1.
mint condition
Love it.
2. Cheers guys.
And all done with a chisel. Nice work fella.
Yup chipped away at it with this bad boy. I think you get a much better feel for the wood than just ripping in with a router... and it is far more accurate (unless you have CNC)

Pingray

I made me a new bass. The Pingray (I hated the name to begin with but it's been bandied around so much now that I've gotten used to it ) The concept was formed around putting Stingray and P pickups into one guitar in their authentic positions to see what happens when you combine the 2 classic tones. Ingredients: Genuine MusicMan Stingray pup Delano PMVC 4 FE/M2 pup Seymour Duncan STC-2P 2-band (@ 18v) Fender Jazz body (stripped, plugged and re-routed) Dr Parts P neck (corrected and refinished to a high standard) White nitro primer Surf Green nitro Clear Gloss nitro (body & headstock face) Clear Satin (neck) Badass III Hipshot tuners, de-tuner & string retainer Genuine MusicMan Stingray pickguard Chrome knobs by ACG The controls are vol > blend > concentric bass and treble. No mechanical apparatus (apart from drills) were used in the construction, everything including the p/g was done with traditional hand tools - chisels, files, sanding blocks etc. As mentioned the 'ray pup is exactly in the MM sweet spot (as dictated by the p/g) and the E/A section of the Delano is millimetre perfect to standard Fender P position - the D/G section would have crossed over the MM pup territory so I reversed it à la the Sandberg P series, only using the afore mentioned spacings instead of Sandberg's. The one-off control plate is made from Spanish Cedar and finished to match the body. The 'ray pup soloed through the SD pre-amp with bass up full and treble rolled back a tad from full bangs out a very recognisable punchy 2eq Stingray sound. Soloed, the Delano using the same eq settings gives a very powerful and clear P bass tone with masses of bottom. Centre the blend then offer a little extra 'ray bias to the mix and omfg Pingray! The bass made it's debut at the Moffat bash and apparently blew some minds.... both aesthetically and tonally. Which was nice!
4. Your powers of deduction are unparallelled Holmes.
5.
I wouldn't mod it, but it's not my bass.
That's the question right there. Whose bass is it? Is it Chris' or is he just looking after it for the next guy? Oh and Matt, when have you never modded a bass that belonged to you?
6. This is Neepheid's old T-bird. I've played this bass and it had a huge, punchy sound. It was in great nick then (not sure about the new makeover though ) and I know it took a bit of effort for him to find the right pickguard for it too.
7.
....If its not that, then de-solder it and get on with the job - as prospective owner buying a '64 of someone that claimed it was original I'd be well p!ssed off if I found out that you'd put a pre in it anyway....
I need to understand something. If he did the mod then decided to sell the bass but returned everything back to oringinal (minus the solder of course) would you still be pissed off? edit :Ha ha Ok I type slow.
8. Please don't take this the wrong way but unless you've had it from new then how do you personally know that the solder is original? As long as you don't make a complete hash of it (solder peaks, scolds, flux bubbles everywhere etc.) then the solder will oxidise nicely in a few months and no one would know it's not new. You could use some non lead-free solder for that authentic touch if you really thought that prospective buyers would get all CSI on your solder. (I have some that I could send you if it's hard to come by these days) And all this ignores the ludicrousness that surrounds the subject of original solder in the first place.
9. I didn't watch it, are you allowed frontmen that play guitar/bass/drums in this series? Hendrix wasn't a great vocalist but one hell of a frontman.
10. You've really caught the happy atmosphere with these pics Peter. Can't wait 'til the next 'un.
11.
Presume this has been sold?
At that price I would have thought so. I just hope Guillaume got his fingers back.
12.
"Precision"? Shurely shome mishtake?
Absolutely. Now pay attention Bond.
13. Unless you have original spares (which wouldn't surprise me ) or your own electroplater I think there's too much rust and pitting there to bring it back Jon.
14.
There's a vote for best bassist - coming soon http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/rocknrollband/bassists/
The panel = Zoe Ball, Edith Bowman, Fearne Cotton, Bob Harris, Jools Holland, Greg James, Shaun Keaveny, Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne , Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Stuart Maconie, Scott Mills, Huey Morgan, Nemone, Mark Radcliffe, Jonathan Ross, Huw Stephens, Jo Whiley. With such notable and learned musical heavyweights as these you just know the outcome is going to impact our lives in such a big way. I'll give Mark Radcliffe the benifit of the doubt though.
15.
I'm not a miserable git as pictured.
Was Craig David on the same bill that night?
16. Great job, especially with the head reshape.
17. Fantastic!
18.
Looks like a superb time was had by all Really sorry I couldn't make it this time. It would have been good to see all you guys again and see another 9 string. My wife was looking forward to it as well. I'll keep taking the pills.
It wasn't the same without you. No one played The Chain once. Quite a few guys were looking forward to seeing your 1 stringer again.
19. I have Betty. The name came about because while I was building her I planned on putting a Betty Page decal on her somewhere as a saucy '50s icon. I never got round to it but the name stuck. A lot of my basses are homemade so they do tend to have pet names. My latest is Pingray - the concept was to build a Precision & Stingray combo.
20. Where's Geoff Byrne? He's got some great pics and recordings of his band The Corvettes from the '60s. Fascinating stuff.
21. I thought it was just a dream.
22. Let's face it he looks more like a Craig than a Bertie.
23.
Not sure why Bertie the drummer is now called Craig. Who started that up.
I copied it off Dave's pics.
