1.
I know it's a silly Q and most of you will cringe at the thought but I want to cover a bass body with fabric (perhaps upholstery fabric). How would I go about it? Does anyone know any online instructions on how this might be done? Anyone got an old p-bass body that they don't want that i can do this to?
I havent a clue but I would imagine it to be very difficult to make the fabric mould around the contours of a bass body. Cutting it to do that would be tricky in novice hands. If its patterned where would the patterns meet when trimmed etc etc. Then there is the issue of where to seam it. The moto here I think would be "Dont just do it, think about it". Your best bet? Go to your local College Design dept. and ask them. They would love to get thier teeth into that sort of thing. A Edit: for being distracted before hitting post button and being superseeded
 2.
All round cheap and cheerful. You get what you pay for. I've vowed never to by any crumbly screws off them ever again... they seem to make them out of silver coated cheese.
But are you talking about the necks as well or just their emmental hardware? Because I would say the two are like chalk and............. well you know the rest A
 3. Yes. Ive got a fretless rosewood Jazz neck and its a beautifull player. Came with no side marks and the only thing I did was round the sides off a touch and a quick fine sand and lemon oil. Fitted the pocket on my no name body perfectly. Unfortunately they dont sell them anymore. Thier stock seems to be going down in general to! Id love to get a paddle head fretless Jazz but cant find one for love nor money!! A
 4. Apparently they have Duncan Designed pickups!! The 'Heartbreaker' is pretty cool as well. Actually as cheap novelty guitars go these arent bad looking http://www.musicwarehouse.co.uk/daisy-rock/668-daisy-rock-heartbreaker-bass-black.html A
 5.
I read a magazine interview with Hooky a few years ago where he said he donated it to a charity.I'll dig it out and confirm.
Sue Ryder? A
 6.
Not at all! Just that people pay a premium for the B/B necks (I have a couple myself) and so the contrariness of merrily ripping it right off earns a respectful smile IMO.
Cool Well the neck had been 'mucked about with' so it wouldnt (and didnt) fetch a premium so no loss to the great Bass world. A
 7.
Not at all! Just that people pay a premium for the B/B necks (I have a couple myself) and so the contrariness of merrily ripping it right off earns a respectful smile IMO.
And your respectful smile was matched by a knowing wink Sir A
 8.
Look forward to seeing the end result! Needlessy butchering a nice blocked and bound neck earns extra points as well, I like it when people aren't too precious about these things
Is this what you call being damned with faint praise? A
 9.
But WTF are you DOING to it?! Is there some crazy build diary I've missed?
That was taken on the CNC bed as I machined off the maple fretted fingerboard. Ive posted it here because the question was asked about whether VM Jazzes had inlay or printed blocks. I then stuck a rosewood fretless board on it. Unfortunately I havent done a diary but the end result should be interesting Its going to be an Uber Deluxe Full Fat XXL Jazz All will be revealed but we digress from the thread A
 10.
They're pennies from Screwfix. The trick with fitting them is to use a new drill bit and have the drill (preferably a hand-drill) turning backwards with a masking tape layer to prevent wood splitting. Making the assumption too that the OP is talking about a bigger plate than a normal 4 hole job.
OK I give up! I cant find them on the screwfix website A
 11.
They are fine. Most of the stress comes from the shear stress perpendicular to the direction that the bolts are pointing in; the vertical component of the force which stops it from coming off the body (and what the ferrules are designed to distribute over a larger area) really isn't that much. Unless you have a lot of strings on your bass I think 6 bolts is probably overkill anyway.
I concur However when doing a quick search it seems everyone sells ferrules in 4's which brings the op back to square one!! A
 12.
I think people just generally use ferrules for necks with more than 4 bolts.
Do neck ferrules really work that well? (An obviously retorical question since lots of very good manufacturers use them) It never seems the most robust way compared to a plate (puts engineers cap on) A
 13.
Yikes, what had happen there?
You should see my fingers but man it was one hell of a shredding fest But seriously I machined the fingerboard off and its now sporting a rather nice rosewood fretless. Its my latest project but thanks for your concern mooz A
 14. And the answer is............................................................ Appolagies for quality and its actually a rebadged 5 string neck but Im 99.9% sure its a VM neck A
 15. And the mystery is solved Appolagies for the quality and a small caveat: Its a 5 string neck and was rebadged but Im 99.99% sure its a VM neck! A
 16.
I'd like to use that as a quote at some point in some promotional material, if thats ok with you?
Fill yah boots A
 17.
well, there may well be a reprieve. It looks like I'm getting a fretless Jazz. It's nowhere near as pretty, but it feels great and sounds great... I still prefer bigger necks but... well, I've got to give this one a whirl. Soundwise it's pretty much what I want so... who knows, I may even have to let the Precision go (never!!! )
1001 x A
 18.
INdeed! I just edited it.. it does NOT leave any residue. Thank you! That piece of ebony... is HARD! That's all I can say. In fact I thought of trying to use it for this (since it was meant to make a thumbrest to start with, just a simpler style one)... but I started playing with another lump of wood and the results were pretty disappointing so I'm not destroying that lovely wood you gave me erm, you know what I mean!
What goes on in Basschat stays in Basschat A
 19. If Rich doesnt then pop it in the post and Ill have a few made for you Jose (Im being serious btw) Erm hows that piece of ebony doing these days? A Oh and dont you mean "leaves NO residue"!!
 20.
Is that a wheel of fortune truss adjuster? If it is . Wheel of fortune on a cheap bass?
My very cheap and nasty Kay (probably) has a wheel of fortune adjuster at the heel. A
 21.
Be different drop another P pickup in it.
Or go the whole hog and shave a bit of the neck width, contour the body a bit, maybe to on side, slip 2 single coil pups in it and have individual volumes for each one then you'll have a decent bass A
 22. Bought a set of Lindy Fralin jazz pickups from Dave with exellent coms and postage, couldnt be better. Thanks Dave, looking forward to trying them out cheers A
 23. Ive always thought the names summed up the cultural differences very well.......... TALKbass - Ok guys lets talk some serious bass. BassCHAT - Lets have a nice little chat about basses shall we if that ok with you? And I agree with Skankdelvar. Definatly a sign of those who have little to give themselves. A
 24.
If your still after some, I reckon you might get it for the best price at an upholsterers, or a carpet shop. Failing that, screwfix or Toolstation do it for about 4 or 5 quids. Places like B&Q are just too expensive.
Exactly what I was going to say. I covered a cabinet about 15 years ago and its still going strong. I went to a local upholsterers who kindly gave me a 1/3 full spray can of industrial strength upholstry adhesive. So if you flutter your baby blues at the nice upholstry man he may give you one for free A
 25. Would it not be more prudent to buy a J body, fit that neck and route for a P pup under the scratch plate. Then you have a reversable mod on the J body (The P body will be scared for life) and ready made routing and controls for 2 pickups. A PS - Hi its been a while
