1. It all depends upon what sound you are after but without doubt the best pup on the planet for this kind of bass is a Lollar - believe me I have tried a few different makes. You can't buy them new over here, you have to get them sent over fron the States.
 2. It's really nice to see a vintage bass that's been well looked after and been treated with the respect it deserves. I'm fed up seeing beat up old basses turning up and folk falling over themselves with "wow what a great example" when it's clearly not.
 3.
Im very tempted to buy the Blueburst L2500 trib on here but i expect it will go before i make a decision.
I'm pretty tempted too. I thought about it the last time it was up but I'm running out of space for new basses.
 4.
One thing that has put me off is that some people have said its quite an aggressive tone. I really dont want that although im guessing it can be dialled out.
I think that's a fair comment. I've not intentionally tried it myself but yeah I'm pretty sure it could be dialled out. edit : I've got one eye on the Grand Prix and the other on this and forgot to mention that the passive/active switch can control that aggressiveness a heck of a lot. I did this mod on Neepheid's L2K Trib for him and it opened up even more possibilities.
 5.
Cool thread as i was going to ask the same. I keep looking at the G&L's and wondering if its worth the outlay just to find out if i like them or not. Im tempted to get a SR5 but the G&L 2500 is so much cheaper, and i might get some of my P tone back (not that im looking for a perfect P tone, just a bit closer than my Ray gets).
What you need is one of these then. :brow: (+ an extra string) I'm no expert by any means on G&L's but I have played both Korean & USA models both are fantastic - only played 2 pup versions I think - HH, JJ etc. You can't equate USA vs Korean as simply as a 'ray vs SUB situation because of the variety of tones you can get. But unlike 'rays the G&L's don't have a signature tone just a fantastic all round delivery. Considering the price of second hand G&L 2500's you can't go wrong - you might not get exactly what you envisage but what you get won't disappoint.
how much are these tributes I keep hearing about btw? olp price range?/dearer?
You can pick up a L2000 Trib for £300-350. They are completely out of OLP's league in every respect.
 6.
I call it the note plank.
I actually lawl'd.
 7.
Given that there is no verb "to pedant", one can be neither "pedanted" nor "out-pedanted".
Whatever it's called, you just did it... in style.
 8. Not yet, I need more convincing. But I do like this "out-pedanted" concept.
 9. I suppose those lines are "finger-markers".
 10. See that black plank glued to the front of the maple neck? It's called a fretboard.
 11.
Guys, does the standard MM stringray pickguard fit on the SUB as well?
It practically does. I had a black 'ray p/g on my black S.U.B. (seriously sexy). It fitted perfectly but some of the screws were pushed out of alignment of you put them in one at time. I found it best to screw them all in almost all the way down then when they were all in just nip them up the last bit and they found their own optimum positions.
 12. An awful lot of folk regularly say that Tribs can do a good Stingray sound (usually when they are trying to sell one) - they point blank can't. But it they do have an array of amazing sounds of their own, which to me if anything are more akin to a P bass on steroids. 1 value for money - both score highly especially 2nd hand. 2 quality of sound - again both have it in buckets. 3 lesser being - no The 'ray is a bit of a one trick pony. But it is one mother of a trick. G&Ls can do a lot of different sounds, often that huge amount choice leads to frustration because you are constantly twiddling. If you're 'ray curious, the best thing to do is go and try one. If you lived near me I'd let you have a go on mine but Portsmouth is pushing it a bit.
 13. Could be a candidate for a 2 stringer.
 14. Sweet. I had the SRX300.
 15. They certainly like their block inlays - even on their MMs "for that traditional look".
 16. I find OLP are more about styling than functionality - the components and construction are just about acceptable and totally they are very vanilla... but they look ok from a distance.
 17. Jazz basses immediately spring to mind of you are into a traditional bass sound (there are plenty Squiers knocking about). The Ibanez Sound Gear range (what I started out on) are great with very thin necks which are awesome to noodle on up the dusty end and give you a more modern sound.
 18. Half a dozen guys off here making offers of £550 aught to get them to warm to your offer.
 19.
Quick question for those who own these, do they have the big routing around the neck pickup and throught to the control plate like some MIM Jazz Basses do, or is it a nice neat route just for the pickup? I am interested as I really fancy a sunburst one with no pickguard for a kind of Jaco look, they just look great in sunburts without the guard for some reason.
Good news or bad news? The good news is that the neck pup rout is pup shaped.... ... the bad news is that there is a bloody great hole under the p/g for the CNC whatsit. So it's a no go on the no p/g I'm afraid. Mine again - after I shielded it out.
 20.
One month's rent or bass.... hmmm
Simples!
 21.
... The SUB is an amzing bass too, in its own right. The looks (for the most part) of the Ray and a sound all of its own. much more guttural and thick, but still retains brightness...
That's it in a nutshell right there.
 22. One word - Fecking bargain!
 23.
lol I'm a bassist from NY, and my idol is Kurt Cobain, but my bass idol is Krist Novoselic. So I combine the trick style of both. I usually go pretty crazy as in, lay on the floor and play, Jump up and down and play, play it like a stand up bass, move my hips back and forth, headband, scissor kick, lean over the end of the stage, and wave the bass around during the end of a song to get distortion and sh*t XDDD
Here's a neat trick for ya to try then.
