2. If a bunch of other musicians and the general public can't tell the difference, I'd say it's a victory whichever way you slice it Music isn't music until it reaches your ears - it's the result that matters, not how you get there.
3.
When I was 14, I was learning to play the double bass and reading at the same time. I was really terrible at reading. 3 years later I was given the chance to join a big band playing big band tunes of the 20s, 30s, 40s etc. When asked "can you read music?" I of course said "yes". When I went to my first audition, there were another 2 people going for the position and the person leaving was my old double bass tutor! I must have bluffed it enough because I got the part. I used to get old DB players coming up to me saying how much they enjoyed my playing but being absolutely honest I was making 75% of it up (I was playing the first note and making the rest up) Even today when I get asked to fill in with jazz bands and stuff I still bluff it completely. I can read the notes but have no idea how to read the individual notes properly with semi quavers and rests etc. I still regularly get lost half way through tunes. I've played in a weding/function/dinner dance band for the past 11 years so have developed a knack for making stuff up as we regularly have to play songs that we don't normally do. there is a big secret and I may divulge it someday but there are only a few patterns that you can actually play when covering other peoples tunes (except Frank Sinatra & Nat King Cole) which means that i can very rarely make a mistake when playing an unfamiliar tune. I'm not being a show off, I just discovered the pattern. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
You are my hero.
4. I can read music now. Badly. Well, sort of. To an extent. Ok, I'm terrible at it. But it's pretty handy for learning all the strange piano chord inversions Mr Waits uses. Hardest thing for me is desciphering the rhythms.
5. I love that P and I love that cab. Nice!
6. Ah, I'll have to leave them then I'm afraid, sorry.
7. I love the look but I don't think I'd want to touch it
8. Tom Waits, a truely unconventional genius. Zappa too is truely worthy of the title, although he's too out there for my taste.
9. There are several old Bassworlders still active on FB - it is a shame they don't cross pollinate but c'est la vie
10. That looks the dogs.
11.
I think there is a natural 'life expectancy' with a lot of forums, been through it with various ones over the years dating way back to the old days of usenet. Once you get to the point where it seems that most of the 'new' threads that come up you've actually already been involved in a few years earlier by totally different posters it gets less interesting and your post rate naturally drops. I've noticed my posts have really dropped off over the last 6 months or so. Back to original topic, anyone rememebr Chris who posted as Brycebytes or similar? used to have a little green alien as his avatar? Nice guy but can't recall the last time I saw a post by him. He was (think still is) in a rock covers band called Hush.
Brycie left for finnbass around the time the forums changed to Basstalk/Basschat. He's still in Hush I think.
12. 1x Encore 1x Avon 1 x Rockbass 2 x Fender 1 x Warwick 2x Status 2 x BC Rich 1 x Hohner 1x Ibanez 12. I currently have 2.
13. Are these stainless steel? If so, what guage?
14. I used to use the 2x12 GK Neo with a 1x12 on top, which was a great rig, very loud and punchy. The 1x12 on it's own would probably be ok for a low volume gig, but wouldn't cut it in anything rocky. 2 together would probably work nicely, though.
15. I used to hate pop music on principle. Love it now. The production is an art in itself.
16. Propagandhi - Supporting Caste. It's ace.
17.
Another good one is " I want what I paid for it" Why? it's six months older and had had one more owner lol! just accept depreciation
Yeah, but it's a bass, not a used car - using that logic, pre CBS Fenders would be going for a tenner on ebay.
18. I miss that HotTubesGrooves guy.
19. +1 on that! That rocks.
20. I'm still flogging this, but now at the knock down price of £390. Any takers? I paid £550 for this less than a year ago, and it's a great amp!
21. My first bass was a mid 90's Encore P. Cost about £80 I think. I still have it, the body at least, pretty much everything else has been changed:
22. Different forum, some very helpful members, very different atmostphere, but worth checking out. I enjoy both Finnbass and Basschat - the pace of finnbass is a lot slower though so I tend to spend more time browsing on here due to my short attention span
23. I think some mics have a phase reversal switch on them, not quite sure how this works, but I guess it's to combat this problem. Never realised it was due to the tiny delay between the sound leaving the cab and hitting the mic, though! Interesting.
24. This drill off the same site is really helping me get the staff in my head - it seems to encourage reading ahead too, which I'm sure will come in handy when it comes to sight reading: http://www.emusictheory.com/practice/speedNoteNames.html It's a bit quick for me at it's default speed setting, but I can manage it set to "50"... just about.
