bit it fits VERY snugly and provide great protection without being enormously thick. No bother at all getting it on/off buses, trains etc... Eude
There's nothing wrong with the MBEs, you want to take what people on TB say with a pinch of salt, they seem a bit more vulnerable to spouting hearsay, rumour and opinions as fact than most. The MBEs are made to a cheaper price point than the NEOs, that's no surprise. There also has been a few dodgy ones slip through but they're the extreme minority, I wouldn't worry about buying an eastern one if you fancy it. Lots of people swear that cabs without bracing are useless then don't listen to the actual cabs. Try looking them up on here and finding the opinions of people that actually use the MBEs and not just people that have had 2nd/3rd hand information. It might be worth giving Polar Audio a buzz and seeing if you can nip over and try them out. A couple of hours each way on the road isn't a huge price to pay when you're spending hundreds on cabs.
+1 I'm pretty sure any of the duff MBE cabs are few and far between. Defo worth giving them a shot. I'm looking to invest in something a bit bigger later in the year, in a 1 or 2 x 12 setup and the MBE212 is definitely on my list... Eude
-
The production of the MBE cabs was in the far east somewhere initially, and there have been some QC issues, but GK have moved production back to the US so in the next couple of months US made MBE cabs will start appearing, probably for a slightly higher price, but might be worth waiting?... Eude
Promethean is a great amp but the 1x10 combo doesn't compare to your Klystron 1x15 in terms of proper bass frequency output
I would agree, it's an incredible piece of kit considering the size and price, but it lacks the natural low end you get from a good 12" or a 15" speaker. With the 1x10" extension cab, I reckon it would meet your needs Eude

Yup, it's a bit sloppy, but at the end of the day, like Mr Phook says, he's probably had to puke the same stuff out over and over again to journos of all nationalities too. The Guy Pratt demos on the Ashdown Youtube Channel are pretty good though, fingers crossed they can get him on the case soon Eude
