I'm a big fan of Christy Moore (who usually has Declan Sinnott in tow) who was one of Planxty.
Absolutely. 'Ride On' was a massive album back in the 80's (?) and is one of those albums where there's not a single weak track.
For up tempo instrumentals you could also give Fairport a go too. Not Irish but some of their jigs are heading in that direction but in a more rock type setting
Oddly, I'm just back from a concert night where I guested as bass player on a rather nice version of Matty Groves.

Like English folk music, there are some distinct 'family trees'. Planxty, Christy Moore, Moving Hearts (check out the Dublin live gig recordings on you tube) DeDannan and Altan are vaguely connected and well worth a listen. The Bothy Band are particular favourites of mine and well worth checking out if you're after a more trad feel. The thing with 'Irish music' is not to be too picky about the actual locations - there are some fab Scottish folk bands and, as there's just a wee bit of water seperating Ireland from Scotland, there are a lot of points where the two musical cultures criss cross and become pretty much indistinguishable (unless you know the history of the song) from each other. And before anyone takes offence to that observation - it is meant as a compliment to both countries.

Techy question - Bass into laptop running youtube
icastle replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
I just use a little adaptor lead I made - 3.5mm stereo plug, ring and tip wired together (so bass comes out of both earpieces on the headphones) to a 1/4" inline jack socket. I can use it to play along with youtube or media player with no latency issues on my desktop PC. -
Hey, guess what? I went the full nine yards - and got the gig.
Well done mate.
-
Excellent Well done and you just saved yourself £20 as well.

Ah. The photo is 'supposed to be' a GK 700RB-II but I obviously didn't take it. myself . I've tweaked a couple of different GK's over the years and they've always had nicely marked jumpers to make things straightforward. I reckon you'll handle it just fine.
I'm left with a niggling sense that the band hasn't done that much to create a welcoming atmosphere.
That's as much to do with human nature as anything else I reckon. Take any established group of people, replace one of them and the dynamics of that group changes - doesn't matter if they're musicians or bird watchers. Each person in a group has their 'position' within the hierarchy to maintain and you're an 'unknown' that's going to change the 'pecking order'. You're initially going to be seen as a direct replacement for, and judged against, the previous bass player in more than just musical ability. There will be a period of turmoil as everyone gets the measure of you and how you fit in - you'll be going through the same thing with them. Eventually it all settles down and everything works smoothly again. You can't beat human nature, you just have to hold on tight and go with the flow mate.

It's dead easy to do Paul. 1) Make sure the amp is unplugged from the mains and undo the screws and take the lid off of the amp. 2) If you turn the amp so that the control knobs are facing you, on the LH side, near the back of the unit you will see the contents of this photo. 3) If you look just below the blue capacitors (in the top LH of the photo) you can see a little jumper block with 230V and 115V written on the board. This is the jumper. 4) The jumper in this photo is set for 115V and the pin against 230V is standing there uncovered. Now the technical bit: 5) Pull the jumper off and move it up one notch on the row of pins (so that the 230V pin is covered and the 115V pin is exposed). 6) Push the jumper back into that new position. 7) Put the lid back on.

Most godawful tuning you've been asked to play in
icastle replied to Nibody's topic in General Discussion
Sometimes I feel that some people view anything that isn't in standard tuning doesn't qualify as 'real music'. Playing in a lower than standard tuning doesn't necessarily make you a talentless, 'nu-metal musician', although there are certain bands that reside in that territory. Plenty of awful bands using standard tuning as well!
Yep, I can happily accept that, provided the converse is also accepted - using drop tuning doesn't automatically make it 'real music' or illustrate talent. -
holy crap! i tried an ibanez sr300 today...
I really like the weight and feel but I prefer the SR50X series with the bartolinis.
Yep. I'm using a 505 and just haven't seen, heard or played anything that I'd want to replace it with. If the SR300 is just half as good as an SR50X, then it's going to be an absolutely cracking instrument. I'm wanting to try an SR5005 to see if it really could be an improvement on the SR505. -
I see we have a lot in common!
I wondered where you were as soon as I read that... -
I'd get that job. I've got some lovely ties.
That is truly worrying...
-
It's not a good start between us, is it...
Nope. Arguing before you've even sat in the same room together isn't great. For this to even stand a chance of working, one side is going to have to take a deep breath and be the bigger man.
-
If everybody who's going to be in the room knows 7 of the songs, why waste the auditionee's time asking them to learn new ones? .
Conformity and a level playing field? If everyone else has been asked to learn the same tracks for the audition (which they undoubtedly have) there's absolutely no point in giving someone the option of playing something different and using that as a measure of ability against the other auditionees. It'd be like me going to an interview prepared to discuss vmware and discovering they were judging technical ability by tie colour...

Poor (or non existant) body cavity shielding?
-
They'll be learning new material as time goes on and they're going to want someone who's prepared to put the appropriate amount of effort in to make the exercise worthwhile. If you want to work with the band, now is not the time to be arguing over something you're going to be expected to do as a matter of course as a potential member.

Some people like them but I think it's safe to say that there's a fair bit of dislike of Line6 amplification products. Using your selection criteria and my experiences with Line6 amplification, I have to say that I'd reject Line6 on all counts.
-
OK, I'm confused now as the post above says that the line out is to link to another amp or mixer.
I think you're getting your terminology confused. A combo is an amp and speaker combined - you 'could' connect that to a line out socket and it'd work. You were talking about adding another speaker, a speaker is just a speaker and that won't work if you connect it to a line out socket.

Bass/vocal song ideas for Open Mic Night
icastle replied to Budgetneil's topic in General Discussion
I disagree. I play a 6 string and the high C enables me to play a chord accompaniment which is comparable to guitar, as well as play bass lines on the lower strings. I don't see the difference between this and a guitar/bass duo where the guitarist sings.
I've yet to hear a solo 6 string bass player make their instrument sound anything other than a bass guitar trying to do an impression of a 6 string guitar. FWIW the last time I saw a bassist trying to do that, the audience thinned out noticeably. Yes, he was good at what he was doing, but god it was dull to listen to and the audience voted with their feet. There's a big difference between playing what 'we' like and playing what an audience likes. -
Yes. That'll be a major factor in the distortion. Old fashioned Copydex glue will do the trick - it's very flexible, and being mostly liquid rubber, it creates a good airtight seal. I've used it on torn speakers and popped dust caps for years and the success rate has been quite high. Give it a go - as Dad3353 says, if it doesn't work you're looking at a recone anyway - so you've nothing to lose.
-
You can't just add an extra speaker cab to the line out socket on the back of an amplifier - it won't do anything. Your MB200 is capable of driving a 4Ω load, so if your 1x15 is an 8Ω cab you can add another 8Ω cab to you rig. If you're already running a 4Ω cab then you can't. To link two cabs together you need at least one of the cabs to have two Speakon sockets on it - you just daisychain them.
-
So, heres a question for you to answer I blew this at a free paid gig (my friends a music student and they needed a bassist) Should I be pursuing them for money if it costs me a few hundred quid to repair? There is one show left tomorrow night and i'm using a practise amp. I'm going to open up the amp and look at it tomorrow.
There's nothing they've done to have caused the damage. The 'reboot' could be thermally triggered but, given what you've said about the speaker socket, I'd be more inclined to suspect that the socket is causing a 'short' which is triggering the shutdown protection circuitry. This is all conjecture though, you need to get an amp tech to take a look at it.
-
I think a 4Ω & 8Ω load combined is 3.2Ω.
Closer It's actually 2.67Ω

Bass/vocal song ideas for Open Mic Night
icastle replied to Budgetneil's topic in General Discussion
I think it'd work if you're playing chords and high up the neck etc. I've arranged some songs for this where I can play the bass line as well as some accompaniment, and then sing on top (not that i'm good).
That'll work just fine if you're one of the bass 'demigods' with a loyal troupe of followers hanging on your every note and buying basses with their demigods name written on the headstock, but it'll really cut no ice in a bog standard plug and play setting.
