1. Noooo.... they headlined at Lambeth Country Show last weekend, but I flaked out in the head and didn't get the see them :-(
 2.
That's rather a lot of money for something that looks like it was moulded out of old Mini Babybel wax.
Yep, melted plastic was my first thought!
 3.
Kasim Sulton anyone?
Oh yes!
 4.
Calling all orchestras 'cover bands' is a tricky one for me. Any piece written for an orchestra is unable to be performed by the composer, as he/she is only one person, and one person can't be an orchestra.
A gross generalisation is that in classical music, the composer is the "star", and in other genres it's the performer. There are of course, "star" classical performers, and in recent years the writer/producer has come more into the foreground, getting first billing in "writer/producer ft. singer" ventures. But for non-classical, I'll go with the "not played the one(s) who made it famous" as the hallmark of the cover band.
 5. Went to a uke jam with my £20 soprano uke last week... now looking at baritone ukes and fretted and fretless Kala U-Basses! I see I just missed a pair of Kalas on here, which is just as well as I'm skint!
 6. Since this thread started I've been trying to recall a certain track - and here it is (the B side to From East to West IIRC)
 7.
If you don't like joining in Blue's threads, don't.
Now you're just being silly!
 8.
I, for one, live in constant fear of brontosauruses.
I, for two, hadn't lived in fear of brontosauruses until I read your post. Now I'm terrified.
 9. ^^^ Yep, as observed re. Brexit campaigns, we live in a "post-factual" society :-(
 10.
More PC f***wittery. Apparently in our own educational system they are currently discouraging the use of "brain storming" because it might offend those with epilepsy!!!
And those with astraphobia too, I presume!
 11.
Totally personal preference. Bear in mind the fret positions all over the neck vary slightly (if same scale length) depending on the number of frets. I don't play anything with less than 24, for the only reason that it is most comfortable for me. I find it odd playing on the 12th fret so far down the neck on 20 fret types etc.
Good point. Also there's the impact on the body - more frets typically means deeper cutaway.
 12. I was about to complain that this thread is in the wrong forum, but I see it's "Other Instruments", not "Other Musical Instruments", so that's OK
 13. Ah, so that audience I played to must have been silently cheering...
 14.
Yes. That's my point. It's a shame that the public think it's something special when someone sings a cover on a TV show that sounds a bit different to the original recording. I have a hard time convincing the band I play with to try anything with strings, keys, brass etc as we're a three piece. All it takes is a little imagination and you're off.
Ah, you'd rather it was the norm than seen as something special/ Oddly enough, since you mentioned Mr Cowell, the X Factor live shows are actually notable for imaginative re-interpretations. I think as long as the song is recognisable, the punters are happy.
 15.
Then when you get people like Simon Cowell saying "Well done, you took that song and made it your own.", it's like it's a compliment and that no one else can do that kind of thing. It's a shame really.
Not sure if I'm reading you correctly, but why's it a shame? I sooner hear a "original" performance (in which the performer has some emotional investment) than an accurate but lifeless replication of someone else's performance.
 16.
Yes, but cover it with what?
Doom-sludge.
 17. Love it, I remember wigging out to this in my full new-romantic garb! Now my right hand hurts just watching this...
 18.
I suppose the real question is whether you want to try and sand out the marks where he's engraved the note names into the fingerboard...
I thought they were quite endearing!
 19. Bumping - slightly GASsing for a Kala U-Bass (trade options in OP updated accordingly), so trying to be a one-in, one-out kinda guy!
 20.
musical differences.
I was musical, they were different
 21.
Thanks for the replies. I now know what DAT, and ADAT is. Only around 20 years late
The contents of my various must-clear-that-out-sometime boxes include 1/4" tape reels, DAT tapes, Sony minidiscs, Iomega Zip drives (and the odd 3.5" floppy), plus VHS and Betamax video tapes - none of which I can play/read any more!
 22.
Regarding re-amping, I know this is very widely used and I have tried it myself. But, I have found that I play things slightly differently when different tones are involved. Especially overdriven tones. Occasionaly when using overdrive I will find certain notes can highlight some very pleasing harmonics, so I might just hold that note a little longer of accent it a bit more (if it fits the tune). So, personally I try to find the best tone for the performance and then try to capture it as best I can.
Absolutely, GIRAS - get it right at the source. Joe Gilder ( of home studio corner) says if you don't like the sound you're hearing, don't hit record. The performance will inevitably be modulated according to what we're hearing by as we play. But once it's down and you're happy with the performance, then "cheat" as much as you like to get it sounding as awesome as yo can.
 23. Nice! I particularly like the variations in the arrangement between verse 1 and verse 2.
 24.
This will probably be deemed as wrong by the experts, but when I did it, I kept my right (plucking) hand in the same position as a 4 string, which was to have my thumb resting on the E String (which on a 5 string became between the B and E string). This allowed for good muting of both strings when not playing them, and meant my hand was still in the same position relative to the EADG strings. As the years have gone on, I've changed my hand position, and (I think due to this) I now find it harder to go back to a 4 string than when my hand was as I've said above!
Yep, I found the biggest challenge was muting the B string - this led me to adopt the floating-thumb technique, which I now prefer on fours too.
Put your 4 string basses away until the 5er becomes second nature.
Good advice - jump in at the deep end!
