Arrived today, looks pretty cool in the flesh, although I might change the grill to cloth if I keep it. Only plugged in for a quick test as I'm off out but first impressions are great. Nice and clear, punchy bass. I cranked the volume and didn't get any nasty noises at all. I underestimated just how light it is as well! I'll give it a real test tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
How you getting on with the cab mate? I love 2x12 cabs and want to get one in the near future to run with my Promethean head and this little GK just seems too good to be true!... Eude
Or, dare I say it, a high-quality bitza or parts build. Which assumes you know how to get to the sound you want.
You could get some really nice Warmoth bits and have someone like, DoctorBass build and finish it for you?...

My money would be on an ACG J Type, lovely modern, original take on the classic Jazz in my opinion >> http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2012/03/11/ac-guitars-introduces-j-type-models/ If you really want a properly trad jazz though, Jon Shuker makes some lovely more traditional ones. Eude
iPod's an interesting example though because its design aesthetic contributes to clear functional limitations but people like the aesthetic enough to work within them even to the point that they don't really notice the limitations. Sounds rather familiar to the world of bass cabs...
Good point mate, although in my opinion, the real functional limitations of the iPod stem from iTunes more than anything else, awful awful awful bit of software Eude
Thanks Eude! I knew someone would understand where I am coming from eventually. I have no dopubt Apple borrowed heavily from a fair few previous ideas haha! The other thing I like about Aguilar is the minimalism. Small classic fonts, nothing 'in your face', just classic yet modern approaches. I even think their pedals look fantastic, and its a pedal!!!
I think MarkBass have done a great job too. I never liked the Yellow to start off with, but it's grown on me, and it's immediately familiar because of it, more clever design... TC Electronics have also come up with a good look for their kit, unique and utilitarian, and their aggressive marketing has brought their kit on leaps and bounds in a very short space of time. Folks could learn a lot from these guys. Eude

I've not really been one to mess with settings on an amp, I tend to do it all on the bass, and if anything add a touch of bass and mid if necessary, so if the amp sounds good as it is, that's all you need! I'm glad to hear that you're managing to use it for something other than metal/rock/punk, which seems to be the amps natural tone, at least with the stock valves anyway. Cheers, Eude

I should add, I really like the look of the Baer stuff too, and I haven't read a bad review yet! Classic, simple and robust, with nice branding - good work fella Eude
Off the musical topic, look at the iPod and how it influenced companies like Nintendo to make a minimalist white console (Wii). The Wii has been a massive massive hit. Part of it is the modern marketing and the fact it isn't an ugly massive box.
A total aside here, but everyone seems to be blind to what influenced the iPod, and many other "unique" Apple products, and it bugs me a lot, having studied product design for my undergraduate degree. If you flick through Braun's 60's product catalogues, you'll see that not all of Ive's designs are original, but very clever reinterpretations of, or at least homages to a lot of Braun's work. I wouldn't believe for a second that Ive would have gone out to copy anything, but clearly he studied a lot of Braun's work and it reads as the main if not the only influence in his design >> http://gizmodo.com/343641/1960s-braun-products-hold-the-secrets-to-apples-future </aside> Back on track though, Gareth is spot on about the need for some more proper thought and marketing behind the look of these cabs and the company identity, Aguilar is a very good example too - high quality products, at sensible prices with very strong branding. Those weird little PA style Thunderchild cabs could be the best thing in the world, but without considering how they look, they'll always be a geeky choice and never make it onto any big stages. I work in design and advertising these days and it's not rocket science or expensive. It doesn't take much to have someone come up with a nice logo for starters, a nice, clean, professional looking website, again, it won't break the bank either. I guess some of these products might have been a bit of an accidental success, and the brains behind them perhaps weren't prepared for it?... Eude
New AT7 tubes arrived today for the Orange Terror amp. They got it smack bang in the middle of me messing around with my effects for the first time with the Zoid and it was overloading the gain on the Terror sooooo bad, it wasn't looking good. 10 minutes later, new tubes installed...and well, it's awesome! Been playing it for about an hour or so now and it's so so usable with the less gainy valves, it's sounding really nice. The gain is far more usable on the amp now, and i've got it breaking up just nicely for that old school funk kind of vibe. Nice! So to answer Eude's question further on the Terror amp and a high output active bass...it's now everything I wanted it to be
Nice one mate, glad to hear it's working out for you! I'm now even more tempted, I'm not sure if I should thank you for feeding my GAS though... Eude

An EAD Foundation 112 might tickle your fancy when they become available?... >> http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/prosoundhire/foundation-112.htm Eude
I think only 2 songs were televised.
Thanks man, very kind! I'll have a swatch at them tomorrow with my breakkie

Is this on iPlayer or something?...

Thanks for that mate. I've got a couple of lovely basses which I'm very settled with, so my amp GAS is flaring up a bit now. The Terror Bass has been on my list since I first saw it, but was worried about how it would cope with an active bass with a lot of EQ options. Sounds like it can be made to work though Cheers, Eude
-
I see you've got a Terror Bass. How does this boutique'y fancy EQ'd active'd bass sound through that kind of amp? I've been used to solid state for a long time now, but something in me still hankers for a bit of valve warmth/grit... Eude

Lovely bass mate, congrats. I've always liked the look of those W&T Basses.
That's wicked mate. Congrats. A little orginality goes a long way in my book. There's too many fenders in this world...
Wise wise words Eude
Thanks man! I probably won't do a build thread, I'd rather just do a grand reveal when I've got it in my hands! It's not a complete custom job, strictly speaking they're all "standard" options I've chosen, it's just that there are so many standard options that I wouldn't be able to find EXACTLY the spec I want anywhere. It's gonna be a long wait.......
Fair enough mate, looking forward to seeing what you've decided on Eude
-
I've literally just submitted the order for my new one today....
Congrats mate, I saw that your green basic sold, can't believe it took that long. You going to start a build thread?... Eude

Really nice mate Nice playing and a very pleasant thick tone too. Top work fella!
Sorry for the thread revival, but evidence of long term usage (and success or failure) is important considering we're at the "it might blow up in a week or the first time you really crank it" price point. I thought that I would report on a very successful studio recording session using the RedSub combo. Captured what I think sounds pretty good with the Gibson Victory Artist using a combination of DI and mic'ing up the combo. A tickle of bass boost, a tickle of treble boost, a small low mid boost on the EQ, colour off, contour at about 1 o' clock. Some overdubs/mixing still to be done, but will share the results once I have them. The more I use mine, the happier I get with it. I'm off this weekend to Portsoy to play a few tunes with some of the band (acoustic thing) and the combo will be perfect for that. The weekend after that, it's a big pub gig and I doubt I'll have PA support, so I'll have to bring the noise. So this thing does: band rehearsal (combo), bass lessons (combo), little gigs (combo), big gigs (hooked up to bigger cab), recording and general amplification (watching films on my laptop with busted speakers, some tunes when I was painting the bedroom). Err, that's everything covered, isn't it? Oh, and the unusual smell I reported on back when I got it has mostly gone away. Either that or I've got used to it
Awesome Matt! Regardless of what model you have, RedSub, HB or Ibby, the form factor of these little pups is insanely versatile, practice amp that can push 500W, crazy. I've not tried recording using mine yet, but I might have to very soon, probably just DI though, as I'll be doing it at home. Interestingly, I set mine up very similar to you, bar the smidge of treble. The only thing I miss is a bit more natural low end, that would come from a bigger speaker, but an additional cab would sort all that out. Eude
Thanks for the helpful advice! I'm more trying to go for lightweight 1x12's I think , which is why I'm now drawn to the Vanderkely and Barefaced. I'm quite happy spending that bit more money on this purchase, but obviously saving money is always good! I'm about 5 minutes away from Bass Direct, so trying out gear isn't really a problem... It's just finding the right one. At the moment I'm pretty set on the Barefaced Midget... Can anyone recommend anything?
Bass Direct is going to be a great place to start. You won't find a Barefaced there, but you'll be able to try most of the main players in the lightweight 1x12 market for sure! I'm intrigued by the GK 1x12 NEO offerrings, very good vale for money. The Vanderkley ones are apparently insanely good, but man alive they're pricey too... I used to have an Aggie GS112, which I though was fantastic, but not really considered lightweight by today's standards, 2 of those together sounded SO bloody good though and they're built to last.
Board etc is back at Roscoe HQ so we are looking at final gluing etc over the next week or so and then onto finishing etc etc...
Yes, Zilla specialise in guitar cabs only, although you can get specific minor changes to help that low end (EG 18mm Ply instead of 15 etc) but with all the hype surrounding them I thought I'd see if anyone had checked them out. Also... Barefaced 1x12 vs Vanderkley 112EXT ... thoughts?
The Barefaced and Vanderkley cabs get a great write up, but they're also quite pricey, particularly the Vanderkley. If you want a vintage styled 2x12, you could maybe try Matamp, they seem to do very reasonably priced cabs and will probably get a you similar look to the Zillas.
Never heard of them to be honest dude! Food for thought here, you could get a really awesome used bass cab from the For Sale section on here for £400! Many are like new, and most of them go for about half the retail price
This is good advice, if you're not quite sure what you want and you can't get the chance to try lots of options, I'd consider trying out some second hand options first, you can get a lot more for your money for sure that way Eude
-
Aren't those Zilla cabs all guitar specific? At least the ones online anyway... I like the look of them though, and if they would do a bass cab, they represent very good value for money! Eude
Don't start me off......my head's spinning from all the comings and goings. I'm going to ban myself from the for sale section.
It's a dangerous place mate. You've got some loverly basses there, all basses covered if you'll pardon the pun, and a rig that fills me with jealousy, you'll not want for much else for at least a wee while I'll bet Eude
-
Nice collection mate You've gone through a fair few basses of late Eude
