1.
He handled criticism and heated debate for a long time.. but it got to a point where it became relentless (IMO). I'm not suprised he switched his PC off an went elsewhere, tbh...
It's impossible to sit and refute every bit of contrary opinion, but that's all it is - opinion. Bass players will discuss bass equipment until the cows come home, and at the end of the day your product will stand up on its merits and the experiences of people who've used it. I think he should've just left people to it, he didn't have to leave the forum, but his call I guess.
2. If you go around deleting conflicting opinions from threads relating to your product, or dismissing any discussion relating to said product with the "I'm an engineer, so your opinion is invalid" card, it leaves a bad impression (particularly when experienced bass players are the ones contributing to the discussion). Simple as that really. I can't knock his products, as I haven't tried them. Some people like them, some don't. He certainly wasn't hounded out, he chose to go and divert his attention elsewhere as I recall. The way I see it, is if you're going to promote a product on an internet forum, you need to accept that your product will be discussed and picked apart. We do it for products from every other brand - I don't see why being a BC member should grant immunity from that when people will be parting with good money for the end product at the end of the day.
3. It's trial and error with strings I find. I can use elixer bass and acoustic strings with no problems, but the electric guitar strings, despite being marked stainless steel, have a nickel coating which sets my hands off quite badly.
4.
If it's an allergy, wouldn't it affect both hands?
IME, the picking hand isn't as badly affected due to the calluses.
5. Not all stainless sets are created equal and some have a suprising amount of nickel in them. Nickel allergy is the most likely cause, I have it and EB strings set me off. Try DRs, D'Addarios, Rotosounds, Elites or my personal favourite, Elixers.
6. Sounds like a clever idea to me! Now, off to B&Q...
7.
If you are going to build up the neck pocket a bit, IMO you need something light but rigid (ie. not anything rubbery or flexible that would absorb or damp vibration). Polyfilla is not such a stupid idea, as it would be very easy to work, and then smooth/level out with sandpaper or whatever when it has dried. Once you have it as you want it, then you could apply some thinned varnish or even thinnned epoxy (so that it soaks in) - that would make it harder and more rigid again. You probably can't go too far wrong doing that... Alan
Really? Well, if my crazy idea isn't so crazy, I might try that. I can't do the veneers thing as I lack tools, but I could certainly shape some filler.
8. I love Paul Gilbert. He's got a sense of humour, and most of his work is really melodically interesting. That twin neck thing was a bit gash, but this rocks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES1RypBww_g
9.
Then simply build up the neck heel with Polyfilla. Honestly, do we have to hold your hand through the whole thing? Hold on though [serious thought for a moment] ... is this the neck I sold you last year? Just wondering...
Yeah, it's been on the bass for a goodly while. I'm just considering sprucing it up a touch so I can get the best out of it. Really nice neck - I'd like to do it justice. So, no one has had a luthier do this before I take it? Was mainly wondering if it was going to break the bank or not. I guess I'd better have a ring round.
10. Good idea, that! Seriously though, I can only imagine I'd make it worse than before I started. I'm not particularly skilled in the woodworking arts. Polyfilla, on the other hand...
11. If I tried such a thing I'd probably end up with maple veneer glued to my face
12. I don't think being new is really anything to do with it - lots of new posters manage to ask for advice without their threads decending into slanging matches. I think that is a reflection on the way in which you responded to the very much run of the mill interjections you recieved in your thread, smurfitt.
13. I've got a parts P bass with a mighty mite fretless neck. The body is from a mid 90s encore. The neck pocket is a touch too big, so its currently wedged in with some bits of card, and although its playable its not as nice as it could be. My question is, how easy is it to reshape a neck pocket to make it fit an aftermarket neck? I assume it would require filling with a block of wood and reshaping, not something I'd fancy doing myself. In which case, what's the damage likely to be from a luthier - has anyone had this sort of thing done before? Thanks!
14. Comedy gold. Chip, meet shoulder.
15.
That is one fine looking bass!!
Christ on a bike that's a good looking P.
16. Impressive sense of entitlement for a newbie!
17. So far I've been using mine pointed up too, just wondered if maybe pointing down was the ideal for bass response or some such gubbins. I'm happy with it as it is, of course, it sounds great!
18. I like the look of the Sansamp pedals myself. Danelectro pedals look cheap and nasty, usually, and I'm not a fan of EHX big box pedals, particularly the ones with the "electrocute yourself at home in 2 easy steps!" power adaptors. We need more effects like this: http://www.deviever.com/
19. Which way do you position the cab for best results? Angled speaker pointing at the floor, your ears, or the cab horizontal? Does it even matter? Yours, Interested of Bristol.
20. Now come on, be reasonable. Some of us are banned from AdultFriendFinder.
21. All guitars should be that colour.
22. I thought as much. I had to sate my thirst for conflict elsewhere, it was most irksome.
23. This thread is shaping up to be a fine afternoon's entertainment.
24.
Mate the whole of 'Nighthawks at the Diner' is Jazz and it's brilliant.
I've not got round to that one yet, but it's on the list. I've been working backwards from the industrial junkyard blues stuff, and was suprised what a pleasant departure HOSN was.
