I have to agree about the headstock looking awful. In addition I don't like the tuners, neck, pickups, NASA electronics, body shape, colour or contour. Nice case though.

Don't know if this is of use to anyone, but I've currently got an Ampeg Pre into an Ampeg power amp, rack-mounted on top of each other. I was getting a lot of hum, but all of the cabling was solid, and the mains supplies were all on the same ring, valves replaced just in case they'd gone microphonic etc.... Turns out that having the amps so close to each other was enabling the two magnetic fields of the transformers to 'interfere' with each other to the point where my bass playing would come through the power amp even with the preamp turned down. a sheet of aluminium placed between the two has eliminated all of the noise. Simples. Also, egg boxes make perfect holders for golf balls, except that they're slightly too small.

Hmm, first ones that spring to mind are "London Calling" from the Clash, and a live version of "Zoot allures" with (I think) Scott Thunes, can't remember which Zappa album though, really meaty tone and solid playing all the way. Edit: It's on "Does humour belong in music?"

The EBS chorus has a pretty good Pulse modulation mode that gets pretty close. I had a Stereo Pulsar a while back, I remember thinking it was a lovely pedal. Upgraded to an EBS one later, but for the money it was superb.

Another vote for "driven" here. Great line, especially the version on the "Different Stages" live album.

I remember when this were all fields... That's actually a damned lie. Things do seem a little quiet of late though. Maybe I'll post some 'drummer at the wrong gig' threads to get things going.

Might need to move the pups though, that's one DEEP / MID sounding bass there. Probably best not played through an Ampeg, unless you want the world to implode.

HiFi buffs I know swear by Grado GR60s (if memory serves), but I've got a pair of fairly cheap sennheisers that do me. It's only for practicing, not monitoring/mixing.

Avoid consecutive 5ths! Samuel Adler and Rimsky Korsakov both published really useful books on Orchestral arranging. They're both from a classical perspective, but give a thorough exploration of what each instrument and section is good at, and not good at. also they are great references for which clef etc... to use when scoring parts. Hope this is of some use.

Have you tried turning the DB through 90 degrees, slimming down the body, shortening the neck and fitting a pickup between the bridge and the neck joint? Works every time for me.

You could do a whole lot worse than a Dave Hall DI/EQ. They can be phantom powered from the desk and will allow you to EQ the DI out and the feed to your amp independently. I love mine. It's always with me on any gig just in case. http://www.davehallamps.co.uk/page42.html

I've been in the reverse situation. I'm wholeheartedly a finger player, though I was once doing a studio job and I suggested that I use a pick for one particular track, which was very much frowned upon. I won in the end, and everyone agreed that it DID sound better within the context of the track. Bit of a moral victory, as I had cramps in my thumb for hours afterwards. Hey Ho. As bassists we're there to serve the track. That's it.
