1.
Weird! Why? Thanks for the string info. I'm also participating in the Innovation trial offer - I actually had a loan of their Golden Slaps (fnarr! fnarr!) but didn't get a chance to try them, hoping to get a new nut and another chance before long.
I suppose it saves you from putting it on its stand while not playing etc. A
2. OMG This does it for me every time. Fantastic driving music. Put the windows down, turn it up and cruise around your local neighbourhood. My fav bit if the drums. That fab sloppy but tight style (If you know what I mean.) The mans a genious. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBLeACT_KBQ A (I know this isnt a Bacharach love fest but what the hell)
3. Cut the heads off the screws, super glue them into the black pickguard holes (Or get the bassdoc to make one with no holes at all) then use that double sided tape you have. You wont be making the holes loose when you do take the guard on and off all the time either. A
4. Try a scrap yard. Loads of old fencing and grill type stuff lying about around those places for pennies. I got one for my home made 410. Spayed it up and bent the edges back to fit into the hole. A
5.
Oh, I don't know about that. Townsend became disillusioned with Moon's limitations as a drummer. Why Townsend had Kenney Jones replay some of Moon's parts on both the "By Numbers" and "Who Are You" albums.
I always thought it quit odd that Kenny Jones was used to cover Moon. They couldnt be more different drummers. Replace a 'Lead drummer' with 'Mr Metronome'. Kenny went back quit a way as friends with Townshend anyway. Just to clarify what I meant: Saying "I never rated Moon as a drummer" is quit different to saying "By the time we made Quadrophenia he was past it" Two very different statements. The later I would understand if he had said it but the former, which he did say, is a bit daming. A As an aside I thing By Numbers is an absolutely brilliant album full of introspective stuff that was brave to produce considering thier status at the time.
6. I watched it too. One of my altime (Goosepimples) albums for my all time fave group. I had to put the original vinyl on and had an emotional hour or so 'The real me' and '5:15' do it every time! I then did a bit of googling about stuff. 'Chad' (Real name Terry Kennett) the kid on the album was one of my first. He died in 2011. This was prompted by the final credit on the program. I tried to find stuff on him but nothing past the actual use of him. He went back to being a 'sprayer' after his 15mins of fame. I finally tracked some info on a mod forum. Some woman posted that she used to live next door to him and he was an ungrateful old sod who scrounged and had all his scraounging mates around. He died of Emphasima I think. The other very interesting thing was about the recording of the sound effects (Which you dont get most of on the CD reissues btw). From memory: They bunged a driver a wad of cash to blow his whistle in Padington station and recorded it. Doing so is a sackable offence when not needed. They tried recording the trains going past but they didnt sound right since they needed the whistle as well. So they stood on the line as the train aproached which made the driver whistle then they stepped back and recorded the lot! Pete went down on the beach in Wales somewhere and recorded himself walking along on the pebbles as he sang. They couldnt get a decent 'AM' emulator for the news broadcast so they bribed John Curle (A high profile news reader at the time) to say the speach about the Brighton riots live during the news and recorded it with a bad AM reception. The riots never happened when he read it! They stuck 4 very expensive mikes on poles in the sea to record the waves for the quadrophonic effect. They never used it and had to wait 8 hours for the tide to come int to record it then had to wait 8 hours for the tide to go out so they could get them back. We live in tame times. As for the doc. It was really enlightening to hear from the horses mouth how the story pans out and Petes intentions for how it should be. As for the 'I never rated Moon as a drummer' bit. Any Who fan knows that all through his career he has talk an awefull load of cr@p in regular intervals. Dont take that comment at all seriously!! As for the other two progs after. The film - God thats crap these days. Very low budget with little care for when it was actually set (Half the cars in the streets were 70s!!). I remember watching it wide eyed as a kid thinking this was sooooooo cool. The concert was prety poor to. Anyone els notice how tame Pino was on the solos! Very disapointing in deed. A
7. There seems to be alot of this about (M D Philips included). I have no problem with people doing stuff like this. Its great. I love it. Its interesting. I do stuff like this myself. But when they try and sell it like its some kind of amazing bit of kit thats worth somehting it realy gets my goat. When will people learn that this stuff isnt worth anything. Make it, enjoy making it, play it, look at it then, show it off stick it in the corner and feel a sense of acheivement and move on. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I wouldnt dare consider selling any of my bitsa's as some kind of collectable gods gift to music!! A
8.
One other thing about the Stagg is why does it have a strap button at the heel of the neck. I'm presuming its for a strap ( the clues in the name ) but are you meant to wear a shoulder strap with it - and has anyone dared to do this in public !
Its for a strap that goes around your neck like sax players etc. A
9.
It'd keep the sun off your head anyway. Thanks for the strings info. Strings on mine are, well, OK...feel like the flats on my EB but don't sound very double-bassy.
Yep thats the babies. They are (apparently/allegedly etc) the bench mark string for piz / jazz etc. So there is nothing out the ordinary with them. Its not like your first electric bass strung with flats and your wondering why it sounds so dull. However I must warn you I know squat about double bass strings so dont take my word for it please. I got all my stuff from Talkbass DB forum. That killed a few dark rainy evenings I can tell you. Its immense (In the true sense of the word). I got the medium ones (3885,0). Middle of the middle of the DB string world. Probably a good start. They sound pretty good to me and they come in a big box to. Its twice the size of electric bass strings. Which is cool (Thats how much a noobie I am ) EDIT: These are just like flats in feel and construction to but are a hell of a lot better quality. A
10.
That looks great. The ceramic sombrero behind the bass in the pic confused me for a second... These? http://www.stringmail.co.uk/dbass.htm
Ill double check the pack when Im home. Oh and its a very big wooden plate btw A
11.
Likewise...I also stuck a piece of foam under the strings south of the bridge. Haven't had a problem with end pin rattling. The ferrules into which one screws the spacing/leaning/support bracket thingy were loose but a drop of Evostik sorted that. What sort of strings did you upgrade to, and how different was the sound/feel?
A bit of foam!!! Have you no taste sir!! THIS is what you need http://basschat.co.uk/topic/160704-accessorise-your-eub-with-this-seasons-must-have-string-damper/page__fromsearch__1 I put Spirocore's on. Now Im a total newb to uprights so I have no idea whether they sound relatively good or not. All I know is they do sound nice to me. They should do at the price Frankly the strings that my Stagg came with where absolute rubbish. Had lumps and bumps in them. Actually one thing to note also is the string length. The Stagg has a very long bridge to anchor distance and the Spirocores only just fitted. A
12. I found my Stagg to be pretty good quality to. Nothing broke, nothing miss aligned. The only things I had to do was file the nut amnd bridge slots down. Which is part of a set up anyway surely! The only real mod was to wrap the end post with some foam sheet to stop it rattling inside the body. Other than that I did nothing. Oh and a new set of strings. Show me any bass for £300 that you dont do any or all of that to anyway straight out the box. It sounds 'like' an acoustic double bass. It isnt one so not all the complex tones are there. (As said above). Im realy happy though. Its great fun. Only issue Ive heard of with them is the machine heads are a little delicate and can break but they are stock open style elephant ears with slightly different posts. Stagg do replacements anyway. One gripe? Mine is supposed to be black sparkle. You can count the sparkles on one hand A
13.
Some basic info on Fender's site: http://www.fender.co...ar-setup-guide/ And some practical info here: http://www.garywilli...etupmanual.html You don't have to change the strings, but it may be an idea if you don't know how old the current strings are.
Big +1 for Garry Willis. A
14.
I love this
Ive loved that track for years. Always pops into my head from time to time A
15. Your in estimed company with Chris Moyles and a Young Rowan Atkinson Im intreaged by those strings. I was going to start a trivial thread about the thickest string ever but I think Ive found my answer. What gauge are they? Specialy made I assume? Whats the construction? A
16. You do realise that that little jar is also jammed full to the brim with Higgs Boson Partical goodness A
17. Ive got one. Its got a very nice Fishman pre with Phase button and tuner. Its knobs rather than sliders which I like. The neck is a proper J. Build quality is exellent especially the neck. Of course it needs plugging in, its an acoustic bass The only thing you need to watch is the bridge piezo. When I changed strings the bridge saddle was very loose. When I restrung and tried it again the G was almost dead. I had to fiddle with the ribbon piezo under the saddle it to get it to work again. This has been reported before so watch for it. Oh and I took the tacky gold coloured scratch plate off. Looks better for it. A bit of lighter fluid and a razor blade did the job A

Blingray build

That finger board is absolutely beautifull A
19. That is really cool Who ever did it give them my compliments! A
20. A bit late in the day since youve already bought it but a quick shufty around your local scrap yard can uncover some jems especially in mesh material and all for a pound or two. A
21. 15 minutes! You need a lie down my son. Take it easy. We dont want you breaking out in a sweat now do we. Have you told your GF? She will be well impressed and will probably make your tea for you. Pad it out to 20mins and you'll be on a promise. What a hero Same time next year? A

Dot removal

Making a defretted and dedotted fingerboard blemish free is some task! What ever your filling the fret cuts with you can use on the side dots surely? A
23.
Been tempted to pull my T-bird apart and route it out for that. Isn't it WoTs yoke that has the between the poles. Can't mind the name. Fender, a Signature, Sunburst with a tort plate IIRC.
Yes thats the one. There was a big teaser thread where we all had to guess what he had coming A
24. YES This is something that Ive been wanting to do myself on one of my babies. Basically you will be 'Between poles' which is not a bad thing at all. I believe it give a slightly more mellow tone. Musicman did a special for, I think, Ernie Ball himself (Im probably close but no cigar) and there is a Fender one you can get to with it. Having said all that you will have to look at the routing and overall spacing of yours since it woll be a bespoke set up. Good luck if you do do it and would like to know the outcome A EDIT: I was going to mention the rail style pickups in which case it wouldnt matter since there is no poles but forgot in my haste and Edward said it himself above
25. Ive got the rosewood fretless and its pretty good for the money. Good quality Maple neck and with a bit of rubbing down on the edges its a smooth player. No idea on a fretted one though soz. A
