  1. Hi. I have my eye on a Musicmaster. The only thing that bothers me slightly about this guitar is the bridge. I see that it's not possible to adjust the intonation for each string individually. Has anyone had a problem with this? If so, is it possible to retro-fit another type of bridge, for example one from a Mustang or something similar? Cheers for any advice.
  2. If you are still undecided, then I can give another recommendation for the Radial Bigshot i/o. Can attest to the build quality, very sturdy indeed. Good feature is the recessed screw for adjusting the volume of input 2. Guitarist in my band swaps between acoustic guitar and banjo and it balances two different signal strengths very well indeed. Also very handy is the "tuner out", as is the fact it doesn't need a battery. I'm well impressed.
  3. Good informative piece. I've only learned some of this stuff in the last few years, mostly from BC, and I've been playing for a very long time. Have to say I particularly enjoyed "My worst ever gig" and "Things to know if you're dating a musician". Quality.
  4. Check out Joey's Bass Notes. (http://www.joeysbassnotes.com) Extremely interesting and informative site. You'll find out pretty much all you need to know about neck adjustment.
  5. About four hours before a recent gig I received a text from our guitarist. "Really sorry man, can't make it tonight" We are auditioning a new guitarist tomorrow night, not entirely unconnected to aforementioned text.
  6. Try RickySounds. http://www.ricsrus.com/ There is a link on the home page for the full range of deluxe bezels. I have one fitted to my '78 4001. There are a few different styles, I got the one with the thumb recess at the top for the odd occasion I am not using a pick. They certainly tidy up the look of the guitar and are not too difficult to fit.
  7. Hi. Just to let any Perthshire-based BC’ers know, my band, The Engine House will be playing in The Taybank in Dunkeld this coming Saturday, 12[sup]th[/sup] October. Covers mostly; Neil Young, Steve Earle, Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, Ryan Adams, that sort of territory plus some pop/rock standards; Beatles, Stones etc. Be sure to say hello if you come along.
  8. I also have a 1978 4001. The gauge of strings you are using would be a bit too heavy for my liking and may be the source of some of your problem. I use D'Addario Chromes 45-100 and don't have any problem with getting a good action. I have had the bass from new so my memory may be playing tricks on me but I seem to recall the original strings on the guitar were actually even lighter than my current strings, perhaps 40-90. I once put on a set of Rotosound wire-wound strings to see what difference they made to the sound. They were quite a bit heavier than the strings on the bass, can't quite recall what the gauge was. I barely got the strings up to concert pitch before the neck started to bend and the action got "quite high". Needles to say, they came off pronto.
  9. Hi I have a Freshman acoustic bass. I use the same strings as I have on my 4001, D'Addario Chromes. I am happy enough with the sound but I'm only using the acoustic for solo practice. You might want a little more of the high end that you would get from roundwound strings but, as you say, a bit more finger/fret noise as well. One thing I would say, and it has been pointed out on BC many times, an acoustic bass is unlikely to keep up, volume-wise, with other acoustic instruments if it isn't amplified. My band has occasional "acoustic" practices and my acoustic bass is totally lost against an acoustic guitar and a fiddle. You just end up hammering the strings to be heard. I would recommend using even a tiny amp, just to lift the volume a bit. This, in turn, could dictate a wider choice of strings for you. Hope this helps a bit. Just noticed the previous post Re volume.
  10. I was going to sing the praises of Red 5 Audio's drum mic set when I noticed 51m0n has already mentioned them. Good quality, robust mics if you are on a budget, or even if you're not. Got a deal on at the moment, 5 free mic leads. These are good quality as well.

  12. I've had my Reidmar for a couple of months now. Never had any problems of any kind. As has been suggested, perhaps you have been unlucky. If you are happy with the sound then it would seem sensible to try a replacement. I don't know where you had the gain setting, I have mine about 2 o'clock. If you had the master at a quarter, you must have been pretty loud. Hope you get things sorted out.
  13. Hi. I bought a Samson CR77 UHF wireless unit a few months ago. It works well enough, but there is a noticeable hiss that peaks and decays with the strength of the note being played and disappears completely when the strings are muted. It sounds very much like the hiss you get when a UHF radio signal is not quite tuned spot on. I had a play around with the Squelch setting and the volume control but that doesn’t make any difference. The signal strength from the guitar, a 4001, seems a bit weak and only ever lights up as far as -10dB on the audio scale. Having said that, there is no shortage of volume. I don’t think it is something that can be heard over the noise of a 5-piece band in full flow, so it’s probably not too much of an issue from that point of view. I’m just curious to find out if there is something wrong with it or if that’s just how it is. Thanks in advance for any help/info. Cheers.
  14. I've used my S12 as a replacement for 2 peavey 1x15 bass bins when we couldn't transport them due to lack of space in my car. Powered the S12 from a separate amp with a feed from the mono/sub output from our Samson TXM 20 mixer. Parked it in the middle of the stage at the front and, unsurprisingly, did a very good job. Incidentally, I wasn't playing bass: I had my sound man's hat on that night. If I had been playing bass then I wouldn't have given up the S12 for any reason.
  15. I used to have a BA115. Great sounding amp but there was always an annoying hiss from the tweeter. (Don't know if there is a tweeter in the 112.) The only other downside, for me anyway, was it seemed to tilt back rather too easily.
  16. Just bought a stageClix Jack from Bass Gear. I phoned up to see if they had any in stock. I think it was Phil I spoke to, seemed a really genuine guy. Ordered yesterday and it was delivered less than 24 hours later. Outstanding service! Only downside is that it is for my son, not me......
  17. A bit of a co-incidence, a thread on this subject cropping up as I was going to start one called “problem frequencies” I recently bought an EBS Reidmar as a light-weight replacement for my SVT 4-Pro. I found that with the 4-Pro, the area around 800/900 Hz was where I needed to cut slightly to stop my 4001 sounding…. well, clanky. I also used the Ultra Lo switch to boost the bass at 50Hz, the upper frequencies at 5kHz and further cut the mids at 560Hz. (And yes, I did have to look these figures up). With the Reidmar I found that, ultimately, I had to do a similar thing with the settings, using the Ultra Lo equivalent, which is called “Character”, but does pretty much the same job. There is also a continuously variable mid-selector which I ended up setting at about 800hz and cutting slightly. I changed amps for no other reason than weight, not because I was unhappy with the sound I was getting. Far from it. It was only natural that I would look for the same sound from the Reidmar. I was however, slightly surprised that I had to do more or less the same thing with the amp settings to get the same (similar) sound as the Ampeg. As well as a preference/taste thing, I guess it’s a guitar thing too. Seems reasonable to suppose most guitars will produce frequencies that are not to our taste and we will try to eliminate them. My own procedure for setting the guitar is quite simple:- both pick-ups on, volume and treble flat out. Everything else is done from the amp. In conclusion, the short answer to your short question is…. “cut”
  18. Have to join in the praise for Roqsolid. I needed a cover/bag for my new EBS Reidmar. First enquiry last Tuesday at 8.15pm, reply in less than 10 minutes. Ordered the next day and it arrived on Saturday. Once again, great product and service to match.
  19. I've just bought a Reidmar this week and have to say I'm well impressed. Playing it through a Super 12 and it sounds fantastic (and loud). You might want to try the head through your Compact first and see how it goes. Unless you are getting a special deal buying a Reidmar and Classic at the same time you could always get the cab later. I doubt if you would have any trouble shifting the Barefaced if you decided to change.
  20. I've used an SVP Pro with a W-Audio Horizon 1100w and got very impressive results. You can get different models, 5 I think, varying from 300w-1300w which vary in physical size as well, so you could get one of the smaller ones to match the size of your pre so they could fit in a small flight case.
  21. Also have a Hiscox case for my 4001. The model is Liteflite Standard STD-EBP. About £100 or so.

    Fave guitar solo?

I suppose I could post any number of Bill Nelson guitar solos that would highlight his sheer genius but this has to be my favourite of all time. Starts at 1.49 and doesn't last nearly long enough. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qm-YetCuMgo&feature=fvwrel
