1. What's the best approach to learn to effectively improvise over changes without learning to read? Is there a cheaty, sneaky way? I mean, is it best to learn all the scales in C# minor across the neck, commit them to memory as C# minor scales, and draw on that when the key happens to be... er, C# minor? Is it that simple?
2.
Mmmmm; odd that! Its a tried and tested method whcih works for more than it doesn't but, more to the point, ITS NOT THAT HARD. It is often dull and tedious, but its not hard.
But it is, it makes my brain hurt! I taught myself to sight read a cello piece once and my eyes nearly fell out. Mind you, all my guitar playing is based around a map of certain scales in my head and their fingerboard positions and ear for relative pitch and intervals, so I've probably learned to play in a way that hinders rather than helps. It can't be a good thing that half of my approach to playing is a visual "map" of the fingerboard. Bad habits die hard and all that.
3. I have absolutely no desire to learn to read dots on a page. However! I was attempting to solo over Jeff Beck's "Cause we ended as lovers" last night and I couldn't help but wish I had a greater understanding of how the chord changes progressed, and how this affected what notes to use. Alas, I'm sure the only way to develop this understanding is learning dratted theory.
4. If it were me, I'd scour for a cheap 'ray. Nothing like a Stingray, love 'em or hate 'em. Can't get enough of that tone, though.
5. Brilliant.
6. Just for the E usually. They work brilliantly.
7. Not my cup of tea either, but interesting approach.
8. I would say it's most likely to be the instrument being poorly earthed (you are earthing it by touching the strings). Ensure there is good connection between the bridge earth wire, any shielding in the cavity and the back of the pots to the earth connection on the output jack.
9.
Bland, record company tripe, can't stand the way she pretends to be wired, video just showing pretty drummer, rock music for those who don't like anything too challenging or dangerous. Cass is a dude though. I've seen SA years ago and I left after about half way through because of all of the above.
Lordy, lighten up will you? If you can't enjoy a simple rock song without being labelled a musical f***wit what's the world coming to!
10.
The chorus sends the hair on the back of my neck standing up. Even in 32 degree heat.
Ah, I love that tune. Great driving bassline, tasteful fills. Just what Cass does best.
11.
A bit hardcore but A Wilhem Scream.
+ a million.
12. A Wilhelm Scream are touring soon, I'll be catching them in Bristol in September... I've literally never been so excited about a gig before. Love this band to death!
13. You have to buy direct from Warmoth - it's quite pain free, but beware you may get stung for import tax/VAT whatever when the package arrives on UK soil. DHL phoned me in advance to clear it when I ordered from Warmoth. Brilliant stuff, by the way!
14. I've owned a few. I had an S2 classic new from Status and a graphite replacement neck for a p bass. They feel great, they're built great, and IMHO, after much deliberation, I think they sound pants compared to a wood neck. YMMV. Not a very musical bottom end, too woofy, and the top end sounds plastic-y for want of a better word. I think a wooden fingerboard paired to a graphite neck might improve matters but it certainly wasn't the tone for me.
15. I loved the prequels, but they were a totally different approach. More giant robots with human brains, less subtlety. They did get a bit contrived with the Tio Holtzman and Norma Cenva story arcs too.
16. I love my Warmoth guitar, they make great stuff. Nice bass!
17. I have no intention of derailing the thread, just clarifying my opinion, there's nothing more to add. Carry on!
18.
I did not perceive any arrogance at all. Saying someone is arrogant is a common defence statement that people sometimes use when they can't find anything else to have a go at. I can't find anything wrong with Janek's posts. Then again, I was called "patronising" by someone in another post about this - I notice that post has been deleted. The negative responses are a bit like a tribal thing I think - like football fans behaviour. Someone says something and it triggers a rush of hatred from envious people. I agree with an earlier comment you made - perhaps it is a UK thing - the one's with inferior talent just love to annihilate. I always thought arrogance was an offensive showing of superiority. That certainly was not the case with Janek's responses. And if people think that arrogance is someone displaying their ability/knowledge in their speciality area, then those people will never learn anything, because they assume they know better.
Yes, I called you patronising due to the particularly insidious way you belittle other members in order to make a point. I stand by it, as even in that post you've implied that anyone with a conflicting opinion must be of inferior talent!
19. I commisioned a new Status once. Bloody lovely thing, but again, more than I'll ever need and I couldn't justify having that much money tied up in an object. £600 is about my limit now for guitars.
20. Yep, a bit of lube will work wonders. I used to have one on a Jazz, brilliant bit of kit.
21. That finish reminds me of a cambozola.
22. I'm not even a bassist anymore but I want it!
23. Lovely guitar. I love the fact the bridge pickup angle is reversed to emulate the Hendrix sound (always seemed a more sensible direction to angle to me anyway - warmer highs and tigher lows!)
24. That's a beautiful bass.
