Nice and simple logic Just did it sitting down myself (phnaaarr) and its more balanced. If you unreverse the cut outs for the neck and scollops in the body I think your onto something. Basically offsetting it the otherway. As for necks. CH Guitars on ebay do a nice fretless jazz neck. Ive got one and its a very nice smooth play for not alot. Again it looks like someone has taken a razorblade to a photo and cut the shape out!! And again it just goes to show that theres not alot in guitars really. Just a hell of alot of diminishing returns. A

I had this problem. Its something to do with 'googleads'. If you hover over the back button the pop up should show a link with that name in it. Mine was sorted when I reformated my comp. I didnt do it because of that though! Unfortunatley I dont know how you can cure it. Deleting cookies etc doesnt cure it. At least you now know why A EDIT: A work around is to right click on the thread you want to read and 'Open in new tab'. That way you just close the tab down when finished and your back at the original page A
Agreed, a very underrated rhythm section! It's been a joy to have YouTube around to be able to see so many of their gigs that I was too young to see and it was such a shame that Partridge broke down and stopped performing live because of all the bands that have reformed over the years, XTC would be one I'd love to see the most make a return
Again I'll agree with all that. I was too young to see them too. The greatest pop group that never was. Unfortunatly Andy and Colins later stuff wasnt up to much IMO. They ran out of steam (soul coal ). They've parted ways now so its all over. And here he is on a very nice fretless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAaxZPjbrVQ A
Yeah apparently Schaller and Gotoh are developing their own bricks on strings to fill this much neglected niche. Needless to say Hipshot is developing an ultralite version
Ritters come with a gold plated one from the Great Wall of China A
Good call my friend! would love to see that bass in action. I am having a new unmarked ebony fingerboard put on a bass by a reputable luthier only ., £75 !!. I think that is a great price considering I was quoted £300 by a big-named UK company. Find a fretted you love, find another £75. Hey presto.
Thats a good price! I wouldnt mind his (Or her, you never know) details please and an apraisal of the finished job since I have similar plans. A

converting a right handed double bass to a lefty
apa replied to jojoagogo234's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Call me nieve but couldnt you just turn the bridge 180deg or is the front contour asymetric too? A -
Ha! So people actually read those sigs!! Frankly I have no idea what it is. I was given it in bits by a work mate who was in a band about erm 20 years ago. He'd recorded in Simon Guthries (Cocteau Twins) studio. Funny how a pop group could be made to sound like an 80's synth band but I digress. All I had was a defretted neck, 4 odd machineheads and a bridge. Made the rest myself and refretted it. Scratch made plate and a very cheap pickup. Then went to town with 3 or 4 rattle cans. Bearing in mind I dont think Id even picked up a guitar before. Saw a Precision and desided thats probably what it was. Its a short scale with standard strings cut to length. Hey I was young and nieve Its tucked under the bed now and 'doesnt count'. Its never had a string change in all those 20 years and actually makes quit a nice thuddy dead sound and considering all the above its quit a rich one too. Looking at it with more educated eyes it seems to have a bit of everything in it. Ray head, P body with a bit of J offset at the bottom and SG horns. And its got a zero fret with one long string retainer across all the strings. For some reason I have a feeling it may have been a Kay but if anyone recognises it it would be nice. Theres not alot to go on since the plate is my own design. Why wanna buy it? Its a one of a kind A

What pups (if any) to replace standard jazz
apa replied to Rowley Birkin QC's topic in Repairs and Technical
Another Jretro fan. Id also go for wizards if you where to replace them. Ive got 64s in a fretless with the jretro and just put a set of 84s in a VM. Love both. The 64s are smooth and rich but still clear and the 84s are nice and strong. A -
One that often springs to mind is Colin Moulding from XTC, not ever one to blow your socks off technique-wise, but could pen a nice bassline and formed a very underrated songwriting partnership with Andy Partridge
Absolutely. One of my heros is Colin. Beautiful stuff. And Ill give a nod to Terry Chambers, exellent drummer. A

converting a right handed double bass to a lefty
apa replied to jojoagogo234's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Gave my righty brother, who doesnt play any instrument, a bass to hold one day and he imediately did so lefty. He said it just seemed logical so his right hand would be doing all the fiddly bits. I am right handed but use a mouse left handed with right handed buttons. The logic? The left button is closest to my index finger. It also means I can mouse and write at the same time Tried a bass lefty once and it felt the most bizzare thing ever! If you take the logic further: We righties eat left handed. The fork which is the manipulator and dextrus one is in our left hand. The right handed knife cuts and shovels and thats about it. The knife is there for the fork. A -
One thing really bugs me about Bass designs..............
Heh. Its the jack which, to me, renders very expensive leads as just that, expensive. For all their wonderful joints and low oxygen wire etc the jack has the tiniest point of contact with that little, bent metal tang that is surely a weak point which ruins the chain.
Absolutely. Theres probably microns of surface contact. A split cylinder with a raised internal contact groove would prove a much more effective contact. The extra expense would be pennies.
Get some of that modelling clay that hardens in the air. Mold it round the edges of the socket to your aesthetic pleasure and paint. I suspect if you apply a thin layer of oil first then you could remove the hardened clay easily if required later. If your nut keeps coming undone then apply threadlock. You can get it in Halfords.
I like your thinking Milliput - Thats the stuff A -
Thats a bit OTT for me. Whats wrong with a brick on a string tied to the bottom strap pin? A
There's a "music" scene in Japan where both male and female performers dress in the outfits more associated with the bubblegum pop acts that clog TV and radio there, but where the music played is mostly alternative/indie or rock/metal, although there are some dance acts associated with the trend. It's seen as being a comment on the elder consumers of the music and imagery of the pop acts, and the almost exclusively male run media outlets responsible for creating the pop product. As with many of these scenes, you'll often see those involved in, and followers of, this form of social commentary/subversion congregating in the public parks in Harajuku.
Hmm Ill have to use that one on the missus if she ever catches me. Oh sh*t did I say that out loud!!!! A
At the risk of sounding like I'm at debate club at school... Jack sockets don't bug me at all. To me, there's something comforting and reassuring about the familiarity of a tried and tested design. I don't find the nut/thread obtrusive in the slightest, it's not as if it's the size of a door knob is it? It's easy to fit, easy to adjust within acceptable tolerances and they're available just about anywhere should you need to source a replacement. I had to go to Dundee Maplin to get a replacement barrel jack for instance, because Aberdeen didn't stock them! The pursuit of aesthetics (which is rarely objective in its nature) isn't a good reason to reinvent the wheel. What efficiency savings are we making here? Are barrel jacks easier to fit when it comes to assembly? No, not in my experience anyway. Are barrel jacks more sturdy? Perhaps physically, but when they fail repairs take longer and are more expensive (barrel jack sockets cost more to manufacture and therefore purchase and take longer to remove and replace). Also they're far too long to top load a guitar/bass with. You say the nut/thread of the jack socket affects the ergonomics of the instrument. What makes it unergonomic? Do you hurt your hand on it? Is it difficult to insert the jack plug? The jack socket is tried, tested, reliable and ubiquitous and as such, I'm a big fan of it.
And at the risk of sound a bit too serious about a lazy Sunday post I agree that the standard jack socket does have a certain charm. It does its job and like I said in my original post I understand the economics etc of it all. But how does Mr Ritter justify that? I didnt however specifically mention or advocate the barrel socket as the answer.I mearly stated that the front face was an improvement over the nut and thread. I couldnt agree more with your statement "The pursuit of aesthetics (which is rarely objective in its nature)".These......... for example are a work of beauty in themselves since they have beauty through function. The pursuit of aesthetics (which is rarely objective in its nature) However if we had not kept analysing rather than reinventing the wheel then it would be cartwheels on Ferraris would it not? Where would the lighter and therefore more economical alloys be? So coming back to the socket. There is nothing I wish or feel the need to change about the working parts. Thats the function element and dont tamper with the hole or its size. Thats fine as it is, another functionality. However, and this is a little tenuous but still in my mind valid, when you offer your jack to the the said orofic you are presented with a protrution. Not the best thing to see when you are about to make an entry. What you need for an efficient and easy entry is a guide of some sort. Something which indicates the way. Mother nature usually has the answer. Consider the lilly. The standard jack socket in relation to the rest of the guitar has been left behind. The original fenders were developed with a beauty which came from funtion. The contouring of the later Precisions and the Jazzes etc but to leave the jack in limbo? The same could be said of the machine head elephant ears. Far better and finger friendly contoured designs have come along since but thats a bit too Fender [s]bashing[/s] specific and I didnt intend to go that root. Anyway Mrs APA's hair is still looking nice A -
