1. Just to let any BC'ers in or around Perth know that my band, The Engine House, are playing The Twa Tams this coming Friday 1st May. If any of you make it along, please say hello. I'll be the one with either the white Mustang or the burgundy Ric. Not yet sure which it will be. Decisions, decisions...........
2. Here is another link to therecordingrevolution.com. http://therecordingrevolution.com/2011/01/10/the-glyn-johns-drum-recording-method/ I can guarantee this works. Easy to set up too. If you do want to buy a set of drum mics then I can recommend the Red5Audio ones.
3. I bought a B-stock Samson L1200 mixer from them. Great reduction in price and I can't see a thing wrong with it. No marks anywhere and works perfectly.
4. I think Truckstop and wateroftyne have pretty well nailed it. Every band should have a "leader", for want of a better term. In my band, that's me, but only to the extent of organising rehearsals and all the 101 crappy but necessary things you have to do. The rest of the band just have to learn their stuff, turn up and play. Musically we are all pretty much of the same mind so there is no real friction there.
5. My band had a new drummer join us about six weeks ago. Decent guy, fits in well with the rest of the band and is as good a drummer as the rest of us are on our own instruments. I was a bit concerned at the first couple of rehearsals that he seemed to slow down quite a bit as a song progressed. Seems he hadn't played for some years and it was just a case of being unfit. Its no longer a problem as he has obviously been practicing and getting back in to shape. I know that's not the point of the OP, which is more about drummers who will probably never be able to keep time, but it may be relevant in some cases as a lot of drummers never seem to practice between rehearsals or gigs. I can play drums a wee bit, nothing fancy you understand, and I know it can be quite physically demanding. Perhaps the OP's drummer situation is partly down to fitness. Or maybe not..........
6. I've used an EBS Reidmar and an SVT4 Pro through my S12. The Ampeg slightly shades it for tonal variety but the EBS skates it for portability. Can't fault either amp for quickly and easily getting the sound I want. Incidentally, as an experiment once, I used the S12 as an extension cabinet for my Peavey Basic 12 practice combo. Pleasantly surprised at how good that sounded.
7. I was at an Indigo Girls gig in The Queens Hall in Edinburgh many years ago. Amy Ray started a very strident, upbeat intro to a song on her mandolin. She stepped up to the mic to sing and…….nothing. She closed her eyes, screwed up her face and stood quite still and silent, like she was waiting for inspiration. You could just imagine the expletives running around her head. Emily Saliers leaned across and whispered something in her ear. Amy opened her eyes, turned imperceptibly towards her, smiled and nodded. She started again, this time with no problem, finished the song and then had a good laugh about it. Just goes to show it happens to even the best. I think anyone who sings in public has had the same experience at one time or other. What usually happens, to me anyway, when you can’t remember the first line of a song, is your mind is a complete blank until about three milli-seconds before you start to sing then the lyric pops into your head. Well, mostly it does.
8.
I posted something the other week, on a Friday. I was paying extra for special delivery just so it was both insured, tracked and signed for. The girl in the post office said not to bother paying the (considerable) extra for Saturday delivery, because it almost certainly wouldn't be delivered anyway
The girl in your local Post Office is wrong about that. Saturday Special Deliveries can have sticker placed on them, yellow with the letters SG (Saturday Guarantee) in black, to ensure they are delivered or at least delivery is attempted.
9. Just returned from a holiday in the USA to visit a musician friend. She does lots of what can only be described as "campfire" gigs when children are at summer camps. She has just purchased one of these to help out on the bigger gigs as she was beginning to strain her voice. http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/portable-pa/expedition-rechargable/ Input for guitar and voice. For the little I heard it, it sounded pretty decent.
10. I was working on a diagram to post but you have it covered perfectly. I based the choice of amp on the (incorrect) assumption I would be running at 8 ohms. Given the recent update to my knowledge, I realise that is not the case so I will indeed need to take great care with the volume settings. The bass speakers are actually 500w Eminence speakers, can't remember the model, but they are a replacement for the original Black Widows which were 8 ohm, 250w. I changed them so they would be the same impedance as the tops. If I had changed the speakers in the tops to 8 ohms to match the bass bins, then we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. Cheers for now, Beely
11. Hi. Once again, thanks for the helpful advice. I had a bit of a sleepless night over this. I'm glad I read your replies before I left for work this morning. They put a bit of a spring into this Postie's step. Monckyman: One of the reasons I was attracted to this amp was indeed the versatility. The variety of input/output options will be very useful I'm sure. Cheers for now, Beely
12. Hi guys. Thanks for the replies. Basschat is such an education. The bass bins are Peavey Mega Subs which do have a built-in crossover. There are four jack sockets on the back, two are marked "Full range". I would presume these are wired in parallel. The other two sockets are marked "Bi-amp Lo" and "Hi out" These will be the ones connected through the crossover I suppose. The plate on the back is extremely worn so I'm afraid I can't supply any other relevant info. Thanks again.
13. Hi. If I daisy-chain a 4 ohm bass bin to a 4ohm top ie, amp output in to bass bin, out of bass bin in to top, is this wired in series or parallel? My feeling is they are wired in series, thereby creating an 8 ohm load. One of these connected to each of two channel outputs on the amp, wires them in parallel, thereby reducing the load to a still-acceptable 4 ohms. The reason I ask is we have just bought a new amp to power our PA. It's a QSC GX7. The manual is a bit ambiguous regarding speaker connections or at least it is to me. I contacted QSC to ask for advice and the tech guy who got back to me said it was unlikely that they were wired in series, more likely parallel. This would create a 2ohm load which is not so good. It might be the case I didn't explain the set-up very well to him and this was why he reached this conclusion. I will get back in touch with him, but I thought I would give Basschat the opportunity to share its collective wisdom. Cheers for any help or advice. Beely
14. Hi. My band is changing our PA to powered speakers so, consequently I have for sale this Samson TXM20 Powered Mixer. 500 watts per side stereo, 1000 watts bridged mono. Cosmetically and functionally perfect, this is an extremely versatile and reliable mixer. (I liked this mixer so much its replacement is also a Samson, the L1200.) I've included the link below to give you any information you may need. http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/powered-mixers/txm/txm20/ Included in the sale is a Roqsolid cover with a board insert on the top for added protection. Also included, but not pictured, are the plastic mouldings which can be attached to the sides. Yes, I still have the screws for this and even still have the paper manual. I'm looking for £300 plus postage for this. I haven't been able to work out postage but it will be at cost, up to a maximum of £25. I would prefer collection, but would be willing to deliver for the cost of fuel up to 50 miles or so from PH13. I had a Blacka Acoustics flight case custom-made for this mixer. This is also for sale at £120, although I'm happy enough to hold on to it. Cheers. 15. Sansamp arrived today as promised. Would be happy to deal with Andrew again. Cheers , Beely
16. Hi. I would take the Sansamp. If you PM me your details I can arrange the transfer of funds. Cheers.
17. I'd sort of reached that conclusion. Shouldn't be too hard (I hope). Cheers.
18. Yeh, I got the 404 as well but I found it on the Fender website. Cheers.
19. Hi. It does actually. Think I'll just remove the neck, or at least slacken it off. Cheers.
20. Hi. Can anyone tell me the best way to get access to the truss rod adjuster on a Fender Mustang? Would there be enough room to adjust it if I took off the scratch-plate? I can see the top quarter of the screw but I can’t see if there is a routed space in the body that would allow access. Or, would it just be easier to slacken the strings and take the neck off. Fewer screws I suppose. I am getting a bit of fret-buzz. Not much but I’d like to get rid of it. The neck is dead straight. Am I right in thinking there should be a bit of relief and therefore I should slacken the truss rod off an eighth of a turn or so. I have done this sort of thing before but never on a Fender. Only on my Ric, which I believe is a very different animal. Any info/advice would be appreciated. Cheers.
21. Beautiful looking bass. Obviously cared for by its owners. You are correct about the strings. D'Addario XL Chromes, ECB81. I also must salute your impressive photographic skills.
22.
Reidmar IMO is a great little piece of kit, I bought one as an easy to carry backup for my Eden head, but nowadays leave the Eden at home. The reidmar may only be 250W at 4 ohms but by god its loud. Together with my Barefaced Compact its a light but damn loud combination. Might just squeeze in on your budget if you go 2nd hand Hope this helps.
Have to agree with this. I use my Reidmar with a Barefaced S12. Great sound and scary loud.
23. I hadn't thought about the pickup not being too good. That kind of takes the gloss off. I may stick with my original intention and go for a Mustang.
24. Cheers guys. I wouldn't like to change anything if I could avoid it. All I need to do now is persuade myself that I need this guitar. How hard can that be?
