Well, Alex has been very helpful via PM and after some analysis of my needs, I think he's safely swayed me towards a compact. Just need to secure the funds now!

I just have a tendancy to overthink these things really

If only I hadn't missed the boat to try it

I've been scouting around, and actually having looked at the Barefaced site (GAS inducing) the double midget sounds like it might be worth saving up for. Alexclaber, do you have any pics of completed double midgets, and do you think one would equal a 4x10 with 300 watts pushing it?
6. Is this still going, and if so, do you have pics, how deep is it, and does it have a carry handle? Ta!
You totally missed the Compact hitting the House of Bass. It does a surprising amount, Joe was bouncing my floor about with a 100w valve amp. Was running it really dirty though. Easily outdid the Marshall 2x15 by a very large margin.
Doesn't it need a lot of power to get big bottom from it though? Not that 300 watts isn't a lot, but you know what I mean. onehappybunny, I was perving on that cab earlier. I've just splashed out on my Tech 21 head though so I might not have the funds for a cab until the new year, but it might be in the running! I fancy looking at all the bases first though, so to speak.

Well, I'm a realist I've only got 300 watts to play with, so I dont think the compact will cut it. I'm looking forward to hearing Shockwave's vintage soon, mind (too big for me, though!)

I'm sceptical of the compact to be honest. I'm sure it's loud, but I'm not sure it would be full sounding enough for me. My ideal cab, in a world where I dont have hardly any storage space, noodly arms and a small car would be something like a 6x10, so to get that sound in a small, light package might take a miracle!

Now now, we'll have no science in this thread! Actually, a Barefaced Big One is the sort of thing I'm thinking of - unfortunately it's at least twice my budget, too
11. I'm considering getting a cab soon, but ideally I want something that will hold its own by itself, without being too massive or heavy. I'm intrigued by 2 way cabs like the SWR Triad (too heavy though) and the multi speaker offerings from Schroeder - what else is out there though? Something like a 15" speaker and a 12"/two 8" speakers in one box, that sort of crazy thing. Do cabs like this truely offer the best of both worlds, fat bottom and punch?
12. Sounds like my idea of hell.
13. Bought his landmark 300 head - excellent communication, and was kind enough to drop the amp off on his way through Reading. Smooth transaction (despite me being slightly hungover ) and a great amp by the looks of things, thanks!
14. That Talbo looks fun!
15. There's a picture of me somewhere playing a lovely Status at the Croft in Bristol, in nothing but a pair of white boxers. Thankfully, for you lot, I cant find it Edit* I tell a lie, here it is: ] Barefaced Bass - Clothing Optional.
16. I dont know any real theory, but it sounds like you're describing passing notes that eventually resolve to a note in the key of the song. Great musical effect, gives it some tension.
17. Providing the amp can safely handle a load as low as 2ohms (some Peaveys certainly can do this) then it will be fine - bear in mind the 4ohm internal speaker will draw more current and hence be louder than the 8ohm cab when they're both hooked up though.
18. I never ever use the volume control on basses, but I use it all the time on guitar to alter the amount of saturation at the amp. If I want quiet on the bass, I simply play quieter!
19. I'm rather looking forward to hearing that rig in action, Rob!
20. I'm running my ATK with full bass boost, mids flat and a slight treble boost. Through an Ashdown 4x10 combo I used the other day with the amp EQ flat it sounded immense. (I know it's not a 'ray, but close enough to count!)
21. Cool, I'll speak to my brother and let you know. If he's not able to make the detour I may well take it off your hands anyway via postage, although it's not as light as the LM2 I was looking for I think this might reproduce the tone I'm after a bit better.
22.
Dude thats just amazing!
Isn't it just As I'm feeling generous, here's another photo. Lovely birdseye maple neck. Body is chambered, so it's light as a feather. In fact, you can hear it all over my bands first demo here: www.myspace.com/ebolamonkey11
23. Well, the sounds samples on the site sound pretty tasty. I might in fact be in Reading on Saturday, too, although I'll need to speak to my brother to see if he wouldn't mind a detour on the way home to Bristol, if you're about that is.
24. My favourite band here, and a prime example of a Stingray at its best in a rock context: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEOBp-X2_wA
