I agree about the Roto ground wounds. I had to look very closely to make sure they werent rounds in the wrong pack!! I would recommend GHS Bright Flats. They are grounds dispite the name. Not THAT bright but brighter than Chromes. but still have a bit of a tw*** and feel very smooth too. A
I'd like to add "memories". I didn't like Abba at all when their stuff was in the charts. When I hear it now, I quite like it, mainly because I remember what I was doing when it was on the radio first time round.
Yep Im the same with Duran Duran and to a lesser degree Abba. I came back to both with fresh ears and so heard them in a different and un biased way. It wasnt cool to like either when they were new in my day. Now I can like them. As for your point of memories that is a big factor however is it just the relevant tracks that you have a memory for or would the same thing happen with an obscure album track youve never heard before?
how does 'educated' fit for those who are just contradictory , I know a few people who would like X but because ( insert name, relative, enemy etc here ) like X ,they will declare a preference for Y .
I would agree with that. There is an element of 'Im going to like this because you dont'. But does that really cound as liking? If your doing it for other reasons. Its difficult to proove and perhaps we should dismiss that reason as a valid one? The same goes for 'I like it because you do'. A
I like a variety of stuff. Basicaly I'm a "Rocker". But I'd be equally as happy slipping on a suit and Trilby and sitting in a dance hall listening to Glen Miller or the Rat Pack. Or laying back and chilling out to Tom Paxton or Donovan. Or air drumming (I'm sad to admit) to a classic Motown track. I like some thrash, some NWOBHM, some Ska, some blues, a little Jazz, some newer stuff like Foo Fighters, Funeral for a Friend, The Gaslight Anthem, Biffy Clyro... I even like the odd Erasure track and a bit of Rap. It's always been a problem for me with being in bands - I like a lot of stuff, but not enough to commit to it. I can knock out Iron Maiden Basslines without breaking a sweat - but I dont want to do that kind of band. Same applies to Blues and a lot of other Genres. Still don't know after 20 years of playing if I have musicaly "found" myself or if I ever will. There's a lot of things I like playing but I can't write similair stuff. Finding muso's the same is a pain - someone always secretly wants to go this way or that. This situation has left me with a dep guitarist and the task of finding a replacement for him because he wants to play heavier stuff. I wish I could just say "yeh I want to be like Genre X or Band Y". Damn me and my varied musical background.
Ah now this is because youve been or have educated yourself in a variety of musical styles like alot of us on here. Since your tastes have changed then you still want to listen to some of them on a casual basis but on the more 'serious' level of playing you want a different challenge. Damn Im good. Its like the psychiatrists chair A
Nope, we've always had pretty much the same friends. I think he's a lot more influenced by our older brother than I am though.
For 'influenced' read 'educated'. Aha my theory is still holding up A
You mean no 12-page debate?
I know. Bit disappointing isnt it. Well its your fault anyway for coming up the the answer to the big eternal question after the 3rd post!! You could have saved it till the 3rd page A
I know I like what I do music wise because it was always playing when I was little, but my twin brother doesn't like any of the same music as me so I can only speak for myself.
Thats a very interesting point from a very good case. You may be similar in many ways however your still both individuals so the personal makeup figures. Im also assuming you both had different friends etc?
That's a bingo. Though often I find it's a case of just 'getting' something - used to hate indie-mope-rock, but now that I'm in a band that does just that I suddenly see the appeal.
Which you could also call Education. Hmmmm Id forgotten about that aspect. Actually I think thats the kernal of all this. Its what you understand! THATS why you like something. From 'I like a bit of a tune' up to the deepest Jazz progression. During your formative years your most suceptable to influences and therefore your understanding so like whats most out there. Ah well Im glad we've cleared that one up Thanks guys A

Why do we like what we like and hate what we dont? Is it a collective gene that bonds all Heavy Metal fans? But theres often no other bond between them. Is it because its what we grew up with? But I like the Who who were at least 10 years before my time at their peak. Why is there such a fine line? Green day yes, Nervana No. To the initiated they are poles apart but to the uninitiated it all sounds the same. The current top ten has plenty of beat. Is it that? Country and Western has plenty of beat. If I grew up today would I like this stuff on Radio 1? If I grew up in the 50's would I like the stuff on the Home Service? Why dont we grow with the music? Most people are 'stuck' in thier formative years or before. I hated Duran Duran back in the day. I really appreciate the musicianship and they are damn fine tunes. I like Led Zepplin. Fantastic Blues. I hate muddy Waters. Boring old Blues. I just like a nice tune. Ah this one brings back some many memories. Is it moulded into you as you develope? I used to like Thrash. Im more a Miles Davis guy these days. Lots of contradictions to offset the stock answers there. Personally I think its a mix of cultural influences and your own personal makeup. A
Coat return appreciated. My attempt at a light-hearted sales thread has not gone as planned. Sort of. So - to return to the sale - anybody want to buy my 2008 MIA Precision?
I thought everyone saw it as a bit of a light hearted thread. I certainly did Oh and erm no thanks Im good for Precisions thanks. A
Well, my plan was for a "teaser" campaign where I drip-fed information over a period of time to periodically re-kindle interest and bump the thread. Seems I misjudged it. Steve
Well you may have misjudged it (we're a bit too clever by 'alf here sometimes ) but hey how many bumps have you got. Its been amusing oh and heres your coat back A
Really? The East circuits are amongst the better on-board ones, but they are always constrained by what you can do and still fit the result in the typical bass control cavity whilst being efficiently powered by a 9V Battery. The tone controls on your amp shouldn't have any of these limitations.
The easts havent got the full range of most amp eq's but what they can give you is a close run. You can shape your sound enough for me and more so you can leave your amp alone. Which I would say is a good thing. A

no brainer as far as im cconcerned. Wortth it for just the mid sweep. I dont like vvt so even better. Also doing what you want on the bass rather than the amp is even better A

Im intending to respray a body which is poly. Ive researched and apparently you can spray nitro straight onto it although that seems to be a little debatable!! Question is Im not too fussed about using nitro so is there a stock rattle can other than nitro I can use thats compatable with a poly finish? Id rather not take it back to bare wood. cheers A

Nice vid of the manufacturing there Ou7shined. Interesting points where the outer wrap is fed by hand and the hand packing. Thats some very fiddly labour intensive work. No wonder the're so bleedin expensive for what you get!!!!! And its also a standard company style vid since they show you all the QA first A
Just as well you've never used Kim Webber, if I were you i'd avoid at all costs. A couple of years ago I needed a new nut on one of my basses, so gave Mr Webber a call. Seemed like a nice enough bloke on the phone, quoted me £20 and told me i could drop the bass off that afternoon. When I got to his place (about an eight mile drive) Mr Webber told me he'd made a mistake on the phone, and that the cost would actually be £30. He then proceeded to tell me that he would also have to give the bass a set up (not optional) at an additional cost of £60. I decided at this point that i'd heard enough and tried to make my excuses and leave, but Mr Webber pushed on, saying that I obviously couldn't afford his services but was too embarrassed to say so. I was now heading for the door, but even then he kept on at me, saying he would knock £10 off of the set up price if I took some music lessons from his son. In the end I just said I'd think about it and get back to him and did a runner. Luckily i've since managed to find an excellent chap just one street over from Mr Webber who does fantastic work at a very reasonable price (it's the guy that Jaywalk Guitars in Street use), but i still wonder from time to time if Mr Webber treats all his customers like he treated me, because if he does, i'm amazed he's still in business.
Thats actually a bit erm....... creepy I know Jaywalk so if I do need anyone I know where to go. Thanks for the heads up silentbob A -

Mark welcome to BC Good luck with your endevours to be a Luither. I can think of nothing better than making your hobby your living. Taking a course on Luithering, setting up your own company, offering set ups that suit individuals and simply stating what you do would be my prefered route I think. But you take your own route. And yes the 'oiling the pots' hit me straight way to!!! This really does sum up what we're talking about here Mark. I first came across your ads when your six string conversion from a 7 string was highlited here. Reading your descriptions of 'pro set up' and 'ready to gig' then looking at the pictures of half a pickup and M6 nuts under bridges said it all to me. So when I see your other ads written in the same vain I have little faith Im afraid. Your actually between a rock and a hard place. An 'ordinary bloke' who does that to guitars? Id take a sideways glance and think 'Good luck with that one mate'. Some one 'doing Professional* Guitar setups' and charging for it? Id critisise them till Im blue in the face. Make your mind up time Mark. I mean this in the most positive way possible. Still, I look forward to reading your advice in the Repairs section. May years ago I was a structural engineer. Went out the game then for a bit of extra cash I did house extension plans. After a few I realised I'd been out of the building regs and British starndards for too long so I stopped. If I needed to make a living from it I would have gone back to colledge and invested in some CAD software. I didnt have to so I didnt. *Your charging for the service therefore you take the responsability just like any other trade. Andrew P Asher (Noodler Extraordinaire)
