1. I didnt know you could get OLP steel guitars! A
2. Hmmmm Going to have to go for a pint and think about this. A
3. Thanks iKay Thats what I want for the piezo. Set the eq and close the lid. What I dont want is 2 volume knobs. One for the mags and one for the piezo. Although I suppose I could live with the vol on the jretro and then bring the piezo in with its own volume but that would mean an increase in volume. Just like the traditional VVT of a jazz which I hate. Just thinking out loud here. A
4. Hmmm John Easts mixers look ok but I will have one output from the Jretro and one from the piezo so not sure it will do. His mixers are then meant to send the signal to a preamp are they not? Anyway Ill have a chat with him. I want to blend the two. Thank for that guys. A
5. I have a plan to make another J Deluxe only this time with added piezo. The complicating factor is it will have something along the lines of a J Retro. What Ive got in my head at the mo is the J Retro plus piezo with preamp. In other words 2 outputs. This then gets blended which means one extra pot control. Keeping it relitivly simple. Ill be happy for the piezo to be set with trim pots internally to get the balance and tone right. The question is what do I need and how? Im sure just a centre indent pot before the output jack is way to simple and would probably negate all the good work the J Retro would do. Ive had a search and a few people have done passive but not the active route. Your thought and pointers please. A
6. Sooooooo Its been exactly one year that Tom1946 told us all about the now infamous RP-1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUE It now begs the question: Where are they now? Still gigging it? Still modding it? Still keeping it under the bed as an investment? Im guessing that since the winter has been so mild alot of them are still on the wood pile? My two are still going strong. The modded fretless is played regularly and still gives a nice sound. Im still a happy bunny. The other stock one is still, erm, under the bed accumilating for my retirement. A
7.
Cheers for the help guys! Might go pick one of those up tomorrow! @apa, you mention new pickups, are there any in particular I should be looking out for? Regards.
The pickups are fine in their own wright. I liked them to begin with but Im thinking of changing them for a bit more oomph. Top of my list for pickups would be Wizard. Very reasonable price, very fast and personal service, very nice pickups and made in Wales. I might go for Thumpers in my VM. Oh and one more upgrade which again is not a must is going active. Ive got an Audere in my VM and a John East J-retro in my bitsa. Makes it all very versatile and interesting. But thats all in the future. Go get a VM and have fun. The mods can come later if needs be or your that way inclined http://www.wizardpickups.co.uk/ A
8.
They took it to court and it was deemed they didn't protect them enough so the designs became generic so they lost them. Is going to a salesman and asking who designed them protecting his design ?? I actually think he looks a bit of a tool in the video. Either he knows he hasn't a legal leg to stand on so is doing it for drama and the oh woe me look how awful this is these guys are costing me money ripping off my deigns blub blub and the publicity of a viral video. Or he hasn't a set of balls big enough to actually confront someone ripping off his design. I think it's just two faced the way people are fine with countless Fender and Gibson copies. People on here deride John Hall and the Rickenwaffen for the way they get on on despite possibly not having E.U. copyrights for what he protects. We even have a thread dedicated to rickenfakers with people asking questions like whats a decent Rickenfaker? Who does a good one now? Why isn't Sheldon Dingwall getting abuse for making a P bass or Warwick for making a EB style bass in their relevant threads . We've had threads asking whats the best Non-Gibson Thunderbird and no one has batted an eyelid. What makes Ritter so special that he deserves the collected outrage of the community. Especially when it seems he hasn't the interest intaking the necessary measures to protect his designs anyway. So if he isn't worried why should everyone else get worked up by it?
Exactly (the bit about Ritter confronting the guy) If he realy wanted to make this a big issue he would have ask the guy outright what they are doing and told him who he is. Then he would have gone to the NAMM organisers and told them whats on the Tang stall. (Because the NAMM organisers whouldnt have a clue who Tang are and what they make now whould they!!!) This wasnt an expose it was an amateur ill thought out half assed poke. Why not get all the evidence take a lawer and slap the papers down infront of the guy if you can. Oh hold on he has a stall himself at NAMM. As for copying others designs. As far as Im conserned its a bit of a red herring talking about Lakland etal copying Fender. It doesnt say fender therefore its almost an advert for them or if Fenders were as good as Laklands then Lakland would go out of business. Its when Trade Tang go putting logos and serial numbers on thats the prob. FYI I work as a packaging designer. We copy each other all the time. Move one little bit and were safe. On the odd occasion we do copyright its usually a waste of money. One or two companies have been succesfully sued but very few. Its very common for a customer to send a pack in and say 'Can you copy this?' We do and someone else does as well. Its the lowest commercial price that wins. A
9.
Sunburst is the work of devil, every sunburst bass I've ever had has been stripped down and re-painted.
Now dont go giving him ideas A
10.
Wow thanks a lot guys! The only thing I KIND of dislike about my bass is the Sunburst finish.. Not A HUGE fan, Still nice but It's not really my thing.
Good here init Oh and one day you'll thank your dad and post on here saying how much you miss your first bass A
11. If she had played it. It would have been cool A
12.
hi there new to fretless. just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this suier fretless? http://www.andertons...ur-sunburst.asp Or any alternatives around the same price mark. Cheers
Hi Alec (and welcome) These are well respected, as andydye says. Ive got the fretted version and its a very comfortable playable bass for the money. The only small thing to note is the pick ups arent that good. Took me a while to realise this. Its an easily upgraded. Heres a tip. If you hang around here long enough you'll probably get one for a good £100 less second hand. A
13. Your going to risk getting a replacement where 1. one pup doesnt work ie no one bothered to plug it in once it was built to even see if it works or not and 2. It was built by some one who doesnt know how to use a screwdriver. Your a braver man than I * A *How long have those other 2 pages of emoticons been there?? A
14.
Wellington Timber and Yandles of Martock both in Somerset.
Ive been to Yandles many a time. Nice selection if you have a good look. They keep thier stock in a shed. OK for carpentry if its the thin planks. Ive used tonnes of the stuff in my house. But the piece of Ash I bought bowed like a banana, literally, after sitting in my flat for a week. Just sayin A
15. I saw Ellis Beggs and Howard in the T&C in Camden a long time ago. They were bloody good. I do remember the whole gig had a fantastic driven element to it. Lots of energy. Must have been Robbie France. RIP A
16. Luither suppliers often sell blanks for body and necks. For what it is its over priced IMO. You can go to specialised wood suppliers but you have to watch out with the curing process. They are often stored in sheds so if you start building straight away youll end up with a banana. Not answered your question soz. Have you tried ebay? Theres a few on there selling blanks. Get in touch with some of these guys: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=1&_nkw=guitar%20body%20blank&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m283 A

18.
Oh dear, I didn't realise you wanted it sold like that. I've already sawn the headstock off, painted it green Hammerite with a pink mirror scratchplate and fitted those EMC soapbars we discussed. Still two of the bridge saddles are original............
and if you put some pointy bits on it and get the industrial sander to it I'll take it A
19. I know what your talking about bluejay. I intonate so the note is ON the dots so you should finger just behind the dots. See here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/159580-how-do-you-intonate-your-fretless/page__fromsearch__1 A
