Ive stuck this first in the Big Boys Club but thought it may apply equally here for any bass neck........ Ive really been enjoying my Stagg EUB but theres one anoying problem with it!! The painted back of the neck is very very sticky. Its making it very hard work to change position. Its not dirty and nor am I (well I am but thats another story!) The neck started out as a satin finish and was sticky. I thought it would get better but now that its polished its even worse. Is there a spray? Do I sand it back? do I spray paint it? Do I get the vasaline out? Help? cheers A

ive been having sleepless nights over just this problem since i bought the same set of status strings. The look exceptionaly long to me! I dont like the idea of the thick bit going around the post. Luckely the jazz these are going on is going to be a through body so this should solve the prob. Im sure status could make you a custom set but its a sod youve already fitted them. I think string manufactures should state the 'working length' of their strings taking into acount the increase in length when tensioned A
Ah in that case just fit a pair of appropriately sized carrots... everything sounds hot through a JE.
Nah Gerkins. Carrots are too thumpy for me ;-) A

It can be done :-) I did it on a ryder. Its evil stuff. I would recommend getting the leaves on the backing paper rather than loose. I wouldnt worry about the under finish as long as its sound. Give it a bit of a fine rub down to form a key but it must be fine because those few microns of leaf thickness will show everything underneath. Use PVA glue thined down about 80% glue to 20% water. Get one of those mini paint rollers that are fluffy. Paint the area about 2 leaves in size at a time. Lay the leaf on it. It took me quit a while to get the knack. If I knew what I was doing in the first place i would have needed 2 books for just the sides and head stock. I actually used 3!! The base colour makes a difference to the finished gold colour to. Put a clear coat over the top to protect. I got mine from here: http://www.goldleafsupplies.co.uk/ Just watch the postage. You have to ask for ordinary delivery. Its suprisingly cheap considering. Theres a few hints on the site too. Heres the finished artical: A

Since Andy of Wizard isnt doing specials anymore Im having to find an alternative for a set of Jazz 5ers. I was looking forward to a set of 84's but oh well.............. So what would you recommend? Im after something full and strong but not OTT. Nothing woolly though. Its a mindfield discribing tone but we'll give it a shot. Cost wise Im in the £100+ ball park and it would be even better if they were UK made. Ive had a look at the Demarzio sets but never heard them. Its going to be for a fretless btw. Size wise its not a prob. Its a project. Wadaya recon then?? cheers A

Ahhhh my first true love Every album, every single, every 12" all the rare stuff. Posters on the all, fan club member, birthday cards between the two of us (well the fan club secretary anyway). Sent her a beetle once because I thought she might like it and got a thank you card The early pre 'Its a mystery' stuff is pretty good if you like that sort of thing and the live album Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! is exellent. Its not the Toyah you probably know. Stuff like Ieya, Victims of the riddle, Blue Meanings, Danced. All good stuff. A EDIT: I still would

It just passed me by being just a few years before I got into music. I saw it as emporers new cloths. Most of it just sounded like 50's rock and roll on acid. Didnt do anything for me and still doesnt. Having said that. It kicked the doors open. Blew off the cobwebs. Made people realise that its about doing it for yourself and sod them all. It was more an attitude than music. Nothing to do with safety pins and mohekans etal. They were the for runners of some of the stuff I got into so I thank them. Ive also managed to keep some of those cobwebs they blew away too. Gentle Giant included Thank fooooooque it happened. Only problem is it doesnt travel through time well. Best not to try and do it now. A
Wasn't meant to - I was looking for a bit more "grunt" and didn't want the totally smooth, classic fretless tone - the "mwah" as it seems to be described in every fretless for sale thread! If you are looking for smoother, then yes, the Status are great, excellent value and great customer service - wouldn't knock them in any way!
No worries I didnt take it as you trying to put me off Was just a figure of speech since we like opposites. A
I tried the Status ones but found them too flat-wound. Great flats and great price but I was looking for a little more of a flat/round compromise. Now have Rotosound Pressure Wound and am really happy with them although I can see some slight markings on my ebony fretless board after about a year's use.
Thats not put me off I prefer the smoother finish of the GHS's to the almost still round Rotos A

Just ordered a set of the Status Half rounds. Looking forward to them A
I tried D'Addario XL half rounds once - I really didn't like them. I found them sticky when sliding. Has probably put me off wasting any money on this avenue in the future, so the only way I'll do any further experimenting is if I play a bass which already has them fitted.
I know what you mean but give them a week of playing and the sharp edges of the grinding wear off and they go nice and smooth. As an analogy I think of flats like sliding your finger over plastic and groungs as sliding your fingers over paper.

You see alot of talk about this round versus that round and which flats to use. Very little about the Ground/Pressure/Half wounds. I have fallen hook line and sinker for GHS Bright Flats. Their called 'flats' but are actually ground wound. Once thy've bedded in they are lovely and smooth with just a hint of resistance with the ribbing. They are perfect for me. Ive got them on my fretless Jazz. The sound is like nicely settled in rounds. Best of both worlds in my view. Ive also got a set of Roto ground wounds on my fretless ryder. Dont like them as much. Not as smooth and are a little brighter. Still nice strings though. Contemplating a set of someone elses in the near future but not decided whos yet A

fretless fretboard: natural finish or epoxy
apa replied to mentalextra's topic in Repairs and Technical
Ive got Ground Wounds on my rosewood fretless Jazz. A little bit of marking but no wear as such. They have a nice 'just played in rounds' sort of sound and after a short bit of playing are almost as smooth as flats. A -
To be fair Kim did it on instruction of the owner. He who pays the piper......... Its exellent advertising for him though. Not in the least to my tastes. A
