1. Check your PMs for some Melvin goodies.
2. My current lot have set up a website on bandzoogle, apparently it was the best the bunch according to the guy that did it, and our collective opinion of the templates and examples. I've set up a site myself on wordpress, and it was ok - nothing as complicated as a band website though
3. My iGig's got a hanging hook. Discovered it about a year after I bought it.
4. ...as voted for by the Music Radar readership: http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/the-60-greatest-bassists-of-all-time-279007/1 ...with a slightly surprising Number One. Another day another poll. The interesting stuff in these things is who makes the lower rankings.
5.
I wonder if they've seen this thread
They have
6. My latest band's name was inspired by a interior furnishings accident in a caravan park in a north Devon seaside town.
7. Bass Player magazine now have a regular "what we screwed up last time" page.
8. I am ready to maim and kill having read that talkbass post. "Please complete this transaction as you are legally obligated" aieee
9. I'm down for the Borderline gig with gig chums as well. Seen Godsticks a few times before as well, probably all at The Peel. Tried to see you at the Underworld once, but the gig time was advertised an hour late and we missed you
10.
Would be interested to find out if there are any British jazz classics from this era?
Ah, read the question Tone. Have a go with Hatfield And The North. I find (for example) Soft Machine a bit too barmy. Hatfield are post-Caravan whimsy-prog, but just onside from the madness of Soft Machine. (Having said that, SM in their very recent years before Hugh Hopper died were brilliant). Check out all four Hatfield albums - try the original Eponymous and The Rotters Club first, then more recent archive releases Hatwise Choice: Archive Recordings 1973-1975, Volume 1 and Hattitude: Archive Recordings 1973-1975, Volume 2. Here's "Going Up To People And Tinkling" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDepecCm0pw
11. Al Di Meola's "Elegant Gypsy" as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Siq2qkINyPY Al Di Meola, Jan Hammer, Steve Gadd, Anthony Jackson.
12. Everyone goes with Billy Cobham's first album, but I'm a big fan of the second one Crosswinds. The opening track is in 17/16. Have fun! Also I love the first couple of Return To Forever albums, but they're a bit more latin than fusion. Listen to them anyway
13. Try Cafe OTO in Shoreditch, This fella's on tomorrow night. Join in everyone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyPSFcGqTqY
14. Later that same day, the story continues http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9HoBYl6_XQ
15. Ask for some evidence of their ability via youtube clips, soundcloud, mp3s etc. And ask what their previous experience in other bands is. No demo = no audition.
16.
Ok, I've got to ask... what is 'Post Rock'? 'Slow melodic themes', 'Seemingly ambiguous chords'
Sounds like Red-era King Crimson
17. Here's an article Bryan Beller wrote for Bass Player magazine in August 2010. It's a bit metal-oriented, but contains good tips about what all the different frequencies in your sound are doing. http://www.bassplayer.com/article/monitors-in-metal--cleaning-up-the-low-end/4996
18. George Murray. What happened to him after Scary Monsters?
19.
VDGG were a good band
Still are!
20. Sad to hear Nic's gone.
This is sad, didnt one of kraftwerk suffer a heart attack on stage in australia a couple of months ago,i think he survived though.
That was Fritz Hilpert, who had a minor heart attack (if there is such a thing) before performing at Global Gathering in Melbourne, November 2008. Fritz is now alive and well, I saw him (and the rest of Kraftwerk) last Saturday night in Dusseldorf.
21. There's Moog Taurus bass in WTSHNN if anyone's interested. U2 would be rubbish with a flashy bassist. AC's perfect for the job.
22. Play in standard tuning until they make their minds up.
23. As well as Denmark St, check out Ivor Mairant's on Rathbone Place and Chappell's on Wardour St. Both an easy walk from Denmark St. Also Hobgoblin on Rathbone place for the more esoteric instruments. Also, check the 12 Bar on Denmark St for live. If you want someone to look after your underwear junky girlfriend while you go effects shopping, I'm sure there'll be plenty of basschat volunteers.
24.
when they come off inside the ear
*runs off sniggering*
