I'd like to know why piobaireachd never got here. It's an amazing form.
As much as I like piobaireachd, it is a bit of an oddity. A bit too regimented to be classed as folk, although it has traditional roots and seems to have originated in the Hebrides, which would make it Irish, but it's not. I can only surmise that it's come from a different planet with a sense of humour too sophisticated for us to understand.
It is also possible that we see the bass in Scottish music coming from the more formal dance band tradition (think Jimmy Shand) which came from the Dance Hall tradition whilst the equivilent bands in Ireland (Kilfenora Ceili Band etc) came from a more informal, domestic setting. Just speculating
Interesting speculation and sounds perfectly plausible to me.

I use a FishMan Preamp just to give me a little bit of extra umph when using my EUB. Can anyone spot what happens if you try sliding the volume up when the unit is upside down on a dimly lit stage?
Interestingly, bass seemed to find a place in scottish folk that it hasn't in Irish. No idea why.
I was thinking about this not so long back. The only thing that I can put my finger on is that folk music was based around the available instruments. Perhaps double basses were more easily available on the UK mainland than over in Ireland?

Who's had a jubilee gig cancelled because of the rain?
In that case may I suggest you wear protective clothing, thus: You can't be too careful.
Ha! So my last gig pictures are on the www (wimbledon womble web) already then! -
Who's had a jubilee gig cancelled because of the rain?
icastle replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
We were asked some time ago if we'd do an outdoor Jubilee gig on Sunday, but we declined as we had a paid gig the night before that was going to see us getting in at about 3am. We're headlining at a nice little local(ish) music festival next month so we're kinda hoping that there won't be any water left in the sky by then... EDIT: ...and as it's on the back of a pair of trailers it'll give me ample opportunity to 'fall off the back of a lorry'. -

This has to be the most disturbing thread title I've seen for a long time... Phosphor Bronze strings have always given my fingers a metallic smell, I just ignore it. One thing I'd never recommend though is restringing an acoustic guitar with electric guitar strings - they sound absolutely horrid and rattle more than a nuns knees at an Iron Maiden concert.

I had the p*ss taken out of me as well. I just pointed out that intelligent people tend to feel a need to seek out others of the same ilk whilst you'll find an idiot on any street corner. They went away and thought about that...

Aerodyne Precision CIJ - lots of noise no output
I suspect they would if they could - like the old joke about taxing the air we breathe if they could find a way. After all, isn't the so-called pasty-tax only being dropped because it's basically unworkable in practice?
I thought it was a mixture of two reasons: 1) Because there was a chance that an MP might eat one, accidentally or for a 'photo opportunity' (look at me with my tie off and my sleeves rolled up...) and have to pay that 'filthy tax stuff' like ordinary people. 2) Because they aren't expensive enough to make expenses forgery a worthwhile exercise.
The very fact that government has teams of people working on these sort of pie-in-the-sky schemes (pasty-in-the-sky?) tells it's own story.
The fact is that UK plc is an expensive place to run these days and income tax alone just isn't enough. Without seeing the problem, it sounds like a dry joint somewhere around the volume control to me. As the amp heats up the joint expands and a contact is broken - that'll give you the 'pop' and sudden volume loss. When it cools down, turning the volume control allows the dodgy contact to 'touch' again and the circuit is restored. Needs someone to go through all the joints around the volume control and track down wihich one is bad - although IME, it's often far easier (and quicker) to just de and resolder all the joints within an inch or two of the area affected.
Now that I do need to get involved in. I've just started learning about gardening this past couple of weeks. Mother nature's had it for the past 4 1/2 years & I'm slooooowwwwly taking it back. It was like the Amazon, now it's just a jungle. There's rhubarb in there, there's some weird exotic plants (probably weeds) & there's loads of my old favourite.... Brambles! I bought a strimmer & a lawnmower & now have something that resembles a patch of grass & I'm working on what could once maybe have been a vegetable garden!!! The neighbour has one of these "Bushcutter" things. It's like a petrol strimmer with a thick 3 pronged blade. He went into my jungle & broke it within 5 minutes! Oil peeing everywhere! I've been slowly working on a corner with large shears & heavy duty loppers (that can cut a 2" branch) & slowly working my way in. I can almost get to the 2nd shed!
You don't need the Gardening thread, you need a new one entitled 'Jungle Warfare' The gardening thread is possibly the longest running thread on BC without a cross word being spoken... a little vegetable oasis It's here BTW.

Personally, I think having left it for a 'few years' before chasing the return of the PA is going to mean you're not going to get anything back. Certainly not advocating walking away and letting yourself be used as a rug, but you're going to need to be realistic about your chances of compensation.
