2. Is this still for sale?
3.
So fed up of him gurning over his piano in that christmas ad, wish someone would run in and slam his fingers in the bloody thing! I don't watch much tv but I'm already sick of the supermarket christmas ads and it's not even December. Christmas is my favourite time of year and these money grabbing *$&! bags really do make it that much less special when it finally arrives .
+1 - thank goodness for the mute button - can silence all of the ads when watching TV in real-time; on the PVR the 30sec skip button is even better! Christmas is a special time of year and I really dislike stretching the season. I mean we don;t want Spring to last for 6 months.
4. Darn missed ep 4 Austin - they are only on iPlayer for 6 days!!!
5. Very sad day. Saw him in Kendal just a year or two back. Tremendous musician.
6. I think that there is a significant cultural difference here. Just to point out, and my missus points it out often as she runs a tea room in a stately home, that in Britain people don't give tips to cafés, waiters, waitresses, etc. very often. She does point out that they give a tip to a coach driver on a day out but not to her and her team who prepare and serve the same people tea, sandwiches, cakes, etc. I now that in the US that tipping is expected at restaurants. I would say that probably explains the huge difference. I have never seen a band put out a tip jar at any gig.
7.
I thought it was really good. Not so hot on the singist. I agree, he's trying too hard and doesn't have that great a voice but maybe if he didn't try to be so gravelly, it would sound better. If I was to walk in to a bar a see these, I would stay! Good luck mate, I'm sure you will enjoy playing with this lot .
+1 Agree that the vocalist is the "marmite" here - he does try too hard sometimes. The live recording is reasonable quality - but the mix is a bit off - just too much vocal, not enough kick drum presence. Nice bass tone though - with some variation from song to song. Some of the pick ups seem to be just slightly off the right timing - a bit early IMHO. +1 to others on the inter-song chit chat - is a bit much - needs to be more polished.
8. There is a lot of stuff about this sort of thing in Sound On Sound and the associated forums. I'd add that someone will forget something and having spares will be vital. I'd get some general MIC wind covers to take out any wind from getting into the MIC signals - especially the vocals. You might even get some coloured ones to help the engineers distinguish one MIC from another. See: http://www.ld-systems.com/en/microphones/d-913-blk-windscreen-for-microphone-black/ Just make sure that whoever is taking on the sound engineering role at the desk is fast thinking enough to cope with the inevitable changes, issues etc.
9. I just didn't like the foot controls on my Digitech BP80 in a gig situation - having to press both simultaneously to bypass - was too hit and miss for me. But the use otherwise was good. I did some prep work in setting up my own patches and just referencing the patch number in the set list worked ok.
10. Have you checked Sound On Sound? http://www.soundonsound.com/readersads Mostly studio stuff but some PA, live kit.
11.
I dont understand people wanting to turn up louder than everybody else, surely they realise that doing so will create an terrible mix?
I put it down to a combination of ego and ignorance. Ego in terms of they think they are the main attraction and ignorance in terms of not understanding or wanting to understand the balance of sound as well as thinking somehow everyone else will be fine. All band members in my view should have some appreciation of the basics of PA and mixing. In my small experience they want to remain ignorant because when you try to explain you can see the shutters coming down and yet they expect miracles like its as perfect as when I'm playing at home on my own with the backing track. <mutter> must go and see the nurse now...
12.
Tina Weymouth.
+1
13. My local shop and I endorse all the great comments about Gary and Promenade Music in Morecambe. They have a great team. Always had great service, help, advice and a good deal.
14.
I think there are actually 2 albums. One is a new Gilmour album, and then there's a Floyd album that was started in 1994 and features the late Richard Wright. It's mostly instrumental too, which sounds cool. More exciting (for me), is the prospect of a new King Crimson album .
At least it has some Richard Wright on it, otherwise would it really be Floyd?
15. I have an Overwater by Tanglewood Classic J and a Yamaha BB425x - they are both great - different sound even though they both have a P/J set up. I'd say that the Yam has a more growly sound and the Classic J more mellow. YMMV - of course
16. I got one for the monitors as in a small gig with a loud drummer and vocalists wanting to hear themselves above the drummer we had a lot of feedback issues. There is little space to move stuff around. As we only have 1 AUX feed from our tiny desk there is only 1 monitor mix and so it only used 1 channel of the feedback destroyer. Then I got a second to put on FoH as we were getting some bounce back in some places off hard walls, floors, ceilings etc. But I don't use that as much. Both are Behringers bought second-hand.
17. OnSong. Though I have had a couple of PDFs I mainly have chord sheets from text files which makes it easier to change key if needed. Also now that I have an Behringer iS202 I can slot my iPad 2 in it and use it as a modelling set up (JamUp Pro) and have chord sheets on as well. The iS202 also lets me use a MIDI foot controller to adjust OnSong and/or JamUp.
18. We're replacing some of our Beatles covers with different Beatles covers, so out go: Can't Buy Me Love I want to hold your hand In come: I should have known better Things We Said Today Also looking at adding: Squeeze Box by The Who Hotel California Really also hoping to add: Brick House Play That Funky Music School's Out
19. So really you either looking at a better cable (stereo mini-jack to twin jacks or twin phonos) or a proper audio interface rather than a mere cable. For a cable then you are stuck with the mini-jack and if as you say it has come out then there are no locking versions so you could jury-rig something up with gaffer tape or position the MacBook and cable in better position - i.e. with more support underneath the mini-jack plug as it connects into the MacBook - like a small shelf. You might fashion something using Sugru around the mini-jack plug that helps fit around the connection to the MacBook body. If you are looking at just running out a stereo signal a small, lower-cost interface then there are lots but you may find that the USB, Firewire, Thunderbolt connection is just a prone to the same issues.
20. Thanks Tayste for the blog posts. I've had a Ampkit Link from early days - and always found it rather hissy. But now I've just bought a Behringer iS202 - and that is neat and about the same price as the Line6 Sonic Port. Used it in a rehearsal the other night. I listened to my bass via the headphones and gave the rest of the band sufficient of me in a monitor. The iS202 has two combo inputs with channel 2 switchable with a instrument input, and phantom power, you can also add an aux (e.g. a CD or record deck etc.) with Main L & R on a pair of jacks. Of course, it is iPad and uses the dock so not iPad4. The thing is I have a Behringer FCB MIDI foot board, and as the iS202 has MIDI built in - I'm going to see if I can use the foot board to control stuff in JamUp, OnSong, etc. Still wondering if I want to spend anymore on Amplitube or Ampkit - anyone any thoughts on comparisons? I'm liking it.
21. Band on The Wall, Manchester on the extra date on the Wednesday. I'd just missed the Tuesday. Phew!
22. Neat. Got my ticket for the extra date at Band on The Wall, Manchester. Looking forward to it.Though I very much doubt that they could possibly fit the "Family Dinner" crowd on the stage there.
23. +1 for everything! For me the key albums are Doremi and Space Ritual. But also Hassan I Shaba is very neat. Don't forget to get a Liquid-Len class light show!
24. Lots of +1 and Smile (lots) show that you're having a great time - even if inside you aren't. If you play a bum note (and we all do) then poker face time - don't give the game away to the punters. If possible mute the rig during tuning - just hate that tuning up cacophony. Make sure that you have a set list and can see it - especially if it dark. Try to drink a little water often - I use a bicycle drinks bottle - great for taking sips - and won't spill much if it is knocked over. Personally, I cannot eat much before - maybe it is standing with lump of wood around my shoulders - but afterwards….
