1. Hi. I realise you are wanting to move this cab on but if you really wanted to keep it, I have a pair of Peavey Black Widow 1505 KADT- 8ohm speakers I have just removed from my PA bass bins. The only reason for changing them was to put in 4-ohm speakers to match the Hisys tops. I've included a link from youtube showing the same speaker, not mine, but the same. £80 the pair, posted. No offence if you wish to pass on this. Cheers, Beely http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMNln_ncWFE
2. Hi woodyratm. I have a Barefaced Super 12 without a tweeter. I play a 4001 through an SVT4 Pro. I can't say I found any lack of top end, but these things can be quite subjective. I'm about an hour or so's drive from you. If you want to try it out then I'm sure we could arrange something. Cheers.
3. I put one of these on my 4001 a couple of years ago. Have to agree, it is superb, much better than the original. I was having problems getting the intonation correct. The new bridge sorted that out. It is now so easy to set the action/intonation/string spacing. Can't recommend this highly enough.
4.
You'll have to decide but on a Ricky I'd probably try the light gauge: 45-65-80-100
These are the strings I use on my 4001. Can't fault them really.
5. I have a pair of AER AS281s I use as stage monitors. They are so good it's almost selfish to keep such a quality sound on stage. Originally bought to play acoustic guitar/vocals through, these speakers are without doubt the best I have ever used. I understand your utter delight.
6. How about a W-Audio Horizon series? Several models to choose from, 300w up to 1300w and not too expensive. Flexible too. Three different modes; stereo, parallel and bridge. The 600w version weighs in at 8Kg. Not sure if that would be light enough for you. All models are 1U. The only restriction I have found is you can't run in bridge mode at less than 8 ohms.
7. I'm amazed that you have had no replies to this. I would have thought there were plenty of guys who would jump at an opportunity like this. I am in the exact opposite position to you, a bass player looking for just such a band. Shame I'm several hundred miles away. Best of luck in your search. Just had a thought:maybe you've had lots of phone calls.
8. You could also try Blacka Acoustics. http://www.blackaacoustics.co.uk Perhaps a wee bit more expensive than other manufacturers but you will get a quality case that will be made specifically with your amp in mind with regard for ventilation, access etc.
9.
After a bit of googling, from what I can see is the neck issues are to do with adjusting truss rods. 4001 rods don't function like a usual truss rod. Where the rod moves the neck in a usual truss rod. If you try to adjust a 4001 neck like this you're likely to make the fretboard pop off. I think i'll take the plunge and buy the one I have seen.
The original strings on my 4001 were flat-wound and I seem to recall they were quite light although I can't remember the exact gauge. At one point I changed them for wire-wounds of a heavier gauge and hated them. The guitar didn't like them much either. That doesn't mean yours won't be ok though. Make sure that when/if you adjust the truss rods the guitar has the strings tuned to pitch. Having said that, it's really a job for someone who knows what they are doing. (I went to watch mine being done once and had to leave the room.) Check out Joey's Bass Notes. http://www.joeysbassnotes.com/default.htm You'll probably find out most of what you need to know there. Like you my 4001 has a significant date of manufacture, made the month and year I got married, February 1978.
10. I have the same thing with my SVT 4 Pro. No problem with taking the feet off, they are just screwed into holes in the casing. You might want to check the rear panel for holes that will take the feet. That way you are less likely to lose them. It just depends on the space you have in your rack lids.

I found out about Dave here on Basschat. Everyone who has dealt with him has raved about the quality of the cables and, probably as important, the customer service. Definitely got the impression he wouldn't sell you something unsuitable just for the sake of a sale. It's really good feeling to have your expectations exceeded. I ordered and paid for four cables an Thursday and they arrived, superbly packaged, the next day. These cables are extremely rugged and look like they would take a fair bit of abuse and still work. (When I opened the box I thought someone had slipped in a length of garden hose by mistake, such is the thickness of these cables) Any time in the future when I need a cable I will know where to go. Cheers, Beely
12. Hi Garry. How "ish" is 250 ish? I'm near Perth and could come and collect. Cheers for now, Beely
13.
I have the Red5s, and I like them, but the clips are sh*t. They've all fallen apart now. You need patience and a tiny screwdriver to put them back together. I'm using them for recording so I can just attach them to boom stands, but for live I don't think they'd last.
Had to smile when I read this about the clips. I too have tried (and mostly failed) to re-assemble one. I just put them on stands as well.
14. Agree with Red5 Audio. I have a set I use for recording. The condenser mics for overheads are particularly good. One advantage of these condenser mics is the fact they have an internal battery so you don't necessarily need phantom power. Great value for money. (Just did a quick price check, £153)
15. This advice may be slightly after-the-event but I can certainly recommend the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. I migrated from a Fostex VF160 to computer after recording in a pro studio and seeing Pro Tools in action. I use an iMac with Logic and, like you, did extensive research into which DAW would suit me best. I did go throught a head-scratching phase, mostly concerning terminology and routing of signals, but even my 55-year-old brain got to grips with it. The knowledge-base on the Focusrite website is extremely useful. I was having a problem with getting a signal through the headphones and phoned up the helpline. A very kind soul led me by the hand through the process and I discovered that it wasn’t so difficult after all. (This became a recurring theme.) The Saffire Mix Control is, once again, really easy to use once you “get it” if you see what I mean. I found the facility to have individual headphone mixes for each artist to be a real godsend. Once I got past being slightly overwhelmed by what could be done with this I found that, as with most technical things in life, you end up using only what you actually need. You always add bits of knowledge on as you go. I hope this doesn’t sound like I’m being a cheerleader for Focusrite. I’m just really happy with my Pro 40 and what I can achieve with it.
16. Hi. This is my current bass set-up:- Ampeg SVT 4Pro Barefaced Bass Super 12. Rickenbacker 4001. I’m not unhappy with the sound I am getting but I’d like to try using the Ric-o-sound. Is it possible to use the two individual amps in the SVT 4Pro to separate the pick-ups for stereo use? Obviously I would have to add another cab, possibly a Barefaced Compact (dreaming). I have a stereo splitter, ie one stereo in, two mono out. Could I use a preamp, such as the SVP-Pro, as one mono input and the main input on the SVT 4Pro as the other mono input? Would I be able to direct each mono signal to a separate amp and then on to each separate speaker? I’m not sure if I’ve explained this particularly well, though I think any of you who play Rickenbackers will understand what I’m looking for. I suppose it might be easier to buy another amp but that means more weight, more expense, more hassle etc. The 4Pro has more than enough power for me. Seems a shame to not use it. I did use the Ric-o-sound years ago through one amp and cab. It was a Selmer Treble n’ Bass 100 that had two inputs. (One treble and one bass, surprisingly enough) Even through one cab it still sounded better than straight mono. As I said, I’m happy enough with the sound I am getting. (Actually that’s not quite true as my amp is slightly unwell at the moment as in, not working at all.) I’m mostly just curious to find out if this one-amp Ric-o-sound set-up is possible. Thanks in advance for any help.
17. Hi xgsjx. Nice to hear from another Perth bassist. I'm a Hillyland boy myself. I spoke to Pete Caban in Bandwagon a wee while back when I heard his band were looking for a bass player. I think the spot had already been filled though. I had heard there was a shortage of bass players in Dundee as well. Pretty sure I'll get something soon. Cheers.
18. Hi there. I’ve been visiting here for a while without actually contributing anything. I thought it would be good manners to introduce myself. I’m what you might describe as a “return-ee” to bass playing. I started playing bass in the 70’s. It was an “in-at-the-deep-end” experience. I was playing guitar at the time when, three days before a gig, the bass player left the band. The rest, as they say… I’m now in my fifties and for the last twenty years or so, apart from some depping work and a bit of recording for my own solo projects, I’ve hardly done any bass playing at all. Now I have the opportunity to get back playing bass in a band again. I had been thinking about it for a while but due to work commitments could never quite make it happen. Redundancy sorted that out. (It’s never all bad) I play a Rickenbacker 4001 which I’ve had from new. (I almost sold it at one point because I hardly ever used it but my friend threatened me with actual bodily harm if I was stupid enough get rid of it. A true friend indeed.) Turns out it was made in February 1978, the same month and year I got married. Both relationships survive and prosper. I bought an Ampeg SVT4 Pro and, thanks to the good influence of BC’ers, I’ve recently taken delivery of a Barefaced Bass Super 12. This combination of amp and cab have shown up a few weaknesses in my guitar’s set-up that I had never really noticed before. It’s also shown up more than a few weaknesses in my playing technique. I’m working on them both. I’ll post a pic in the gear porn thread at some point. Anyway, I think that’s wordy enough for a first post. Now, all I need is a band…
