It doesn't have a centre click so you just need to use your ears. I used to run mine bass up almost full and treble about half.
I believe this to be true too. I run mine with bass full up and the treble rolled back a little from full to cut the sizzle.
 2.
I can only speak from my own experience with my SUB. I wouldn't dream of changing a thing. The SUB has a great sound all on it's own. I just don't understand the lack of beef comment. Mine has it in shedloads. Perhaps there is something wrong with the bass that it isn't giving out enough. I'll grant you that a change of pickguard improves the looks but apart from that I struggle to know why you would want to change anything. The SUB is what it is. It's not a Ray. I actually prefer the SUB sound to the Ray that's why I kept it and sold my Ray. I don't think that the differences are vast but the SUB has it's own sound. The SUB is also an American made quality bass. It just doesn't cost as much as a Ray. As for the weak G string - I had it on my Ray but not on the SUB. Sometimes I feel we get into a mindset of always assuming that a standard pup somehow must need replacing. However, it's all down to how we feel about our own instruments. If you can't get on with a bass, sell it on until you find the Holy Grail for you. All the best!
A big +1 to all this.
 3. Just use what you've got lying about. Think outside the box too - who says it's got to be made from wood?
 4. Aesthetics aside, the long and the short of it is that Stingrays nail the Stingray sound and SUBs get close but not quite but are cheaper.
 5. Being a local it was already on my watch list. I actually considered the benefits of not having to pay postage on it.
 6.
I've got my SUB back today I'm debating getting my electronics wizard friend to rewire the pickup. Does anyone know if it is do-able or how easy it is? I'm debating getting a Nordstrand pickup but if I'm going to spend £100+ on it, I'm wondering on whether trying to bag a second hand EBMM StingRay instead...thoughts on the difference between a SUB and a EBMM? Either way, going to get a black pickguard, the gunshell metal is awful. Any suggestions on where to look?
If your electronics friend is indeed a wiz then he'd probably handle it - it's just not a nice job for keen amateurs. Get him to do it on a switch so you can go back and forth... then realise the the original wiring is best. Regarding the diff between SUB and 'ray pups I mentioned it twice already above. Good luck finding a spare original 'ray pup btw.
 7. Deep. That's exactly how I'd describe the neck on these. Chunky seems to be overstating it compared to other necks out there.
 8. What a beauty.
 9. I've got one too. Very nice traditional burpy Jazz sound (especially in the lower register) - got TI flats on mine. Being ultra picky, the build quality isn't top (but then it is a Fender ) - I had an overly tight G tuner and the bridge was slightly misaligned. I fixed both myself, a bit of remedial work on the tuner and fitted a BadAss II (a very common mod for these basses). Be warned, if you're just thinking about getting it as a back-up bass, you might find it gets played a lot more than you planned. Mine.
 10. I don't have anything decent to record with short of just plugging my PX4D straight into my lappy but I'll see what I can do about some clips.
 11. Sounds like a step in the right direction.
 12. And now I want my old S.U.B. back.
 13.
Im convinced its a EQ/Freq and technique thing....
Yeah that makes better sense to me too. My 'ray is a 2eq and no limp G string here.
 14.
Had this before, get a phone number off ebay, you'll talk to his mum, and there will be shouting, followed by a parcel.
15.
i was wondering what you used to fill in the spaces of the previous pups? i have an old cheap pbass i have been intending to do this on for a while now. looks great
I didn't fill the previous routs as such as it wasn't necessary. Instead I made "struts" from some ceder off cuts to support the new pups. For those of you with a nervous disposition, look away now ....... I wanted a clean look for this bass and so wanted to aviod digging out a rear cavety for the 'lectrics. I solved this by fitting it all in under the p/g. Taking the p/g off this bass is a little like lifting the hood of a mini and finding a Chevy V8 You can see where the pre-amp and the 2 PP3s fit quite neatly into the equation. If you follow the line of dots for the p/g screw holes you can see that I didn't have much room to play with. . As Metalmoore said there is an in depth build diary elsewhere on t'internet (here - but you must be logged in to view it)
 16. (Slightly OT but) I'm not sure what to think about this weak G phenomenon. When I first got my 'ray I was showing it off to a fellow bassist (who was very well informed but had little first hand knowledge) he loved the sound of the bass but commented that it had a quiet G string - it so totally didn't - but because he'd read about it he then thought he could hear it. Also, I've just built a bass using a genuine 'ray pup (2006 I believe) which was take out of it's original home because of it allegedly having a quiet G (the replacement Nordy fixed his problem) but when I put it in my project bass, you guessed it, no quiet G - in fact sometimes I think it's too loud when popping. I've had 2 Fender '51 pups with weak E strings but to date no probs with MM pups. Maybe I've been lucky.
 17.
Screw him and leave neg feedback
+1 This sounds pretty much what WaynePD went through a couple of weeks back with a cheap bass. You can't make him sell it to you despite there being a binding contract but you can warn others that he is a cheating C U next Tuesday.
 18.
But the SBMM range aren't cheaper than the SUB. They arent budget versions of the SUB, they are budget versions of the SR and Sterling. For around £300 they are nice basses, im not denying that, but i still think the Ray34 is built better and has a better finish. Just my thoughts (again).
Isn't the new price on a SBMM a fair bit less than what the SUBs were selling for when they were new? I'd agree that the finish could be better on the SBMM (only seen photos mind) but I can't see how they could be built better - I had no quibbles with mine in that respect at all. I'd go as far as saying that my SUB was put together better than any Fender I've had and equally as good as my 'ray.
 19. That seriously sucks. You could always try getting in touch with Proel (google it) who I believe are (or at least were at the time I bought mine) the main distributor for the UK. I found their CS to be pretty good. Be up front and honest and see what happens. Good luck.
 20. Ooh have I been gazumped?
 21. Et voilà.
 22.
I'd be after this if it wasn't for the flowers. I love Bridge position P pup, and beefy bridges, and chunky necks. Not so much with the blue flowers though.
Couple of tins of spray paint would sort that for you.
 23. Ha ha good find. It's hard to know where to start with this one.
Sound wise you have the basic precision ...
...only the pup is a foot to the left. I'll bet you anything the pup selector gives you either one or the other and not both.
 24.
I've not been round these parts much recently, but i'd just like to say that's one of the most stunning basses i've ever laid eyes on! Nicely done that man!
Cheers man.
had a quick fiddle with this at the bash and the range of tones is awesome. The fit and finish is spectacular and the saint job is ace. If it was mine i wouldn't put is down either
25.
I wondered if the string post is being pulled hard against the headstock bushes when it string is under tension.
Seeing as you have already stripped and lubricated the components to no avail, I'd say this is the most likely cause. I've had this before. If it is the case then the best you can do is slacken off the tuner screws that actually hold them onto the headstock while under tension from the strings then tighten them back up again and hope that the fixings have aligned with the bushes. The alternative fix is pretty drastic and best left to someone that knows what they are doing. Of course over time if not rectified now the post will wear down at the point of contact and will eventually fix itself.
