1. I sold a Markbass rig, then bought another one... That's allowed right?
2. P bass with Entwistle neodymium pickups sounds like pure rage! Also, Peavey T40 basses, especially with the blade pickups, are mega aggressive.
3.
I find darkglass pedals are usually a bit to harsh for always on. Though i have been thinking of trying a b3k into bddi as a low/mid OD/boost.
I use a B3k into a BDDI and highly recommend it!*
4. If you're not sure what you are after, experimenting with multi fx might be the way to go. A lot of them are super complicated to use, or the effects might not be quite to the standard you would want, but for me the Zoom B3 is an exception. It works like three stomp boxes next to each other, and most of the effects are really good and usable.. even some of the overdrives are really good.. and it has a tuner on it!
5. Love the look of the Ultra! Though I'd probably prefer the Hi Mid knob to be in the distortion stage rather than the other way round... I'm not the expert though!
6. Elites are worth trying, they're less scooped than ProSteels and quite affordable.
7. I like single coil pickups, lots of compression and a couple of gain pedals. I've cleaned up my signal as much as I can but still get a bit of hiss, which if I'm not careful can develop into a lot of feedback in venues setup in a certain way. A noise gate is pretty much a necessity for me if I don't want to compromise my sound! I've tried a couple with varying results. The one on the Zoom B3 is actually one of the better ones, but it does alter the tone, and it wastes one of the three slots I can use. The ISP Decimator was purchased after a lot of recommendations, and I'm very happy with it now!

Zoom B3

Amazingly good quality for such a relatively low priced piece of equipment. I use mine for recording, and it stays on my live pedalboard as a tuner, and for any non gain based effect
9. mybass has pretty much nailed it. If space/portability is major issue, get the traveller cabs, but they are of a lesser quality than the standard series. I can't tell you which speaker size is best to go for, but I used to own a 4x10, sold it in a moment of madness, then got another because of how much I loved it. Whenever people put their head through it at gigs they are full of compliments about the sound and how efficient it is, so I can definitely recommend a 2x10 / 4x10
10. I would use an overdriven treble/mid heavy sound (this will smooth out the peaks without making it sound tame), blended with a clean low/mid sound to fill the mix out. Maybe add some light chorus and/or flanger to give it more texture.. but there are many approaches that could work!
11. A fair point but it's better to be safe than sorry! I've always made sure my cabs RMS power handling is higher than the amp's stated power and I've never had to deal with a broken speaker. Sure, I have used cabs which aren't as high power handling on a few occasions with great results, but to me it isn't worth the risk
12. If it absolutely had to be a combo, it would be the Markbass CMD102P. The best sounding and loudest one hand lift I've ever personally used. I'd have to keep my pedals though
13.
Asking price was $1000 an it sold for $1000. Sad eh,to think any old beat to hell Fender will sell for a damn sight more than £647. Glad I never based my retirement plan on selling my Peaveys
I hope they never increase in value, the affordability is one of the things that makes them so special!
14. I always hated the look of the slanty pickups but it looks gorgeous on this. Great find!! If you get bored of it, let me know
15. Ports are at the back which allows the cab to be smaller, therefore more portable. You lose a bit of low end (but not through the PA if you DI, obviously!)
16. I once had a LOT of beer spilled on mine and its never had any problems. You definitely received a faulty one, and the first I've heard of! Glad you got a replacement, try not to let places mess about sending stuff away for "inspection and repair".
17. "Woman, I bought a new bass today. By the way, whats for dinner?"
18.
It's down to cab size rather than driver size. If you've not got the lows, try the 102 STD cabs. Bigger cabs = bigger lows with the Markbass cabs.
I was about to suggest the same thing. Using their front ported 4x10 I was getting terrifying amounts of bass! I use the sealed one now which is the same size and it's just perfect. Same huge sound, just a little tighter
19. My first comp was the DC9 as well. I used it to even out the levels a bit which it did quite nicely. Upgraded to the Aguilar TLC after scouring ovnilabs, and it does more of the same but you can put it to more extreme settings. The market has massively opened up in the last few years though so you really can't go wrong easily!
20. Both the above posts have summed it up perfectly. The volume difference between a 4 ohm and 8 ohm cab will be like 3dB so not massive. If you are certain you'll never get a second cab go for 4 ohms, but I'd always recommend 8 ohms in case GAS sets in...and the volume difference is so negligible you may as well keep your options open I'm lucky, my amp has a 4/8 ohm switch so I get full power out of mine no matter what I do
21. Basses? Just the one actually! A 5 string, which I probably gigged three times... Never got on with it even though it's a lovely bass. Strangely I'm very much at home with 4 or 6! Got 4 basses off eBay though But I have bought an amp, a combo, 4 pedals and a few packs of strings off here
22. I like PJ basses. Having them both on full adds a nice mid scoop effect, but I put the J pickup quite low down so that it's a more subtle addition to the tone, just adding a little bit of sharpness. Works very well with overdrive! I find if the pickup is too close to the strings it's too harsh and nasal. What I really mean is that I can't hide my sloppy technique as easily
23. Wonderful sounding cabs these, and a bargain at full price, let alone what this one's going for!
24. I I've received my strings, along with the t shirt too, nice touch and very generous! as a huge fan of Elixir strings I'm looking forward to fitting them to my bass, but I will hold off until the weekend as I have a rehearsal followed by a gig. I will be using two almost identical basses, one with the old Elixirs and one with the new for a proper comparison!
25.
I've never tried that, but I will now. Next time I am stumped by a problem, I'll take the bass out of its case, lie in there myself, and wait for inspiration to strike.
You won't believe how long it took me to work out what you were getting at there.... But my case is at home so I had to work purely on brainpower... Scary!
