I hear unmolested ones have tripled in value. Sadly mod'd ones are worth a packet of penny bubblies. Sadly no one on BC has an unmolested one.
Oh havent they? A
That's actually not strictly true: For £59.99 you got a bass, gigbag, strap, lead, truss rod tool and a bridge allen key.
and the signed tastefully posed pic of Sue herself. Or was that just for me? A
You are a scary individual, talking about brain surgery as though it was as complicated as changing strings (jealous, very, I am). What was the reason to change the rod?
Basically it was shagged. The alan slot was rounded off and it moved about an inch back and forth in the neck. It came like that but I didnt bother to do it before the transformation. When I got it out the nut wouldnt turn at all so thats why it was knackered. I think mine was a return. Bought when they were thin on the ground! It was fine for a bit as is but gradually the action was getting a bit high to say the least. I should mention that the slot was machined 10mm wide so you can extract the rod and nut end. Thats also why you have to go past the original stripe so you hit the 10mm cavity for the nut and have enough room to lever it out. You dont actually need a CNC to do this just a mill or router. The trickiest bit was making the insert and machining it down to 10mm wide (actually 10.2mm for a snug fit). That ebony is horrid to work with. Its like charcoal not wood!!! btw hows the ebony thumb rest coming on?? A

If anyones interested in replacing the truss rod in thier Ryder neck read on. I didnt want to ruin the finger board after all that hard work so I went in through the back! The skunk stripe is cosmetic. No suprise there lol. So I set it up in a CNC and machined out following the stripe using a 10mm bit to a depth of 6mm. This was just enough to kiss the existing truss rod. You also have to go past the stripe by about 10mm at the head so you can pull the rod out. Its a standard £10 9x6mm jobby. pics below of the process and after. Note: This only applies to a Rosewood Fingerboard neck I believe the Maple FB necks are a different shape. rod removed and slot 10mm passed original body end new rod fitted finished neck with ebony insert left over from Rosie's finger board That is all A

My hero too. The begining of 'Real me' gives me goose bumps every time. Bless him. A

Probably not any use now youve bought it but I have both a lined and unlined and find the unlined much easier to play. I only have side dots on the fret positions (The usual 3,5,7 etc). I, probably like most people, thought it would be the other way round but nope. Those lines and dots just confuse you and keep you in your fretted 'box'. So if your up to buying another I would go for nothing but side dots. Fretless makes you think about what your doing. Which is a good thing edit: They look soooooooo cool as well A

Saw this as I was looking for a fretless acoustic. Thought it looked intreaging and cool. Being Italian and all that. Not sure what the pick up is in it etc. Not going to get it though. After investigation I dont think its worth £220. I was going to recoment you swap out the lot with an Semour duncon active replacement then realised you wont have the back cover on your passive Doh!! I did this with mine 'couse I had the exact same bass only the 3eq active. Its now a fretless all black baby. I think these basses are pretty good in thier own right. Why not just get some replacement pots and off you go One question though, why have you got a fixing screw either side of the pickup on the scratch plate? Nine didnt have that!! A

siddlx this is a bit beyond the call of duty mate. I think you deserve a lie down . I dont envy your self imposed quest A

Convert your Precision to an upright bass!
apa replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I think its a very good idea with two small flaws. Its done with no style and you buy the real thing for less. I suppose if you REALY want an upright P. Of course girls wont be able to play it since they cant do a P standing up HAAHAHAH Oh stop me someone A -
-
Love that headstock!! But I dont think the angled pickups go with a symetrical MM scratch plate. A
-
Very nice strings. Smooth and like worn in rounds in sound. Nicer than the roto ones and Im a roto man. The only thing I would say is they are lower tension to what Im used to. Well they feel that way anyway. Perfect for fretless A

Shall I bid £899.99 and see if hes a man of his word?? A
Thanks Giblett your comments are very much appreciated :-) I have only fairly recently taken this lutherie malarcy up again after a 20 odd year gap, never had the premises up till now. I was intending to build one or two for sale this year but unfortunately events have overtaken me and i am now having to rennovate then move to a new house, so time has become well limited. When i'm settled into the new (bigger) shed we'll see how it goes ...... Apa - what you see here are hollow wooden shells which are made from walnut with the burr elm veneer (still to be thinned down a bit btw ) on top. The pickups themselves will be housed inside. IanM
Ahhh right so they will be loose covers that dont need to be attached? A
-
Realy realy nice bit of poshwood How did you attach the veneer to the pickups Ian? Im assuming its veneer onto plastic casing? If so are you conserned about the movement of the veneer on a very stable surface like plastic? A

The ones that came on my Vintage Ray copy do the job. Nicely cast and made, no sharp edges. Tight, no play and dont detune. All good stuff. A
