The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
fretmeister replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I am currently playing my dirt cheap (well - before my mods!) Jim Deacon P bass. I'm really liking the narrow string spacing at the bridge. The other shorties I have use normal 19mm to 20mm spacing at the bridge so the neck splays from the nut quicker than it would on a long scale. I quite fancy looking for other shorties with narrower spacing at the nut. I think the Deacon is about 16.5 mm. Does anyone know if they did a Jazz version? I'd like to have that option if I can find one somewhere. -
Empress Bass Comp vs. Lusithand Alma Comp MkII
fretmeister replied to tobiewharton's topic in Effects
It just works perfectly at every setting without compromise. It's multiband. There's no volume dip and swell. It has an astonishingly low noise floor even at high settings. It allows the natural sound of the bass through - as clean as the Empress I had. I suppose that last thing could be a turn off for some if they want a compressor to change the tone a bit, but for me it's an advantage. When I have some funds I'm going to buy another one so I don't have to swap it between my pedalboards. -
Empress Bass Comp vs. Lusithand Alma Comp MkII

I sold all my other compressors when I got a Boss BC-1X. I no longer own an Empress Mk1, Cali76, DG etc. That new Boss has been a revelation. -
I really like the tone of La Bella Deep Talkin' Flats. I don't like how they feel grabby on my right fingers if my hands are even slightly sweaty. This also seems to happen with other highly polished flats. Others, such as Ti, chromes etc don't have that problem. Instead of using fast fret or talc, I'm thinking about getting some really fine wet & dry paper and roughing the surface up a little where I would pluck the strings to see if that makes a difference. If I do that really gently I am hoping I won't weaken the string and make it more likely to break.

I had a Tecamp - I found it to be very clean in tone and I like a bit more warmth. A very good amp, but definitely with a neutral sound.

You could get a used Ashdown RM800 Evo2 for that. The fan (on mine anyway) is very quiet, and it's very light. I really like mine!

Yup. Our stage. -
Public Liability Insurance for a band

The band I'm currently in - yes. I don't run the band, I just play so I wasn't dealing with it. But a bit of the stage collapsed and somebody broke an ankle. -
Public Liability Insurance for a band
fretmeister replied to Woodinblack's topic in General Discussion
The venue will have it. And if the venue can argue that it wasn't their fault they will try to pass that onto the band instead. The Venue's insurance does not cover negligence by the band. Denials of liability on the grounds that the actual negligent act was due to another person / entity is extremely common. Examples are: Venue not responsible for actions of bouncers that are provided by a security company. Venue not responsible for food poisoning when the food was provided by a catering company. Insurers do not cover anyone other than their own policyholders. The venue insurers will act in the best interests of the venue, and usually that means against the band. The other reason for it - if the band think the venue are at fault, then the band's insurance will push liability to the venue. They have the money to do that. The band alone usually does not. -

A new release of Oscar Peterson Trio - Live in Lugano, from 1964. Was released last week. His estate have put all the tracks up on youtube. Ray Brown is on the bass. -
There’s no tapered ones listed on their site, so I suspect they don’t exist.

Anyone got a link to the Black Friday deal? The iOS app store isn't showing that price option. -

Barefaced Three10 Teaser: Anybody Know More?
fretmeister replied to Obrienp's topic in Amps and Cabs
I really want one, but as I'm about to quit my band I won't be buying just yet. -
Ugh. I've just realised that as I've volunteered there for over 10 years that means they'll want to do a gift and thank you routine at the last gig. I hate that crap. I might need to tell them straight after the gig instead of now. It won't affect them looking for a replacement at all - they wouldn't do that until the following term anyway when they knew who had turned up.
-
Definitely. I've had breaks in the past ranging from 6 months to 2 years. Sometimes I've played a bit at home, sometimes not at all. I play sax and guitar as well so it might be that I'll end up playing them at home for a change.

Barefaced Three10 Teaser: Anybody Know More?
fretmeister replied to Obrienp's topic in Amps and Cabs
I suspect the tweeter will be optional as with all the other cabs. When I asked him, I did specifically ask if a tweeter version would be available. I would expect the weight to be between the two10 and the 410. The Super Twin is about 17-18kg depending on metal or cloth grill so it's not heavy, but it's still more than I'd want to carry when wheels are an option. Alex puts wheels on all the taller cabs - ST/BT3/610 etc etc as they are just easier to move. It will be same width as the Super Twin but have a smaller depth as per the Two10. The dimensions for those are on the website. I've had a Super Twin and 10CR cabs and I much prefer the tone of the 10CR cabs compared to the 12 inch cones. I currently have a One10T and a One10. I'd prefer a single unit on wheels. -
I've been pondering this a lot. The "is it time to leave" question is in my head on most days and I think that says it all. While the new guy I mentioned is really excellent, I've been there for 10 years and I am just not feeling it anymore. Even if I had total control over the set list it wouldn't make any difference. I just need a good break. Playing bass is my escape from work / people etc and I will not let it become a millstone that I end up hating as much as the crap stuff. So, I'll do the next 2 rehearsals and then the Christmas concert and then call it a day. Maybe I'll look for another, different band next year or the year after.

Barefaced Three10 Teaser: Anybody Know More?
fretmeister replied to Obrienp's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yup, I asked Alex and this is the reply email: "Yes, vertical with tiltback wheels and a tweeter. We've had some alternate impedance drivers made to solve the annoying impedance problem! It's not going to be three 10"s in a vertical line, it'll be two above each other and one in the middle off to the side - makes for a much more sensibly shaped cab and still has great dispersion because the middles of the drivers (where the mids/highs come from) aren't side by side. Same height and width as a Super Twin, same depth as a Two10S/Four10/Six10. Same wheels and handles as a Six10. Should be v cool!" -
EBS for me as well. They've been reliable and they are tiny.
