Oh and there was cake! Yummy

Yep great day again folks, thanks I haven't decided what I'm gassing for yet, MAS45 cab or two to upset TheRev, a Fearless cab from Guy at Tricky Audio with a super sparkle finish, a 5 string upright, a Yamaha Silent bass, an EA amp, Geoff's ability, a full circle and one of many fancy preamps?
-
We were probably a bit far away anyway in Mere Green near Sutton Coldfield, but I had to come back home via Lichfield and I'd actually been to Burton to do my proper job all day yesterday so I might be a bit tired today! Right I'm setting off!

Cool have a safe trip :-) I'm having an after gig mcfilth not far that from Bluejay's b&b, I bet she is tucked up in the warm rather than sitting in a cold van eating questionable burgers? Lol. See you all tomorrow!

Why did you choose your luthier?
stingrayPete1977 replied to BassApprentice's topic in General Discussion
I had to read that twice. I was wondering why you were going to a lazy luthier!
Haha,no she isn't lazy at all I took the bass in without a appointment after finding what could have been a serious problem and she had it sorted for me to collect the following Saturday. Very good service from Helen at Tim Toft violins, credit where it's due -
OWWWWWWwwww go on then, It's just so adorable, i can't help showing it off I think this is one of only a couple of E series in the uk, some info on the early L2000E you might find interesting, Some of this I have not put in the comparison between this and a sabre. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/190734-79-sabre-v-81-gl-2000e-not-very-distant-brothers/ 1) The fingerboard on the Early L2000E and some early L2000 is unstained Ebony not rosewood. 2) Leo curved the finger board bottom like he did on the early fender basses see pic. 3) The L2000E had a skunk stripe down the back of the neck on both maple and ebony boards. 4) Leo also went back to the 3 screw tilt neck, From L2000E and then on to the L2000 5) Slot pole pieces, When you move these 90 Deg slot inline with string or across, it sounds different, slightly. 6) The L2000E and for the first year had "Schaller" stamped tuners, with the norm alloy tuning heads to cut down weight. 7) Like the early Musicmans Leo started the serial numbers off from B00... 8) Series 1 pre amps together with the early slot pickups on the early L2000E the OP is huge so were tamed down as were too powerful i think the transients from the pups were too much and were blowing chips, anyone with info on this ? EDIT..... just found this from a post basses from Leo forum... explains "8" a bit better... "The first E's had a preamp that did not allow the treble knob to function when the bridge pup is solo'ed. This was due to the early E preamps' chip not being able to handle the hard transients generated by the MFD's. The second generation E preamp was slightly tweaked with capacitors, and allowed the treble control to function in all positions, including the bridge pup solo'ed. E's and later L2000's all used the same preamp from early 1982 to 1992. Sound differences? Second-gen preamps sound clean and deep, adding big lows and highs that are not harsh or tinny. The bottom end on first-gen preamps can knock down buildings. Nothing sounds as mammoth as a first-gen E in OMG mode, and add in slot pole pickups, you can adversely affect the sperm count of the first 20 rows" Thanks El tookay.
Cracking, I like the earlier ones without the eye gouger too although it does look ok with the 5 string layout. I do wonder why he went three bolt though it was never great all THREE times he tried it!

Why did you choose your luthier?
stingrayPete1977 replied to BassApprentice's topic in General Discussion
It wasn't actually meant to be that incendiary ... I am genuinely asking if a one person operation, ie. a luthier, really does produce a better product than one that has the backing of a considerable R&D budget and state of the art production facilities. As for my analogy of cars ... a lot of people love and enthuse about British sports cars, they are undoubtedly things of great beauty, but if I was going on a 1000+ mile trip across Europe I'd rather take a VW Golf.
Ultimately they are just lumps of wood bolted together with mainly generic hardware screwed on, the guy with his name on the headstock is likely to spend more time and effort getting it right than a Cort factory worker working to feed his family in korea. The best bet is a sort of mass produced custom imo, if the luthier builds a random bass with funny pickup spacing and crap hardware because it's what the customer wants it will be crap but a luthier that has a sort of base model design that the customer works around then everyone wins and the builder has done things like the body cut, neck pocket and headstock/tuner layout many times. -

stingrayPete1977 replied to BassApprentice's topic in General Discussion
Are "Luther built" basses any better than those produced by larger manufacturers? I wouldn't necessarily expect a guy in a backstreet garage to build a better car than a well known manuacturer in a multimillion pound factory.
Why do people always skew these sort of statements one way? Why compare them against a back street garage rather than a well equipped workshop with experienced craftsmen (women, my last repair was done by a lady luthier a few weeks ago)? -
I'm definitely guilty of being in one of the bands this conjures up, lol.
-
Of course you must remember that Cort also have one of the worst reputations in the world for poor working conditions whilst you are suggesting we find a better whipping boy.
-
My Cort comments aren't snooty at all, I actually like the look of the Curbow, but I wouldn't spend USA Gibson money on one.

Can you not see that the younger person will at least be able to enjoy a fraction of the Beatles that you did yet being dead will completely stop someone enjoying anything after their demise? -
I dont mind the look of it but it's not exactly wow is it?
Almost every gig, what is it with drunk punters and doors!!!
Loading the van after a posh wedding gig a few years ago I pleasantly shouted "Gangway!" as I approached with a large speaker cab to the usual clump of folk in the corridor after everyone else has left, I'm not sure if they were not familiar with the term I used, I thought it was a common one? or in their drunken state they may have thought I shouted "get out the way!", either way it ended with a toe to toe confrontation in the car park!

Being born 25 later allows you to enjoy everything someone born in 1952 has plus an extra 25 years worth of new music, there might be a much better band than the Beatles in 30 years time! -
Looks like a Cort to me, Gibson and basses don't work for me other than the ripper/grabber, make a ripper 5 string and we'll talk.
-
And five strings!

What was the first bass you had GAS for?

Warwick Jazzman, went to buy one and the preamp was broken straight out of the box! Bought a Stingray instead because the money was burning a hole in my pocket. -
Music shops -any wonder they're going under?
stingrayPete1977 replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
£1850 and the previously considered alternative was a £729 Martin DRS. I suspect the shop probably made more out of the deal. Anyway, I wasn't actually looking for thanks; experience has taught me to expect very little from guitar shops
But the shop doesn't just buy them all in for £500 each and earn more off more expensive sales, it's quite possible sometimes that the cheaper version has more in it for the shop, less so for the same brand granted but a known brand that sells like Squier can force a better deal for themselves than the shop, lots of £50 cuts from lots of Squier basses is better than a £100 cut from a bass that doesn't sell. The chinese P bass deal with an amp and strap could be bought in for say £100 and sold for £199 many times over coming up to christmas, the no doubt much nicer and better value for money Squier deal selling for lets say £249 might be costing the shop £175, that expert advice has got the buyer a better bass and a useable amp but you've cost the shop £25! Stack 'em high sell 'em cheap! -
BSX Allegro Bridge/pickup issue

Bass Direct in the uk might be worth an email, Mark Stikley is the boss there and must have a contact at BSX as a dealer for their (lovely!) basses. -

stingrayPete1977 replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
And there's the reason why the shop boy should have zipped it. You were quite right. It's happened to me before now. Last time, this obviously well-heeled guy was buying an acoustic for his son and I talked him up to a Martin D18. The assistant didn't even thank me, the shonky bastard.
As with the Squier story above though this is looking at it as both an outsider and an enthusiast, the cheap package deal the assistant was trying to sell to the lady probably had twice as much profit available for the store than the Fender (squier) one, possibly more, same goes for the Martin D18, its possible that a ticketed £250 acoustic has more margin for the store than a £1250 acoustic.
