1.
..so that you can be heard when you play with other musicians..Acoustic basses are notoriously quiet...
+1 I have one but it's far too quiet in a pure acoustic setting and howls like a demented cat unless I spend an inordinate amount of time playing with positioning and amp settings.
 2.
The basic answer to all of this is: Some folks like all valve Some folks like hybrids Some folks like solid state Some folks don't really give a sh*t if their rig sounds good and doesn't break every week.
Spot on. Doesn't matter if it's valves in a milk crate or transistors in a biscuit tin, if it sounds right it is right...
 3.
OK, so if I write IMO or IME after everything I write, it makes it ok then? What he has written is misguided and probably based on very little experience. That's the problem with this site. People could be listening to the advice of people who have sh*t gear and think they sound good.
And what you are writing is inflammatory, judgemental and based solely on what you think is right. As I have previously stated, there is no right answer as one size does not fit all.
 4.
Do an A/B test with an all valve amp and a hybrid with a valve in the preamp and you'll see the massive difference. Come on guys. I know solid state amps are cheaper, lighter and cost less to mantain but please don't tell me they sound better!
It depends on what sound you are after. For me, valves are a non starter - I don't need or want that 'gritty' sound whereas you obviously do. There is no right or wrong, just choosing the most appropriate tool to do a job.
 5.
Rubbish!
No. It's an opinion as clearly stated.
 6. Brown Eyed Girl?
 7.
(I've had the VATman round twice, they've looked at the house and gone elsewhere)
If they came round here then they'd be giving me money...
 8. I like valves in guitar amps but have no use for them at all in bass amps. Valves add a certain 'grit' that I don't need, or indeed want - in my world, if a tune needs some grit then that's for the guitarist to provide.
 9. Anything alkaline for me. I've been buying £1 Kodak ones from SkintStretcher and they're lasting about 3 months before I automatically bin and replace them, which I'd do with a Duracell anyway.
 10. Two real sticking points as far as I can see. 1) Ibanez necks are a lot slimmer than Fender style necks, so the neck pocket on the guitar body will need to be enlarged to accomodate the new neck. 2) You might need to adjust the positioning of the neck within the pocket to allow the '12th fret' to become equidistant to the nut and the bridge saddles.
 11. In terms of amplification, the output will still be 700W. Power amps (the components not the overall 'box') don't work on mains voltage, they work on much lower DC voltages and don't care (or know) where that voltage is derived from - as long as they get the appropriate voltage they'll work. EDIT: Like what Mr F just managed to say in one sentence.
 12.
I was wondering if anyone can help me, I'm looking to buy my first bass and I'm looking at the SRX300 however, I hear its more for hard rock/metal which I'm not. I like to use it for soul, funk, blues. So is the SRX300 just marketing hype and similar to the SR300 or should I really steer away?.
I hear this quite a lot about the SR range and it's just a pile of cr*p. A bass is just a tool, the same way that a hammer is just a tool - you don't have different hammers because your bashing nails into different pieces of wood, you just adopt a different technique. An SR is more than capable of performing well in hard rock\metal genres but is equally capable of being used in other genres. I've used an SR for many years now and it's done everything from Abba tribute acts to XTC covers. If you want to play around in the funk genre then IMO you really don't want to be playing around with flatwound strings - as a 'listener' they sound truly awful used in that way.
 13. Three hours a day minimum for me unless I'm gigging. I start off with anything I'm currently working on and then hit YouTube and just select random tracks.
 14.
How can they do them for this sort of money??
Bugerad if I know...
 15. Had this a few times. I just scrawl something that may or may not be a signature.
 16.
I have had to turn down voting for some friends' band in a comp exactly because FB required me to give it access to my innermost secrets.
Which in my case wouldn't amount to much...
 17. +1 to both of the above. If you're just starting out then keep it simple - there's plenty of time to start honing your sound once you've got to grips with the basics.
 18. I've been a Tour 700 user for just over a year now. Like all Peavey kit, it weighs a ton, but I'm an 'old school' sort of chap who equates weight with power. It's a loud, pretty much uncoloured, amp - about as 'no frills' as you can get. I like that in an amp, people are there to hear me, not a mass of electronics. The graphic has a fair bit of boost although the Octaver function is sh*te (as every built in one I've ever tried has been). So, they aren't trendy, they aren't flash looking and they don't have a price tag that looks like a phone number - but it'll still be working long after most of us are sat dribbling in bath chairs... <insert drummer joke here>
 19. If the existing PA is powerful enough for the duo then there's no reason for them to use the proposed bigger kit. If they do want to use the bigger PA then the guitarist needs to buy two 'shares' in the PA. What we did was split the cost of the PA between us and then put 10% of our earnings from it into a maintenance budget. Over the last couple of years we've actively sought well paying gigs and built up enough of a cash surplus from this and have paid ourselves back. If anyone leaves, then they take nothing with them. If the entire band folds then the gear will be sold off and the revenue split between the founder members of the band,

 21.
Eh??? Bluuhhhhh.... Duhhhhhh... Duurrrrrr... Hur-hurrrr..! *dribbles onto keyboard*
...and that's before we even get round to mentioning the nervous twitch...
 22.
That's neat. If you play as well as you express yourself in words I reckon you're pretty good
Thankyou. (The cheque is in the post.... )
 23.
Do this! I didn't meet any musicians I wanted to play with but I'm engaged now to the first person I spoke to!
You haven't made it clear whether it was love at first sight or a dare...
 24. After 32 years of playing bass I'm adequate at what I do, experienced enough to be able to dummy what I don't often do and (usually) smart enough to avoid being placed in a position where I am going to fail miserably. Self proclaimed expertise is worth nothing.
 25.
Jam nights would be a good idea and my teacher even suggested that to me. The thing is having the nerve to go in on your own. I think the answer might be to just go along to watch a few times first just to get the feel of it. So I'm trying to drag a friend along to one this week or next week just to see how the land lies.
Well if you're after some plug and play/jam type things then we're surrounded by them over here and I'm generally the only bass player at them (I help run one of them and frequent two others as well !).
