1.
I'm trying to learn this on 3 instruments, quite a challenge. Seriously great track though, the horns are fabulous.
great album. Seen them live twice now, and the bassist is astounding, as are the horn section. Their re-recording of Keasby Nights by Catch 22 has some of the best modern ska bass playing I've ever heard!
2. Tom Waits - Chocolate Jesus
3. Elixers are IMO fantastic. They're now the only strings I'll use.
4. I used to use them - they had a good sound out of the box but went dead quite fast and felt coarse (not as bad as Rotosound .66s, though). Also, I did get the occasional dead string in a set, or the occasional string with odd overtones, which is the main reason why I stopped using them. They were quite like DR highbeams in sound and feel, come to think of it, but I far preferred the DRs.
5. A good preamp really brings an ordinary P bass to life, IMO. As far as boutique P basses go, I think it almost runs contrary to what the P is all about - it's the workhorse of the bass world. Simple, effictive, and you can pick up a great one off the rack from the likes of Fender, G&L and Lakland. Also, if I were to ever see a P bass with a buckeye burl top I think I might be sick.
6. The cosmetics don't matter one jot. I'm very much of the opinion that if you save up and spend your money on anything you can do whatever you like with it - if its a state when you sell it on then expect to not recoup your outlay. I think it's far more important to make sure your instrument is set up well and in good working order - chips, dents, scratches, dirt, all irrelevant. I do tend to look after my instruments, though, as it makes good financial sense.
7. Tom Waits - Blue Valentine
8. I used to have one and it was exactly the same. You can try raising the pickups, but I think it may be the fact that the stock pickups are just wound like that, to be honest.
9.
Errm, you're not offending anybody... that's actually what I was getting at when i said that the basic concept of PC is a good one unless it is taken to extremes (e.g. your blackboard example, which as far as I am aware is very much the exception rather than the norm -- it certainly never happened at my school in the 80s).
Nor mine. In fact most of the examples of "PC gone mad" I've ever heard of I can't attribute to personal experience, or the experiences of anyone I've met. Most of the time when you read about crazy stuff like that it's attributed to "a source" in the media. I wouldn't be suprised if most of it is made up to enrage the sort of people who use the term "PC brigade" and sell papers.
10. You're not the "crabcore" attack attack, right?
11. Stewie Griffin - Rocket Man. Amazing.
12. Wow! I bet that thing weighs a ton.
13. Maggot Brain. The live, Michael Hampton version. Favourite guitarist ever!
14. Poker Face is probably one of the most addictave pop songs I've ever heard. It's worse than crack. 15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlzuiFavtVw...feature=related Best pop performance I've seen in a long time. I think I want to marry her.
16. And me.
17. Best song of last year, hands down!
18. NOFX covering Olympia W.A. by Rancid. Great song.
19. A Roadster eh? He always had great tone. All in the fingers probably!
20. I don't know much about them to be honest, they might be ok for what they are. They might also be rubbish
21.
has there been to companys called status that make basses. cheers
Do you mean, have there been two different bass producers using the name Status? If so, yes, I believe some far eastern company has used the name in the past, churning out P bass copies and the like. Nothing to do with the exceptional basses made by Status Graphite.
22. All I know is my 1212L sounds the business with a bit of bass and treble boost on my amp. I may well be creating a mid scoop EQ to counter a mid humped cab, but whatever sonic cookery is going on seems to yield good results.
23. I had a BC Rich Mockingbird (which now belongs to Mr Foxen) that had a Varitone. Lovely big chicken head knob (ooh er) and it gave a nice set of quick tone options. Can't say I actually used it much, though!
24. Blimy! He did the pickup routing in mine in about 2 weeks, but this was a few years back now I guess.
25. Tom Waghorn of Waghorn guitars in Queen's Square did a great job of routing out my frankenstein P bass, you might want to give him a try if you haven't already.
