So I've been thinking... The Greatest Bass Designer of All time.... Leo Fender, possibly unanimously - even if you don't like them the Precision, Jazz, Stingray, L1000, L2000 et al have pretty much defined the electric bass.... so that's part one done. So who's the second on the list? My suggestion... Ned Steinburger, The old cricket bat, headless composite... the Spector NS (as copied in Warwick's Streamer), his EUB and the lovely radius. discuss!
I'm having similar thoughts at the moment - do you keep gear that isn't getting played (well, on rotation) or do you move it on so that somebody else gets to put it to use?? I'm not sure when to start with downsizing my collection as I love all my gear for different reasons...I'm sure it must be the same for many other BCers.
what would happen to secondhand prices if we all started downsizing??! prices are odd at the moment - we've already had Genz and now TC do massive price cuts on their new stuff.... are not enough people buying bass gear at the moment?

If i were you... sell the big rig if you can - or at least the cab.

speaker leads... as in the ones between a amp and speaker.... not needed with powered speakers...

can someone please explain to me why.........

pedals on or off? -
are they a regular around here, check their feedback talk to them, get an opionion of them, not just what's the precision like, but what kinda music they play, what bands etc... not only will you find more about them but it's friendly and you might make a friend.
good thoughts guys, i gues s i am a collector of beutiful things, only reason is to let someone else enjoty the ones that im not playing :-)
guess that's the thing- If you can find someone that want's something you're thinking of moving on and you could use the money for something else then, I guess that's a nice sale. Otherwise the long drawn out tooth extraction of bumping a sales thread, fighting off tyre kickers and trying to find THAT buyer who both wants the bass, has the funds to play for it and doesn't live in outer mongolia or wherever.... I take the view that the stuff I've got now is pretty good- most the stuff won't be moving but the few things that I wouldn't be utterly opposed to moving on I would only do if the trade or money from a sale could be used for something else better. So unless you're wanting to get an upright, your dream sei, a veryreasonablypricedHellborgpreampinthesalessectionsuitsyousir or something specific then i don't think you gain much from culling for culling's sake.
I'm a bit late to this one. Like the specs on the bass. The therapist in me looks at the facing wood and wants to ask the question; "what picture do you see in that"?
If you follow Alpher on Facebook that game seems to be played a lot!

I like Warwicks Artisan - was going to ask how it compared to mine (based on a super fast trial you had!)
You could say the cost of having it delivered is the price you pay for buying something without trying it first... I don't think there's any 'should I, shouldn't I?' argument, it'll sell for whatever it's worth. Whoever buys it won't know (or care) what you paid for it. I bought a little Vox T-25 combo a little while back from eBay. I paid £54 iirc, and collected it from the guys house as it was 'sort-of' on the way home. I sold it recently for £100 + postage, having decided on a whim that I wanted something LOUDER! Result. I was very very happy indeed to sell it for more than I had paid. I advertised it honestly, presented it neatly and it found it's own value.
The Vox T-25 was my first ever amp - bought it brand new at £90 or so from sound control - when I went to move it on I found it going secondhand for £150 on ebay! odd item! I gave it to a mate as a wedding present in the end.

doesn't the SVT preamp have about 7 valves in it? how they fit all them and a power amp in there? Caitlinbread SFT is quite a good little (solid state) version of the SVT

The thing about Carvin is that is you look at the prices in US dollars and they are very competitive... look at the prices over here and they cost a bomb. Pick something of their's and google the model name- the top hit tends to be the American page- look at google's cache of the page and you get to see the US prices.

someone paid the postage! 300 including postage would be a bit cheaper if you picked it up. even if it wasnt for the cheap price of postage you get to try something out. imo creeping the price up to cover the postage cost is a bit cheap.

I really don't know why he did the whole basschat low price deal thing. The first time it was quite good and got a lot of our attention - with build threads started as people got excited about their forthcoming basses.... which petered out over time... and then another set of low price deals... what's the point in offering that sort of thing unless you can deliver on it? Like CamdenRob said.... it seems amateur - folk like Wal have long waiting time/lead time.... but are upfront about that. Which is fine as people know where they stand. Personally I don't know why why some people keep waiting and don't just try and recover their money by whatever means...
Knowing the prices on drivers in the UK you're usually better off to go with a good used cab than to replace drivers into an old cab. That way you can sell the old cab, rather than end up with a couple of used drivers to try to sell.
Bill I love the fact you post on here

it's not just the nickel/ss thing, it's the guague, round or hex core., the colour of the silks... .all make a difference.
There was a postal address on his website at Christmas, he built a ramp for one of my basses. The website shows the number as 01163 486954 and the address as 30, Steyning crescent, Glenfield, Leicester. LE3 8PJ
that's the registered address according to companies house too
Making it a little longer will initially put the wood under tension, which will act to further stiffen the panel, but after a while the tension element will be lost so it has no benefit over a brace that's exactly the right length - unless the brace is long enough to put a significant curve into the panel in which case there is a geometric stiffening effect (like an arch) but this is separate to the tension/stress element.
I am wondering how significant that curve would have to be... but then you do move away from the easy to build idea! When I was idly thinking of building my own cab (which would involve designing one too - I researched a bit about this, spoke to some of the guys here and quickly realised it was a bit out of my depth.... and went and bought a cab!) I did find a picture a bit like this and wonder, for a self build - given I can put in more time than a commercial cab can, wondered if building something from a inner frame outward might allow for enough stiffness.

horses for courses. Was it ever an either/or choice? Have both! And a Ray!

for the stupid amongst us.... what's tension bracing? I've seen a few types of cab bracing around. I don't know the proper names! Fearful seem to favour using wood on the panels to stiffen it - a bit like a acoustic guitar top. Bill Fitzmaurice seems to advise a grid of dowels pushing out, I think Andy at ACME does similar. And Barefaced seem to (possibly) use some simple matrix type bracing.
I have found that Warwicks favour nickel rather than steel strings, for me it seems to bring out the characteristics of the Warwick tone best. I have used Dr, D'addario and Dunlop strings to great effect.
Kev... you've had a fair few people agree with this... and warwickhunt too also used nickels.... can you expand why you find they work well with 'wicks? Just I'm going string shopping soon and always gravitate towards DR Full beams which are steels
