Played through an Ampeg 8x10 last night...
cheddatom replied to julesb's topic in General Discussion
I've played through the classic ampeg rig a couple of times when it's provided as shared backline. I've always found them very muddy and have to ask for bass in the monitors to compensate. Now I gig without an amp, and depending on the monitors at the venue, I get a better sound than ever. -
doesn't your synth have a level control? Just adjust it to match your bass?
Welcome to my life...
Haha, folk derived music in Nottingham? We must have played together surely? I'm on drums with Headsticks
yeah... it is a bit silly. Let's book an energetic band that people go to watch and jump about and dance... and ask them to play with acoustic instruments instead... It can be done but it's a bit odd. We've been asked a few times, however, and what they generally -but not always- meant was "we cannot allow a lot of noise"... so a sensible drummer with brushes and a slightly reduced kit if there's space issues too (we're not Rush , and watching the volumes has worked in those situations. Sometimes they really just wanted the look of acoustic instruments, which would plug into their PA. Ah well...
I don't mind doing actual acoustic gigs where I have to stay sober and play (drums) quietly with little or no PA support. That's a really challenge and sounds great! But these "acoustic" but not really acoustic gigs are a PITA
I've played a handful of 'acoustic' gigs... I just take an electric, but maybe take a natural finish one rather than a bright red to bring less attention to it Sounds much better. A fretless with nylon tapewounds sounds particularly good in a setting like that if you want to keep the 'acoustic vibe' more, but a straight electric generally works well cutting down treble.
Yeh, I'll make sure the bassist uses his electric if we ever do another. It just seems a bit silly really. If they want acoustic acts, they should book them. The promoter actually asked us to do our usual thing but use an acoustic guitar just for appearances. Weird

I'm on bass here, my mate Sam Ogden getting funky on the drums, rapper by the name of Blazer, Liv Campbell singing, and "88 Fingers Eddy" on the keys. We just jammed on this groove for a bit, then filmed a take. This wasn't supposed to be the final take, but the camera ran out of space, and we felt it was a good one so we just stuck with it. The Maze in Nottingham again on Saturday. It was supposed to be an acoustic set so our guitarist and bassist just used their acoustics plugged in. It didn't seem to make a massive difference except the bass was really muddy and the soundguy was clearly struggling to control feedback Anyway, the room was packed and singing and dancing, one of the best responses we've had I think, which was nice!

No one is suggesting we should have positive discrimination enforcing the make-up of bands. TimR was merely trying to explain the concept of positive discrimination, and why it's sometimes deemed necessary. More specifically, he was trying to explain why the MOBO awards could be a positive thing because several posters expressed opinions along the lines "Why does there have to be music awards for black music? We don't have music awards for white music, it's ridiculous!!" as though they fail to understand the disadvantages that come with being from an ethnic minority in our society, even today. *I hope I've not stepped on your toes there TimR
Positive discrimination is still discrimination
I have no idea what it's like to grow up black in Britain. What is obvious is that even today, after years of progress, black people are still disadvantaged in our society because of the colour of their skin. In an effort to keep the progress going in the hope of one day achieving equality, sometimes we implement what's known as "positive discrimination". If the MOBO awards are an example of positive discrimination (I'm pretty sure white people playing Music Of Black Origin can be nominated?) then good!! Hopefully they'll play a small part in the progress we need

I want to play drums in Vulfpeck so Jack Stratton can stay on keys and Theo Katzman stay on vocals and guitar
Well, it's not very rock and roll is it. Depends what kind of cases though... I used to play in a band where the drummer turned up with his kit in bin bags.
I played for years with no front head on the bass drum, so the floor tom would go inside, and the rack tom would balance on top. One trip for the drums, then one trip for cymbals, snare and stands. I thought it was super efficient and I never had a problem. Apparently it looks unprofessional so now I have to make 3 trips and f*** about with bags

I almost lost a gig because I didn't want to put my drums in cases, which seems about as petty as a watch?

My band got played on the radio last night (12th)
cheddatom replied to nash's topic in General Discussion
https://shadowsintolight.bandcamp.com/ great bass tone! Well done, I'd love to get played on Radio 1! I have to say googling "shadows into light band" brings up a youtube video for your song which isn't available - I'd sort that out and get it on Spotify etc ASAP to take advantage of your new exposure -
For me, getting the details right is just as important. In fact if your band does have an "image" the wrong details will be much more noticeable and detract from the overall picture.
I don't know. I wear dark blue trainers sometimes instead of black. I'm behind the drum kit, and they're basically black from the audience POV, but I've still been chastised by other band members for it. Obviously they would agree with you, but I've seen photos, and you can't see my shoes let alone tell what colour they are!
...IME most mens watches are ugly over-sized random lumps of plastic and metal.
I totally agree on that!

What bass do you regret selling? Was it love?
cheddatom replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
They had one in my local shop - 1978, for £600. I know they'd have come down to £500. It was the same colour as mine but with a black scratch plate and without the horrible gouge I put in it by running round the house playing. I gave it a go in the shop and it was so nice to play. I know some of it is switching from my big 6 strings to a tiny short-scale 4 string, but I really loved it -
No as I keep saying it is style AND substance. It seems to be a particularly male trait to pretend not to get this and IMO nothing to be proud of.
I get it. It's just that for most bands a wrist watch wouldn't impact the style in any significant way

What bass do you regret selling? Was it love?
cheddatom replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
My very first bass was a white musicmaster. I wouldn't know what year but I guess late 70s. I had no idea what I had. I loved that bass, but I'd bought a 6 string bass, was playing that in a band, and desperately wanted a drum kit, so I swapped the bass for a knackered old kit from a mate at school I actually got in touch with her on facebook after not seeing her for 14 years. Apparently it was her sister who had the bass. I offered £500 but she didn't want to sell. I think there was some sibling rivalry sh*t going on. -
I've never been in a band where sets were designed to the minute and where every night the set is exactly the same.Guess you just ignore the audience and do your thing.Sounds like a boring job to me.
I've done both and it's never boring!
-
Obviously it depends on the gig. For some bands image is extremely important, for others less so. I'm sure there are some world renowned jazz folks who can sell out big venues, and they can walk on stage in a t-shirt and jeans with a watch on their wrist.

This is a new band for me. I'm on drums (again ) but it's funky! This is our first release, but it's just a jam in the studio with some guitar overdubs. Enjoy! https://soundcloud.com/dandelionpussy/myself-i-am-a-miracle

i used to use a guitar combo on top of a bass combo. It was awesome!!!

Unwanted high whistling tone through audio interface.
cheddatom replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Recording
I had this with my Audiobox but it stopped when I ran my laptop off the battery. I can't remember what the interface was but I had another interface which you could power either via USB or with a PSU. When you used USB you got a horrible high pitched whining, when you powered it off a PSU you didn't -
After reading this I now desperately want a D'addario mug

I get this problem, especially when working on mixes for other people, my cure for the last 12 months has been to put on some vulfpeck, and properly listen to it (usually headphones) and enjoy it.
