i built a couple of cheap bitsa basses for pub gigging and never used them, always going back to my 77 p-bass, both the bitsa's were sold a couple of months ago when my Letts 5 string arrived, i have the rockbass corvette 5 as my backup but the Letts is the one that i'll play 99% of the time (the p-bass will come out for certain gigs even though it weighs the same as the moon) pretty much everything i own is to be used and when it comes to the watches analogy i actualy bought myself a 1950's Longines automatic a couple of weeks ago and have been wearing it pretty much every waking hour since! I bought it to tell the time, any investment potential it might have is secondary. i have insurance for pretty much everything i own, if something gets lost/Broken/stolen then i'll be sad right up to the point that the insurance money arrives and i can go out to buy some other shiny toy to keep me amused. i played a pub gig on Saturday with my Markbass F1 and both of my Midgets, Had to reign in the power a bit but it sounded Fab, i could have easily got away with just one Midget really (but they look so good stacked up) a single compact would have also been excellent (i went for the twin midget setup as it fitted on a shelf in the spare room thereby getting purchase approval from my wife, the shelf wasn't big enough for a comapct and a midget and a super 12T would have been marginally more difficult to get up the stairs as there's a 180 degree turn half way up) i got loads of complinments on my tone from the punters including a friend who is very truthful and who's opinion i trust fully. i've always been very happy with the Picato strings that i've had, i believe that the flatwound Overwater strings are made by Picato, I bought the 5 string set from them (as they were cheaper than the picato) and they were identical in feel, looks and sound, the only difference was that the Overwater ones came in a nice black box and the Picato came in a plastic pouch. If they're good enough for overwater.... Matt

Howard is the man for this, the guy in them little shop you describe is Brian, an excellent guitar tech but often quite busy with setups, I've bought a fair few guitars and a bass or two from him over the years and he's always been top notch (he's even made me the occasional cup of tea while I'm browsing) you might even find Howard in there on the occasional afternoon. that's a smart looking cab, for next time you could see if you can find the combined 1/4" - speakon sockets, there a little bit more expensive than the standard speakons but should be cheaper than separate speakon and 1/4" sockets. Matt

the case for my '77 went awol many years ago i guess (if it ever had one?) i just haggled for a Hiscox case when i did the deal, I've got 8 Hiscox cases now, 3 of them bass ones, i always travel by car or van so the Hiscox is my top choice, i don't actually have a gigbag in the collection, although i will have one later this week when i take possession of a telecaster that a friend is selling me, (but i actually bought a Hiscox case for it last night at the bargain price of 30 quid!) i'll probably sell the gigbag off if it's a fancy one or give it away to a mate if it's not. if i was buying a new bass that was over say 700 quid then I'd be wanting a hard case for it, if it didn't have a hard case supplied then i'd want a good deal on a Hiscox (which is exactly what i got with my Letts) when it comes to used basses then i'd expect that if a case was supplied from new then i'd want it, for me the presence of an original hard case can show that the bass was looked after (i have a 1981 aria cardinal that has an original case and the guarantee card!)

there is a group on facebook for those type of instruments, should be able to find it with a search, failing that you could contact Mr Foxen and see if he knows anyone who might want it (he's acting as a dealer/middleman for this type of instruments) just out of idle curiosity, what colour is this bass? if you do make the trade then i might be interested in the tele. but i have to agree that the apx acoustics can sound a bit thin, i looked at a new apx4 many years ago and ended up going for a yamaha dw105c instead as it had a bigger richer unplugged tone (cutaway dreadnaught acoustic.) Matt

i think the op means that he's got 2 of 1x10 cabs, each one 16 ohms, is there any space on the plate that the jack socket is fitted to? it's very easy to drill another hole and add a parallel socket, that would allow you to connect in the other cab 10 minutes work if you've got a drill and a soldering iron.

i'm just going to echo 6v6 here, i've got a small antex soldering iron and it's a great bit of kit, you can get them as a little set with the stand which is definately worth it (it will have a bit of sponge which you make slightly damp then use to clean the tip. i've had my antex iron for about 15 years so far and i think my brothers one must be heading for it's 20th birthday, they do last very well and aren't exactly expensive. the switchcraft jack sockets are excellent as well

it's typical isn't it, no sooner do i get my money together and buy myself a pair of Barefaced midgets (the last cabs that i'm ever likely to have permission to buy) then Alex re-invents thew whole cab market and launches an even more impressive range. it's sod's law at work! i must say though that i'm incredibly impressed with the midget stack that i've got and a quick look at the specs of the new super cabs shows me that while the new cabs will probably be even more impressive, they won't fit on the shelf that i have been allocated for bass cab storage so i wouldn't be able to buy the new ones anyway! i haven't got round to trying flats on it yet but it was commented that the low b on my Letts was fantastic, maybe Jon just knows how to get a 34" scale low B to work! (i'm currently using DR Fatbeams) Matt

the best way to get a scratchplate is to ask the Bass Doc, he's got templates for pretty much every shape you could ever want and he'll make new ones to fit if there isn't one in his collection. best of all he can do almost any variation of colours and the price will be less than the Fender ones (but the quality is actually better!) Send him a PM and he'll sort you out with whatever you need. Matt

i'm usually a fan of matching headstocks but the one in the picture doesn't really match (too dark round the edges) so it's natural for me.

i've got one of the older 5 string rockbass corvettes and it's a nice bass, very light and plays very well, but i only paid 120 quid for it so i'd definately echo the guys who posted before me, get a secondhand german one, you have enough money to be able to pick and choose a little but the one that was posted by Gregbass looks ,ike the one to go for, it's very similar to the one in the OP but german. ignore the wear as it's not that bad and i'd imagine that worse can happen on tour! I actually gave the same advice to a friend a while ago and they ignored it and bought a new rockbass without ever having played one, they didn't get on with it (not really suited to the music they were paying) and it was advertised for sale at about a month old and 150 quid less than it had been bought for! (he then decided to keep it as he didn't want to take the financial hit) Matt

i'd go with finding a jazz that you like the look and feel of then converting it to a p/j, contact the bass doc (member on here) and ask about the mods, he will be able to sort you a direct replacement for the scratchplate with the correct cutout for the precision pickup, he might be able to supply a pickup from his stash as well, Depending what the body is like you might not need to rout it out to get the new pickup to fit, if it does need wood cut out then the bass doc could do that too, i know that he converted a 5 string jazz to a 5 string p/j so a 4 should be no problem. your biggest problem is deciding which jazz you want! but buying from the basschat marketplace would be my recommendation.
