When should you play with a drum machine?
Wil replied to No1skewenjack's topic in General Discussion
Start off slow. Playing to a rhythm will be helpful, but only as long as you're not going too fast to make comfortable changes. Start slow then gradually up the tempo, and focus on getting every note to sound tight. Speed isn't the thing to strive for here, it's consistancy -
What some clever person needs to do is develop a mixing desk with an iphone adaptor

Yeah, there's the rub. No real way around it, as I say I just use it for acoustic guitar and vocals, just to get ideas down. All I can really suggest is amping up the bass and seeing if the ambient mic pics up on it.
-
I use it for rough demos on occasion, just for capturing acoustic guitars and vocals. What is it in particular you're having trouble with?
-
As long as it plays well or can be set up to play well, sounds good and isn't a total trackwreck I'd consider anything. If it's been neglected then that's haggling ammo, I can always do it up.

Although I don't get on with vibrato arms, I barely use a pick at all now since listening to Beck. He's a real maverick. Shame a lot of his output is a bit, er, "jazzy", but not in a good way
-
Can't go wrong with a bit of Beck, either! Does it hold tune alright with all the vibrato arm antics?
Do you want to hear my £60 Squier Strat? Just a quick noodle....don't judge me!
Nice playing. I think it might benefit from some nice new pups, though, but then what cheaper squier wouldn't? Not a bad shout for £60.

I was about to say, what this is lacking is a room full of drunken revellers, and then pow, half way through, there they are

Did a little recording tonight, in celebration of the fact I found the condenser microphone my brother lent me in the garage. Somewhat inspired by my current love of all things Tom Waits, I made a drum loop by hitting the sofa cushions with a wooden spoon for the bass drum, recording my dog Milo shaking himself dry for the hi hat, and then used the sound of a saucepan, glass tumbler and biscuit tin being hit with a wooden spoon for the snare sound. I am deadly serious I then added 2 tracks of acoustic guitar, one track electic guitar, fretless bass (my franken P thing), and then downloaded an iPhone Vibraphone app which I held up to the mic for a little bit of Vibraphone in the middle. Bit of reverb added to each seperate track, and then sped up the entire lot 2% to tighten up the mix. I whacked it up on my old myspace: www.myspace.com/ebolamonkey11 Enjoy! *Edit - have since added vocals and this song is now called "The Flood".

He had one of the 700s I think with the neck J pup. I really recommend them, I love mine. Chunky neck, but more rounded and more comfortable than a P neck IMO. It's almost like a rounder Warwick neck.
Those Tech21 heads are superb.... NICE!
Too right! Wipes the floor with the Markbass I used to have, this thing has warmth, bottom, and tubey grind in bucketloads!

Those P basses just look perfect. I WANT ONE!
Black headstock and nut would just complete the stealth fretless.
This bass did once have a black Status graphite neck with black hipshot tuners. The neck was worth vastly more than the bass though so eventually got sold on, not to mention the fact that it made the bass sound a bit muddy - last thing you'd expect a graphite neck to do, but horses for courses I guess!

Streetlight Manifesto - 99 Songs of Revolution. Newly released covers record. Don't think it's up to much so far, it's got a terrible, terrible cover of Just by Radiohead which tarnishes the whole affair. Awful. Great cover of Such Great Heights by The Postal Service at the end of the record, though.

Right! Well, after I had a good read through the excellent thread on neck shimming, I decided to whip the neck off. It turns out the gap wasn't as bad as I thought - it was more a case of my poor shimming job causing issues (I'd shimmed the length of the neck pocket, which meant I needed a fairly big shim, as opposed to shimming at the body end of the neck pocket to change the angle of the neck). So, freshly shimmed, the gap was small enough for me to live with. I cut some clear plastic from a blister pack of straplocks and placed a strip of this on each side of the neck as I slid it back into the pocket, and the neck is now rock solid. It really has made a difference, I can feel the strings resonating through the body quite strongly when I pluck a note now, which I couldn't before. Sustain seems improved as well. Pics of the beast are in the gear porn forum, in case you're wondering what this particular sow's ear looks like. Thanks for the advice all!

Here's my current lot. Ibanez ATK 300 - my main bass. Stringray tone, plays wonderfully, built like a tank, and cost about £250. Bargain. Tech 21 Landmark 300 head - best amp ever, fact. Tube sounds without the weight, price or hassle. Schroeder 1212L 4ohm cab - one hand lift, loud as I'll ever need, sounds great. Fretless parts P - mighty mite neck, encore body (from my first bass, sentimental value), dimarzio P and Aaron Armstrong soapbar pups, John East BTB01 preamp. Hohner B2A, strung with tapewounds. My "keep by the sofa in case I want to plonk about in front of the TV" bass. Warmoth thinline strat - chambered ash body, birdseye maple neck, schaller locking tuners, SD Invader pickup. I love this guitar to bits. Norman B18 cedar topped acoustic, tuned in D standard (prefer this tuning on acoustics for playing blues, easier bends!). I also love this guitar to bits! Note the high tech string height adjustment spacers, which are necessary due to the height adjustment grubs screws siezing in the £5 bent bit of cheese bridge. That's a whole 10p worth of mods, right there.

Toots and the Maytals. Some best of compilation or other. It might be gray and drizzley outside, but it doesn't feel like it when you're listening to Toots.

Sonic Boom Six - Play On. Some great remixes on this.

C.P.E Bach's Cello Concertio in A Minor, with Elgar's Cello Concertio in E Minor after that. Lovely.

I think you should go for a black refin personally. It'll help detract from the fact the body is shaped like a melted sweet
In my eyes that is the right way round. I prefer a revered P p/up gives far better highs
+1 on that!
