You know the whole "matching headstock" thing?
apa replied to Happy Jack's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The use of the words 'Guitar' and 'Guitarist' gives you a clue as the to nightmare world this poor defenceless bass lives in. Almost makes me want to buy it to save it. A -
Not too worried about having to do so, and yes, as a band we have just been told no jeans, trainers or t-shirts, it was the no socks think that struck me as totally pompous and archaic Club Captain - didn't know golf (outside Ryder Cup) was a team game
and on that note you will of course be playing your Sue Ryder Bass Ill get my tux!!
The growl from an "F" on the "E" string on a four string...
how odd i was thinking of starting this post myself but thought it would have been odd lol. Anyway im with the greek. An F on the E string has a certain dark growl. A

its not a case of being anti high mass for me. I've just bought one but only because i want something that looks different. Its more a case that sound wise you don't get your sound per pound with anything fancy. A

Yes but did he torque the screws to the same N/m? Yep with this all the way lol A

If your looking for Pressure wound or Ground wound I would recommend GHS Bright Flats. Thier not flats though thier Ground wound!! I also have a set of Roto pressure wound and I couldnt tell the difference in feel between them and rounds but after bedding in they are nice enough strings. Still go for the GHS's though. Oh and good luck finding them!! Your best bet is Ebay direct from the US. Not to highjack but if anyone else wants to chip in with a recomendation on ground/pressure wounds Im also looking for a set to try on a fretless Jazz A
I'm glad you've found a set you like and that suits you. Ive only managed it on 4 out of 10 instruments, and they're all from different manufacturers. Generally 40-100 or 45,65,80,100 (give or take a 125 here and there), though.
Thanks. I have different types from different manufacturers on all mine. Loving my GHS Bright flats, GHS Nylons, Cromes, Elite Stadiums and the Roto Nylons. Going off Roto Rounds and Ground Wounds and not too impressed with Elite Players. A
I've done it myself. Completely QED'd my hi-fi out (speakers and connectors) all at great expense (well more than I can justify). I can't tell the difference.... but maybe... just maybe... one day someone will come round mine, hear some tunes and say "Hey mate, nice open sound-stage you have here. What cables are you using?" and I'll be ready with an answer that will be met with a raised eyebrow and a nod of approval. It'll be soooo worth it.
I know lol. Your waiting for the question but it never comes............. Thankfully I never got past 79 strand Low Oxygen. But I did aroldite some 6 inch nails in the bottom of one of my tables for my Manticore Mantra turntable. Unfortunatly they sank straight into the chipboard floor! Oh and working out the geometry for the perfect position of my Warfedale Speakers was not something a normal 17yo should be doing of an evening in his bedroom A
Because Pete Cornish is a legend who builds custom pedalboards & stuff for lots of famous guitarists, and people like to own stuff with exclusive names that their heroes use. Most of use have done it with some bit of gear at some point. Apparently it's his wife that puts the cables together though, so I don't know if this would effect the price if it was common knowledge.
Is she hot? A
Either that kettle lead is 2m(iles) long, made from platinum and saffron, hand woven by Jesus H Christ, or they mistakenly put a comma where they meant to put a decimal point.
Never under estimate the gulability of some Audiophiles.............. If it was made from 100% Oxygen free pure scotch mist someone would by it. What gets me is they boast about the delivery times......... 48Hrs, erm isnt that Economy Rate? So the 2m of cable between the 100m of cheap copper cable and RCD's and Fuses and screw terminals and weakened hard strand where the sparky has bent it a few times and lumps of mortar and switches which youve sparked a zillion times that makes up your house wiring and your super dooper amp/turntable/CD/DAB etc makes all the difference!!
Everyone has their own favourites on here, but the (very) general consensus seems to favour the following brands; (with caveats attached) DR - Can be excellent, but with a question mark over recent quality issues. Expensive. Elixir - Coated. Last ages. Coating wears, especially with a plectrum. Some don't like the tone/ feel. Some do! Thomastik-Infeld (TI) - Relatively hard to get. Expensive. Flats are superb and lower tension than usual. D'Addario - Seem well liked. Not heard many gripes. Status - Good range. Relatively inexpensive, but availability can vary somewhat. Rotosound - Polarize opinion. Very bright to begin with, but die quickly with lots of sweat etc. Some shops seem to have stock from 1960 still. Elites - A brand once heavily connected to "The Bass Centre". Less so now. Cheap(ish) and cheerful. They seem/sound ok and last well. Until you try a more expensive brand. Ernie Ball - Another one which polarizes opinion. Some love them, others.... don't Warwick - Red label are cheap, bright and die young. Yellows are Nickel and are pretty ok, last a while and don't cost a fortune. Blacks are supposed to be really good, but I've not tried them. The pack of EMPs (coated) I had were a joke in terms of sound per pound. They were all dead before they hit the bass. There are loads of others; Many instrument makers have their own brand (from Fender to Ken Smith and back!) Picato, Newtone, Pyramid, and LaBella to name but few and plenty I've probably forgotten. The trick seems to be; Find a brand that you like the tone/feel of That reliably produce good quality strings Which are readily available That are manufactured in the Gauge and Scale you want That work well with the instrument in question Including actually fitting it! Which are suitably durable And don't necessitate a second mortgage Then all you need to do is find a retailer that rotates their stock and turns it over swiftly so you're assured of geting a fresh set And because it's so subjective, EVERYONE'S mileage will vary. To Quote JC (No. Jeremy Clarkson) "Really,How hard can it be?" Very. And frustrating. But when you get the right mix of Instrument/Strings/Pick-ups/Electrics/Amp, it all just "clicks"
All very true Lfalex and thanks for that. We can talk and talkbut until your fingers do the talking theirs not much point. Im going to get a set of Elite Stadium 45's. You wanna know why? Because I like them. Finding a nice set of strings is a bit like finding good music: Its usually by accident Ill ponder over a nice set of ground/pressure wounds for my other posh fretless Jazz........................ A

Hmmm well it looks like it they are the Stadium series but there does also seem to be an emphasis on 'DID' and 'USED TO'. Hmmmm now Im all for a bit of experimentation so DR's are even more tonal and rich? Well they should be for the money!! Which DR's exactly silddx? Might splash out on a set for my posh Jazz Im currently assembling A

The un silked ones are the 'Player' Series which are nickel plated and yes they are Horrible things silddx But the red/blue silked ones are lovely, very tonal and rich. So it might be the 'Stadium' Series then chrismuzz? A
