1. I used to see loads of Fane speakers back in the 80's. They had a dedicated bass range back then - Studio 10/12/15B - 250W 8Ω drivers. Those drivers really punched one hell of a wallop in a well designed cabinet.
 2.
I think we should have a bassist of the month thread,
Crikey. The English Language has neither enough superlatives or swear words to talk about me for an entire month...
 3. You are a real musician when... ...you insist on trying different doorbells in B&Q to find one that's in concert pitch...
 4.
Wasn't that a bit of a "Rough Patch for you though?"... what? just saying
Well I did have some doubts for a minute or two in 1994 but I managed to get over it...
 5.
Your modesty holds you back...
It's not easy being a self effacing God...
 6.
^^ This is my list, too. ^^ Him, I mean. Not me.
7. Broken into years to make easier reading... 1980 - 1985 - Me 1986 - 1990 - Me 1991 -1992 - Me 1993 - 1995 - Me 1996 - 1998 - Me 1999 - 2001 - Me 2002 - 2004 - Me 2005 - 2006 - Me 2007 - 2009 - Me 2009 - 2012 - Me I'm so good I scare myself sometimes...
 8.
Another possibility is to use expanding foam - the sort of stuff builders use for sealing gaps. Get a plastic bag and use it to line the carrying case. Squirt a load of expanding foam into it and fold the top of the bag over (needs to be a fairly large bag). Then push the light (or other object) halfway into the base of the foam-filled bag and leave the foam to set. The trick is to use enough foam to half-fill the carrying bag when fully expanded and set, so some experimentation might be needed. Next, get another plastic bag and squirt a load of expanding foam into it. Close the top of the bag and gently push it into the carrying case over the top half of the object to be protected. Again, the trick is to use just the right amount of foam. When set, you should have two plastic bags moulded to the shape of the object to be protected on the inside and to the carrying case on the outside.
+1 That's the way we've made inserts for our flightcases.
 9. Many amps have Hi/Lo input sockets. I strongly suspect that most bass players just whap everything in the Hi socket the same as I do regardless of the bass type.
 10.
OK, fair points, except . . . after buying all the gear, it costs a band nothing to play a gig. A promoter might be certain of their own ability to organise etc, but they can't be certain about a band's appeal, especially new/unsigned bands.
That's the first rule of business though - 'can I sell this?' If the answer is 'no' then you just walk away from the deal.
Again, I'm in no way agreeing with pay-to-play but I am trying to understand the market forces that have created the concept in the first place. We can't deny it exists and we can't deny that many bands go along with it, so why is this?
Several reasons I reckon. 1) A potential, albeit a longshot, 'shortcut' to getting a following. 2) A naivity about the way the music industry (generically) works. 3) A tendency to get caught up in these schemes and either convince themselves that 'this is normal' or 'a good deal' or, worse still, don't have the courage to say 'NO'. 4) Seeing PTP as an expense in the same way as recording a CD. 5) Inability to look at the larger mathematical picture and see the reality behind PTP. 7) Inability to count.
 11.
Coincidentally, so do I. Must be that bass player thing about carrying tools and spares for every occasion. Have only ever detected one faulty mains socket though, a missing earth connection. A good thing for the gig bag and only £7: http://www.maplin.co...ket-tester-9800
I went for a slightly more sophisticated version but the general idea is the same. I've had a couple of defects, generally missing or high resistance earths.
 12.
Yep, the old risk/reward equation. So a band taking zero financial risk gets little reward and the promoter taking all the risk reaps the benefits. That's how the world works.
Zero financial risk? By the time a band has equipped itself, paid for rehearsal space and cut the obligatory CD, that's a pretty big financial commitment. Whether that is classed as a 'risk' or not is pretty immaterial - they've invested that money plus time to get to where they are. A promoter spends a couple of hundred quid (if that) and expects to get £1000+. that 'risk' is pretty much non existant and, in my vernacular, constitutes taking the p*ss. If a promoter is that certain of their abilities then there is no need for them to operate PTP, if they aren't certain of their abilities then they are in the wrong industry.
 13.
Thanks a lot gents, however i have more dumb questions.
Dumb is not asking and getting it wrong. If you don't know the answers then these are smart questions.
 14.
We were very lucky went to the gig expecting a gazebo or a trailer and got this !
That's a bit bl**dy good!
 15. I've been gigging for well over 30 years now. I've never paid to play and I never will.
 16.
I wouldn't be too concerned about playing in a (dry) tent with power from a single-length extension cable plugged into a house socket fed from an RCD-protected circuit.
+1 Provided the insulation is intact and any joins are IP56 rated then I'd not worry in the slightest in that scenario. I always carry a mains tester to make 100% certain that I have an earth and that L and N haven't managed to get reversed courtesy of dubious wiring.
 17. I'm quite content with what I have at the moment. ESP LTD 6 string - great for cramming piles of notes and throwing chords into jigs and reels without having to stretch too far. Ibanez SR505 - a workhorse/average bass that suits most stuff. Aria SB900 - a relic from the 80's that has that typical 80's sound that I struggle to get using more modern instruments. Fender Jazz Fretless - a good, pretty much generic, fretless. Speaks for itself really. NS WAV - a bit of a luxury this one but just looks more appropriate than a bass guitar in many of the venues I play at. Takamine Acoustic Bass - Very much replaced by the NS WAV these days. Nearly £500 worth of sheer nastiness. Shifting along slightly I also have a Yamaha CJ32 6 string acoustic, Daion 12 string acoustic, Fender Stratocaster and a 200 year old Scottish Fiddle - some of which I can actually play.
 18.
That's not true. I went out looking for an idiot on the corner at the end of my street. There was none there. Two and a half hours I waited on that corner for an idiot to arrive, and non came. I gave it 20 more minutes and then came home.
LMAO
 19. I've got a 4x10 already and I'm not overly keen on it (it's consigned to the practice studio). Stacking 2x10's isn't really practical - my amp case doesn't sit on top of an upturned 2x10 very well and I don't want to be crawling about on the floor getting to the controls or knocking the whole lot over.
 20.
If you add a second 8 ohm cab impedance will halve, giving you a total load of 4 ohms.
That's absolutely true in this case, but the 'halving rule' only works if both cabs have the same impedance. If you're mixing impedances then this is quite a handy little tool.
 21.
1x15s aren't uncommonly in the exact same sized box as a 2x10.
I'm still trying to work that one out...
 22. 2x 1x15s take up far too much storage\transport space and it's nice to be able to just sling a 2x10 in the boot for small gigs and just re-eq to suit. For larger gigs, the 1x15 moves plenty of air and raises the 2x10 up to a sensible height so I can hear it.
 23. I treat basses as tools and have no emotional attachment to them. I have different basses for different jobs, just the same as I have different screwdrivers for different types of screw.
 24. That's what I'm using and it suits me just fine. I'd recommend using cabs from the same manufacturer ranges if you possibly can as some combinations can sound a bit naff. Cue the experts who will insist that it's all nothing but a 'marketing ploy' despite the fact that it's one of the most common multiple cab configurations going... sometimes you have to just ignore science and go with what your ears tell you...
