1. There will always be exceptions... But roundwounds are generally the best. I actually find its harder to be accurate on lighter gauge strings but YMMV. If your bass doesn't have awful soft fretwire, then stainless steel strings might excite you, as they will give you even more brightness
2.
and the problem with that is...?
I'm already in the dog house for owning three!
3. He's a great player, and normally 'proper bass' players don't interest me much! His sideways bass playing is pretty cool too
4.
Best topic title ever?
I can't believe this topic hasnt been dragged into the gutter... I'm disappointed!
5. This is one of the ones Mark D Philips didn't want to be seen with
6.
try some more
But then I might want more!
7.
why do you assume a passive bass has to have a significantly different midrange and attack from an active bass? These two things are unrelated to whether you have a preamp there or not (with or without EQ). Not saying passive is worse or anything, but "just sayin'"
All of the active basses I've tried sounded 'smoother' in the midrange, with a big bottom and and extremely glassy highs. Not bad sounds by any means, but didn't seem to have as much character to me. I found I was always turning the treble down, but leaving the mids where they were as they didn't sound 'right' boosted. All this is IME of course!
8. It definitely is. Market's a bit slow at the moment as everyone's feeling the pinch, but it will sell eventually
9. Haha I'm not the only one that compares the F1 to a car stereo then! Good luck with the sale! These are are great deals
10.
Seeing as I have no bids yet, about 23
We are a right bunch of tyre kickers
11. I thought it was pretty normal for the first few frets of a string to sound tw***y and bright, getting darker/warmer as you go higher up the neck. Personally I would simply play the notes in a different position if I wanted that sound. If it's too dificult to do cleanly, or the player simply doesnt want to I'm not sure what I could suggest other than using multi-band compression to try and even the sound out but even that won't work completely. EDIT: I can't believe i misspelt 'twangy'
12. Now that I take two basses to gigs (a 5 string in standard tuning, and a 4 string thats half a step down), if an emergency ever did crop up I would just tune the other one up and down a lot
13. The original point definitely stands regardless of the active/passive sidetrack we've gone onto.. Having a spare is always a good idea! Thankfull I have never in 8 years brought one along, nor have I needed one... phew!
14.
actually... active basses normally have switching jack sockets. often enclosed Them old fashioned passive basses often have cheaper open jack sockets - so yes cos you can pinch them together and mend them easily in an emergency .
Yeah, er, what he said
15. This amused me way too much... I need to go on holiday or something
16.
Luckily he had a strat as a spare.
Active?
17. Personally, I would use a 2x10 on its own, two 2x10s, or maybe a 2x10 and 1x15 together
18. Never heard of them to be honest dude! Food for thought here, you could get a really awesome used bass cab from the For Sale section on here for £400! Many are like new, and most of them go for about half the retail price
19.
Yeah think I might be the only one but I just couldn't get in to it at all
To be fair I loved the Metropolis 2000 one aswell even though the vocals were REALLY bad
20.
So your passive basses work with knackered jack sockets then? I will get my coat..........
For some reason I have never had any sort of equipment failure with my passive basses, not even on my 4 string thats been thrown about, dropped on concrete, the works! Might be something to do with them being made by Peavey (solid as a rock) but I just feel safer using them!
21. I only own passive basses, this is one of the reasons! Both the actives I've owned have had electronics trouble... Plus I prefer the midrange and attack of a passive!
22.
Bought the Score CD. Listened once and took it back. Got my money back. I'm a big DT fan but that was sh*te !
Wow really? I actually think it was one of their best (if not THE best) DVDs!
23. A mate of mine had the guitar version of this. Sounded better than his Boss GT-8!! The synth and pitch effects are incredible
24.
That sounds sh*te. I recall the one gig where an orchestra worked (Metallica, S&M). And even then, it would have been a better show without it, and it was a one off event in a venue designed for the acoustic perfection an orchestra needs. Can you imagine how bad a mix of orchestra and rock band would sound in one of the enormodomes that Rush tend to play these days?
Dream Theater's Score DVD with that orchestra was effin' amazing though!
25. I heard a rumour that they might be playing Download Festival!
