  4. just be honest with yourself and evaluate what you can do on a regular basis - or better still, get a good teacher who can do that and then advise the best way to move forward. I've been playing for 19 years, and have progressed a fair way, but I'm STILL trying to develop my playing, but focussing on note choice instead of techniques, because 99% of the time that's far more important than double-thumbing / slapping etc... Sure, it's nice to have the chops, but you'll need to be a solid player first. I know that I was a rubbish player when I started, but I'd played keyboards for a while so I knew bits about chord theory and scales, which helped, but I had to work an awful long time to develop my groove playing. It's payed dividends though - I've never failed to get a gig after an audition, and have had some really well-paid gigs off the back of it. Just take it one step at a time (and get a metronome).

    Best Octaver?

    OC2 is the daddy of octavers. I've moved to an aguilar as it plays better with my active bass, but the sound of the OC2 is sublime (pun intended)
  6. I've tried alice strings - they were OK, but nothing special. For the money they were just what I wanted (stick them on to record some slap parts, then back to the flats). I wish my strings were cheap, they're currently working out at a tenner a string.
  7. I've found that get a halfway decent distorted/overdriven/fuzz bass sound you've [i]got[/i] to have an amp and speakers (or simulator) in the chain to 'flatter' the sound. Of course, sounding 'good' is massively subjective. I can see the rationale behind the OP, but to push the idea to the nth degree, we should all be playing uprights, eating our food raw, and sleeping in trees.

[/quote] +1, Dt100s (and DT150s) are absolutely bombproof, but not massively detailed. For mixing etc... I'd go for a pair of Grado GR80s. Lovely, clear, balanced cans. IIRC they were voted 'best headphones' a few years on the trot by What hiFi magazine (or similar).
  9. all the pedals you've mentioned in the OP are super crazy, way-over-the-top units. I'm guessing that you don't want to sound like a jam jar full of wasps through a high pass filter? as Loz has already suggested, the VT1 is a great choice, particularly in front of a valve amp. Other units that are great for bass that don't rob too much of the lows are things like the MXR M80 (the blend control is your best friend here) or quite a lot of people swear by the Boss ODB3 and the James Lomenzo Hyperdrive by Ashdown. I'd have kept mine if I had room for it on the board. Bass Big Muffs are always welcome too. Ideally do you have a particular band / sound in mind, or maybe some links to youpube videos?

Either a) distortion pedal (the Dave Hall VT1, Ashdown distortion plus etc... would be favourite, or a bass tube screamer is designed to push valves into 'breaking up') some sort of boost pedal to make the valves sweat a bit harder c) or you could sell it and get an Ampeg! OR d) turn the gain up and master volume down.
