Bubinga,Zebrano,Mahogany,Redwood (Top),Wenge,Buckeye burl, and Ebony...for the nut. Scale is 34",Jims customwound the Humbucker (with single coil push/pull on the volume pot) 2 Bnd Kent Armstrong EQ (Stacked).... Oh and the P/U Cover...thats 30 pieces of wood....
Ah, "the sound of glue"
2. I think to come back into fashion, they would need to have been in fashion in the first place, right?
3. I don't know what magic venues you lot all play in that have the space to accomodate 3 bands bass rigs, 3 drumkits, 3 sets of guitar amps and cabs etc etc, but I've certainly not come across many! At nearly every gig I played with my last band someone shared the drumkit (minus snare and cymbals) bass cab, and guitar cabs. Pre-arranged by the promotor most of the time, but providing the band who wanted to use my kit asked beforehand I had no problem lending my cab and in a few instances my head. Once or twice I have lent my bass when someone has broken strings or had a problem with theirs. Obviously it's not all give give give, I've borrowed my fair share of other peoples backline as well. Whatever happened to community spirit among musicians?
4. It could use some coasters.
5.
Whilst I am aware that these polls are a crock, it is interesting to note that NONE of my favouries even registered. Why? Because the importance of a player is proportionate to the popularlity of the band he or she plays in, the public profile of those bands and the number of records they sell. So, even though there are some astonishing players out there that noone here has mentioned, they won't get any 'votes' because their music appeals to a minority, doesn't get played on tv or radio and doesn't get acknowledged by high volume sales. So, lets call this a 'Most Popular' poll rather than a 'Best' because, objectively, most of the players everyone here is raving about are pretty limited and, considering the full basket of skills, are likely to be found wanting.
Have you considered the possibility that you may just have poor taste in music?
6. I now have one bass which is probably worth under £300, and a £3k Triumph Speed Four. The motorbike gets far, far more use and induces more grins than playing bass though so it makes sense.
7.
I have to say the fundamental tone of my Retroactive is perfect - for me. I think it's got the most bottom-end clarity and guts that any of my basses have ever had, except poss my Groove fretless which is just monstrously huge!
I think it's probably because the tone in my head is pretty much unobtainable without a Stingray or Warwick I've found graphite basses letting me down in that regard - it's certainly not a bad tone, just not the one I want.
8. I think the fundamental tone of graphite has always left a little something to be desired to my ears - yes, it gives a nice high mid edge, but I've always found the bottom lacking the definiton of a wood neck. I found this on both my old Status S2 Classic and my current graphite necked P bass - my old wood necked Status S1 though didn't suffer from this.
9. At the moment, it's Brian J. Robinson from A Wilhelm Scream, Cass Lewis from Skunk Anansie, and that's about it. I can't say I've been inspired by many bassists of late, I'm listening to guitars more these days.
10.
Tried another track (5 to 9). I liked this track but I'm still hung up on the the harmonised Emo vocals. I'll work on it.....
Well, they're certainly not some trendy scene band if that's what you're worried about There's a parody of a modern record company executive in one of their videos which cracks me up: "I don't see your balls in your jeans. Your hair's not straight ironed... where are the glasses and the bandana? And sh*t kid, we've got no hope for you..."
11.
I'd advise all bass fans to check out anything by Erase Errata. Totally brilliant bassing on a Fender Jazz. Saw them live in '03, one of the best gigs I've seen.
They really remind me of fIREHOSE. Very Mike Watt-esq bass playing there. Edit - so yeah, if you like them, you might also like this: fIREHOSE - Brave Captain
12. Yeah, The Mars Volta rock. Juan Alderete is an animal on the bass, saw them live in London last year and he and the drummer were incredible.
13. Over compressed? Can't say I've noticed, but then my preferred listening volume is loud so it's probably a good thing.
14.
Had a listen to the Wilhelm Scream guys. Nice bass playing, but hated the tunes. Why do so many American rock bands have annoying, whiny "fratboy" vocals these days?
If by "these days", you mean the last 20 years, and by "American rock bands", you mean American hardcore punk bands, then the only answer I can give is because it sounds great to those who enjoy American hardcore punk bands
15. I have a lot of respect for Zappa's musicianship and original approach to writing music, don't get me wrong. His popular music, though, while technically out there and very impressive, seems to be technical for the sake of technical as far as I can make out. Doreen has a good tune, though... Anyway, I guess my point is, screw originality, I want something I can sing loudly in the shower.
16.
+2 on Career Suicide!
Right, that's 3 people, time to plug it some more! Some nice tapping in the intro, and the song itself is masterful. A Wilhelm Scream - The Horse Listen to the breakdown at around 1:20, some fancy fingerwork! A Wilhelm Scream - Jaws 3, People 0
17.
The development of 'popular' music stopped the day Frank Zappa died. Can't really think of anything released recently that stands out (for lack of listening to anything much recently), the bass playing on 'Fight With Tools' by Flobots is pretty decent though.
Poppycock. There are loads of bands making exciting music, you just need to look for it.
18.
Either of the Streetlight Manifesto records have some really sweet bass on them. 'Everything Goes Numb' probably has the better songs though. +1 on the latest Wilhelm Scream album too.
10-4! Somewhere in the Between by Streetlight is brilliant, I'm going to see them live in December again. Can't wait... brilliant bassist and drummer. And horn section. Just great in general really!
19. A Wilhelm Scream - Career Suicide. Absolutely stunning bass playing and it rocks.
20. I started on bass when I was 10, and really got into it because of Stuart Zender's playing. I taught myself guitar at around 14 though and since then have flitted between the two. In every band I've been in I've been the bassist, but since the demise of my last band I haven't touched my bass in over 3 months I think. Whenever I reach for an instrument now its my acoustic guitar.
21. Wil

Hells Bells

I saw them at Ashton Court one year. I thought they were great, but then again I was not in my usual state of mind.
22. It's a bit ugly, IMO. Body is too wide.
23. Well, it's a Galveston for a start. £198 is expensive for firewood.
24. I had one too, best small amp I've ever used by far!
25. Posting at the request of a mate: Ebay listing Don't anything else about it, sorry!
