1. I have a confession to make. "The Heart of Saturday Night" by Tom Waits has made me reconsider my blanket hatred of all things jazz.
2. Kind of defeats the object though, I mean, there are plenty of guitar forums out there as it is. What better place is there than basschat for basschat members to talk to other basschat members about non-bass stuff?
3. I gave up bass for over a year when I was out of a band. For me it's all about playing with other people when I play bass, so in that period I focused on guitar. Eventually got the bug again and now I'm back in the fold, as it were. Swings and roundabouts.
4. I don't get how having a guitar subforum would be a bad thing? It would probably be way quieter than the rest of the site, people with no interest in guitars wouldn't read it, people who do want to discuss guitars could do so with other guitar playing bassists. Where's the catch?
5.
I think that is the ideal for most bands, to stand out from your crowd without having to try too hard! Hopefully just being yourself should achieve that That's the trouble with having an agreed band look - there's nothing less cool than looking like you are trying too hard!!
Amen to that! I'm uncool, but I don't care that I'm uncool. This makes me cool, but acknowledging this makes me uncool again. And the cycle repeats forever!
6. I think there was very little in the way of vibrato used in the baroque period, too. Loads of trills and turnarounds instead. This is a cello concertio with a prominent solo cello part from 1.10 which is absolutely beautiful. It encapsulates baroque music to me, so you might find it inspiring.

envolope pedal

I remember for years thinking that the guitar effect at the end of Paranoid Android was called a "squelch" pedal thanks to a tab book.

envolope pedal

I heard it was a DOD FX25?
9. I don't really rate the concept of the band having a "look", but most of the shows I enjoy going to are punk or ska. Most of the time the band are wearing pretty similar clothes to the audience and no one cares - passion over fashion
10.
Antigua, the best Fender colour EVER, regardless of bass!
Rob, that is the single most disgusting thing I've ever seen, therefore I'm assuming you must have owned one of these at some point?
11. Pet Sounds. Saw Brian Wilson performing it live on telly last week and was reminded how lovely it is.
12.
Thing is, I'd be happy to accept that this sort of rehearsal is pretty fun, but I think the major issue (to me at least) is that they did this in a first rehearsal which is a bit squiffy to me!
That's probably the norm for them, though. I know a lot of people in bands that rehearse that way, all the time. Not bad bands, either. Likewise there are a few people I know who are almost militaristic in their rehearsal routine, and that's fine too. Probably more productive, but I think I prefer something in between the two myself. I think the biggest turn off in Bubinga5's experience is the fact they were messy. I mean, I like a smoke, but I can still nail a groove stoned so it's not really an issue - no talent is no talent at the end of the day, regardless of the atmosphere at practice
13. It sounded like they were having a good time - that's what it's all about to me. Depends what you want out of a band really.
14. I still have my first bass, an Encore P from the mid 90s. Decent shielding, pickups, status neck and a preamp made it more than giggable for a while, it was my main bass after I sold my Jazz. Good modding basses, basically
15. That sounds like my ideal first rehearsal to be honest! Sounds like it isn't for you, though. If it doesn't feel right at the first rehearsal, just cut your losses I say. Better than things not working out further down the road, more time wasted then.
16. Great review, up to your usual high standard OTPJ! Having played recent Squire guitars from the vintage line, I can believe the quality too. They've really come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, the choice for budding bassists or those who don't want to spend a fortune has never been better it seems.
17. My sound always has a touch of overdrive from my amp, which is essentially a Sansamp/poweramp combination. Just warms things up and adds a certain something to the sound, and when I dig in it adds a bit of "grind". Love it.
18. Seconded. Best sounding bass I've ever owned, and that includes a Status S2!
19.
i.m a fan of brownout, myself. hi wil, you might like this lot.
It's good, but I'm sorry to say it didn't make me sh*t myself.
20. I'm a fan of the brown note, myself.
21. Staggering sense of melody and he was the master of counterpoint. Big stretches needed on bass though I expect (for the cello suites), due to the tuning differences?
22. Happy chair approves of all this anthropomorphism.

Bit o' blues

I'd thought I'd try out the newly aquired Hohner B2A, strung with Status tapewounds. Bit of a bluesy thing with a walking bassline. sh*t guitar solo included as a free gift to you. Bit o' blues
24.
I think the major point is that there is something a lot more than just notes to music. Grasping that takes more than mere woodshedding. Herbie and Wayne Shorter are on a Joni Mitchell album called both sides now... on that album you can hear exactly what they are getting at in those sentiments there is not flash moment on the album but both of them can kill you from a hundred yards with just one note...
I like that phrase. Dave Gilmour and Jeff Beck spring to mind.

take care

Well, now it's been demonstrated that it was a scam, I can only say, what a c***.
