1. Zero Bass GAS ? What's a Zero Bass ? I have to have one !
2.
That's alright then, I'll calm myself down! (*Mumbles to himself*... "still don't know why Sara Lee wasn't mentioned... bloody lists for this and that and the other etc etc and no Sara Lee...")
I do agree with you, I think that she's a greater influence bass-wise than Kim Gordon for example...who has made a much greater contribution in general as a singer and lyricist for SY than as a bassist...IMHO.
3.
It's a fair point but it's hugely inhibiting (and widely open to debate) when it's referenced as 'shaping' music. If they're trying to promote positive reaction to female players then surely reference players who have 'inspired' - with a little artistic licence you could legitimately name any/every female who has ever been near a bass guitar and say that someone has been influenced by them. So, Annie Holland from Elastica would get a mention, ditto Tessa Pollitt from The Slits and Este Haim from Haim and Tracy Wormworth, along with Gail Anne Dorsey and Gaye Advert (both mentioned above) and countless others. And if they are going to reference someone shaping modern music (which is an incredibly difficult thing to quantify) then why leave out Sara Lee and her work with Gang of Four; a band that hugely influenced Flea and RHCP as just one example?
It's just one person's opinion, I don't think the article is trying to be a definitive summation of the state of the art !
4. Niiiiiice
5. The graphics are brilliant, looks like a Durex ad.
6.
That is looking great
Thanks ! I was hoping to take some photos outside but it's not snap-happy weather, so here's something from inside The squier neck is lovely to play. Those CV basses really are astoundingly good value. I've put a link to the Flickr album with the full-size pictures in my signature.
7.
....I just stop playing altogether and listen to the bottom fall out of the song, then kick into the groove again with a smug smile I hate soloing!!!!
That's an awesome idea !
8. Very cool, like the duct tape finish
9.
Those go on forever, I've got a 17w one ('cos I'm so delicate ) that I must have had for a similar amount of time.
I only had to replace mine as I rolled a chair over it.
10. No, but I jammed with a drunk wasp once.
11.
It seems to me the problem is not being in a band, once established skill and experience will shine through, it is getting into a band when one is older - especially if there is no network of musicians and live music on one's doorstep.
That's very much the case.
12. Any volatile solvent works....a generous spray of switch cleaner and a clean cloth is superb for cleaning shiny surfaces.
13. Gotta be time for this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbXz3MXx2DU
14.
Nice! Well done
Thanks !
15.
As with all things, there's the law of diminishing returns. a £1000 bass will be LOADS better than a £200 bass, but a £2000 will be noticably better than a £1000 bass. A bad setup can kill any bass stone dead, no matter what it is, but everyone's threshold is different. Some people might not appreciate the difference between, say, a MIM Fender P and a custom shop one, and others wouldn't touch anything less than that and consider that their bottom rung. Complex question with not a single, simple answer.
Well put - if you've got £10,000 pounds to spend on a bass then why buy the £1000 one ? You get the £2000 one. The question's complex indeed - it very much depends on how much you think things are worth and that's very subjective.
16. My advice is to keep plugging away with JMB, Gumtree, etc and get an ad up yourself. I'm 46 and I play with a few 20-somethings in a folk band and I'm the oldest in my other band, but not by much. Both I found through Gumtree, but after a lot of looking, replying and waiting. I've found that the people who aren't bothered about age make much better bandmates the "hats worn at just he right angle" (well-put CamdenRob) brigade. Good luck !
17. Lovely spring day here in Lahndon, perfect for some pictures I'm very happy with the way it's turned out, lovely feel to the wood and it looks very cool indeed. Few more bits to get, and some nice pickups as well - I think it deserves a bit more than the squier one that's in there.
18.
Do you want a chrome Jazz bass VVT control plate? I think I've got one.
That would be great, thanks
19. OK, bit of a teaser here. Bought some Colron Beeswax today and get two nice even coats on and buffed off this afternoon. Was thinking of another coat, but didn't want it to go too dark.....so I popped the neck on, just to see how it looked...and then the bridge as well. It's actually assembled now with a pickup and scratchplate, but I'm going to wait until tomorrow to get some decent pictures of it. In the meantime, here's an action shot of me fitting the bridge. The copper earthing strip is a piece of shielding tape, folded over a few times. It looks lovely - I'm very pleased.
20. I've seen similar designs but not this particular semi.....my first concern is that it looks like a neck-diver, how will that square with your shoulder problems ?
21.
I think that's the concern. I genuinely thought I was making an effort last night. Leg/foot tapping away, smiling and laughing occasionally when the other band members looked over, singing along (when I could). I'll keep working on it.
I think that's all it needs, just so you look like you're actually there and taking part. You don't have to jump around and go mad. Be a slightly more rock and roll version of yourself, that's what I do.
22.
I'm a bit freaked out as to why he picked me out as he didn't grab anyone else. I really should have spoken to him afterwards but I was a bit angry and thought it might have ended badly
That was very wise, good for you. It's incredible behaviour. I know it happens, but.....well....it's beyond me.
23. Considering the amount of bass schlepping I do either on public transport or on a bike, I've often wondered about something like this Hohner. I'm not sure it would fit live with the folk band I play with (!), but for practice it would literally be a weight off my back.
24. Then I'll come down and see the both of you, which would be a treat judging by the music I've heard so far.
