1.
Dood could probably manage
Dood could ditch 4 strings and still end up with more than the rest of us with those monsters he plays...
 2.
1. The various fives I bought were never as good, quality wise, as my fours. As a result I would always keep reverting to the fours.
That's something I've noticed over the years. It's not quite as bad now as it used to be, but I always felt that the 5 versions of many of the existing 4's were a bit makeshift and had a bit of a 'make the neck a bit wider and slap an extra machine head on it' sort of ethos...
 3.
Ditch 4 strings? But then that would leave you with only 1 string. What's the use of that?
You could run around the woods wearing tights and rob from the rich to give to the poor...
 4.
Its entirely measurable wjether or not it works, and where though. Someone can download some free acoustic measuring software, a=do a couple of frequency sweeps, with and without and compare the results. Do it in a few known rooms/stages.
Has it not occured to anyone that if this didn't work then Auralex wouldn't sell it? They've got a 30 year pedigree in acoustic management and you've only got to look at their customer list to see they'd have a lot to lose if they tried selling snake oil... Gramma pads are peanuts when compared to their main business.
 5. I have 4's, 5's and a 6. Although they all have their 'place', I always grab a 5 as a 'default' instrument. If I had to choose one single type to retain then it'd be a 5.
 6.
Thankfully I couldnt find any full length shots.
This probably isn't the right forum to be showing your full length on anyway...
 7.
I've ordered one from Dolphin. £42 all in, got to be worth a try at that price.
Interestingly, I've not seen anyone who's ordered one (or built one) come back and say it's sh*te...
 8.
' timestamp='1334541499' post='1617426'] Before performing, I give my 9v battery's a little lick if there getting on a bit, just to check if they still have enough zing in em!
...which on an alkaline battery means nothing at all as their discharge characteristics are totally different from the manganese oxide batteries that this somewhat hit and miss test was used on... Best bet is to change them regularly and always carry a spare - I write the date that the battery was last changed on the spare as a prompt.
 9.
I don't see the problem with people posting questions to others on a bass forum that satisfies their curiosity concerning two different kinds of bass guitars, especially since the OP has described himself as a newer player and many of us here are experienced with gear and such. If you don't like the topic, I would have thought it easier to simply not reply?
+1 Not forgetting of course, that things change. If this forum had been around 20 years ago then we'd all have laughed if someone asked if it was possible to have a 300W 2x10" bass cab or a 1000W bass amp... One of the many things that makes this forum a truly valuable resource is the up to date detail it contains and it's from revisiting topics to see if things have changed, and to pick up new detail that we hadn't considered relevant the first time around that feeds that value.
 10. In theory it should make no difference as the nut itself should be at one end of the vibrating portion of the string (the bridge saddles being the other end obviously) and prevent any vibration from passing back to the machine heads. I have noticed that some string brands seem to have a shorter 'tail' on some of my basses and I soon work out which ones to avoid using on particular instruments. I stick to Elixir's or Rotosounds on everything nowadays.
 11. I'd say go in at around £250 - there's as much work involved in setting up for 2x 45 min sets as there is setting up for 3x 1.5 hour sets. IME if you set your price too low you won't get quality bookings.
 12.
+1 to all the above.

You've a rats chance in hell of being able to hear an acoustic bass without amplification.

If you amplify it then it's going to be a compromise between tone and feedback.

A good 70% of my musical work is around 'acoustic' sets and I either use a standard electric bass or an NS EUB (which never fails to interest the audience).

Acoustic basses are good for quiet noodling at home and look the part in videos, but that's about it IME.
13.
Don't be put off by John Mayer at the beginning of this video, he doesn't stay around for long.
14.
You can't leave it like that! What've ya got man?
SR505
 15.
You have a hollow neck to get through Customs ???
I never have a problem with Customs. I just explain about morris dancing and it's fertility symbolism and they just tend to wave me through very quickly...
 16.
If this ends up as bad as that these are screwed :-P I guess I'd have a job making it worse lol
Exactly It's actually easier than repairing a bicycle puncture... ...just you wait until I do my expose on how to make a roadworn bass using sticky back plastic, a pair of Val's old knickers, three toilet roll tubes and a chainsaw...
 17.
...especially when you discover that B/W/RW suits you, and the config that really nails the 'authentic' tone you were after is best described as 'stock'.
I have fond memories of a guitarist in an old band trying to decide between a Marshall amp and a Line6 modelling amp. After weeks of driving the rest of us crazy talking about it, he turned up with a Line6. He started running through the various preset tones... "No, No, No, Definately No, Closer..., WTF is that one supposed to be?, No, No..." "Yes! That one!" "What's that one there?" "Marshall"......
 18.
OK well, potential improvement then
SOLD!!!
 19.
Thanks icastle, I'm not particularly handy though.
You don't need an entire handy, just a couple of fingerys... Did you make models using torn up newspaper and wallpaper paste at school? This is exactly the same thing
 20.
These are an inexpensive way to improve your bass's electronics: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1e5d053f9e
Assuming of course that these components are better than what is already in there... the component parts in the kit are pretty much bog standard. Changing like for like does not constitute an upgrade.
 21.
What's a Blade?
Blade are a small production run outfit who mostly make Fender copies. Their strats are nice but I've not tried a bass yet.
I dunno, I've had my Thumb bass for... 7 years now I think? It's not perfect but I've been happy with it for a long time. Most people here seem to keep basses for about six months, but gush shamelessly about their qualities for the whole of those six months, and also in the For Sale ads they post in month seven.
I think that rather depends on the length of time the individual has been playing for. The older players have got their 'experimenting' and 'quest for that killer tone' thing out of their systems and have settled down to concentrate on actually playing. We've probably all been there at some point.
 22. That's not too bad. Copydex and some white tissue paper torn* to the right sort of size to make a patch will sort that out. Two layers front and rear. Don't be tempted to use PVA or EvoStick though - they set harder than Copydex and that inflexibility will potentially cause another tear. *If you cut the tissue paper then you end up with a straight edged patch which shows up - tear the paper and the randomness helps it blend in.
 23.
Taxi for Dad3353
Sounds like a fair swap under the circumstances...
 24. The neck. Built for speed and sin.
 25.
Nah, Precision every time! The Jazz is far too complicated, what with all those knobs and pickups and all!
It has one extra knob you knob.
