There were a couple of pics of Jamaaladeen Tacuma in the July Bass Player mag with his DiPinto Belvedere Deluxe bass. I'm keen on buying one of these so just wondered if anyone has seen or played one of these basses?
Bump! Me too - I've had one in the back of my mind since I saw Tom Herbert playing one with Acoustic Ladyland at a gig at the Spitz. Any other sightings or idea where they can be tried/bought? Thanks!

And somehow I forgot one of my own favourites.... the mid-90s version of King Crimson, with Tony Levin and Trey Gunn: (segues into...) and
Monkeyboy... and err... showaddywaddy? Havent I seen some of the bigboys, like Marcus for example, have a bassplayer play bass whilst they do their thing!?
Good point. Last time I saw Victor Wooten (at the Jazz Caff a couple of years ago) he had Anthony Wellington on 6-string. It may well have been this gig actually:

Last week I saw The Humans play at the Scala in London - the line-up was Toyah Wilcox on vocals, Robert Fripp on guitar, Bill Rieflin on bass, and Chris Wong on bass (see www.myspace.com/wearethehumans for more info). All drum parts (not every song had them) came out of a magic box. What other bands have two bassists? The only ones I can think of right now are Ned's Atomic Dustbin and T*ts Of Death.

I've just completed a purchase from fleabag (see http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=75463) - all went according to plan, a very quick delivery and lots of speedy communication about well pretty much anything and everything. Buy with confidence! All thumbs up.
I always enjoyed playing along with 'look away' by Big Country. The time signatures in the Firth of Fifth instrumental are a pretty mixed bag and contain bars of 13/16 and 15/16, as mentioned earlier - the rest is pretty much 4/4, although sometimes subdivided to sound more tortuous: the second bar of the instrumental is 4/4 subdivided as 3, 3, 3, 3, 4. The 13s are best counted as 3, 3, 3, 4 and the 15s as 3, 3, 3, 6. I've played this song about a million times with various Genesis tribute bands, so I'll vid a version of the instrumental later and post it here. See http://www.youtube.com/user/toneknob for other Genesis basslines and (slightly fudgey) 12-string moments. I'll do the instrumental to Robbery as well if anyone's interested.

I ordered an Analogman Bi-Comprossor on July 21 2008. It turned up yesterday! 18 months on the waiting list, about a week for delivery once it'd been built. Very prompt and friendly email contact - Mike didn't mind the occasional gentle reminder and helped out with techie advice too. And he ahem underestimated the parcel's value for VAT purposes

Hello! The Invisible Lead Soup are gigging tonight at the Cross Kings, on York Way near King's Cross Station, London N1 - As usual we'll play some Soup favourites, plus one or two we've not done for a while. The Cross Kings is a couple of minutes walk from Kings Cross station, and unsurprisingly a load of buses go that way too. The full address is 126 York Way, London N1 0AX for those of you with satnav; also here's a map link: http://preview.tinyurl.com/yk6samy. We're on about 8.30, but you can get there before to say hi and have a drink or two. There's a few other bands on, so it'll be busy: you can see Fighting Fiction (described on myspace as Indie/Rock/Punk), The World On Fire (Alternative/Rock) and Ryker Sear (Rock/Glam/Rock - they double rock!). Check out our facebook page (address below) for more info - you'll find the event's flyer there too. It won't get you in any cheaper but you'll have a handy reminder AND a special souvenir of the night. Here's some handy links for the night, top prize goes to whoever looks at all of them: http://www.thecrosskings.co.uk http://www.myspace.com/fightingfiction http://www.myspace.com/theworldonfire http://www.myspace.com/rykersear Tony Soup Bass find us on the internet! http://www.thesoup.co.uk (probably more to listen to) They said stuff about us! From www.modculture.info: "Sometimes all a mod needs to keep happy is some mid-60s beat-pop. Step forward The Invisible Lead Soup. The London five-piece - Mark, Colin, Tony, Ted, and Tim - possess the harmonies of vintage US folk-rockers, mixed in with the pop-nous of Steve's Winwood and Marriott. The Zombies and Rubber Soul-era Beatles are obvious influences, whilst the driving rhythms and understated vocals on tracks such as 'Brand New Shirt' and 'What She Said' are also reminiscent of contemporary acts such like The Higher State and Beep Seals. The subtle but fluid Hammond organ playing is an added bonus to the psych-beat treats." From www.pleasureunitbar.com: "Invisible Lead Soup are five discerning London gents with a love of fuzzy 60s garage nuggets and a bagful of sparkling beat pop gems. Imagine, if you will, Ray Davies and Steve Marriot hanging out with Television, in a perfumed garden, possibly sipping tea and looking particularly sharp. Regulars at London town's top swinging live nitespots will testify to the Soup's irresistible jangly guitar & organ fuelled onslaught and winning harmonies" From www.soundsxp.com: "Invisible Lead Soup are purveyors of whimsical 60s pop, the sort that appeared on purple Pye labels, or on Decca, Deram or Immediate, bringing to mind the Zombies, the Kinks, the Eyes or the Bonzos. You could close your eyes and imagine that Jason King is stood next to you, nodding his approval of the band with a growled 'groovy' while he eyes up the chicks."

You'll find loads in 70s Genesis, Crimson and Yes: Firth of Fifth, Battle of Epping Forest, The Cinema Show, Dance on a Volcano (the ending of the Trick of the Tail version), Robbery Assault and Battery, Deep in the Motherlode; Awaken, Gates of Delirium; Starless, Schizoid Man (bonus points for Discipline - everyone's playing in a different time sig)
I'm with Direct line for my home insurance & it will cover my gear upto whatever I specify I need & have double checked & is covered worldwide for semi pro use (I should be so lucky!).
Direct Line were vague with me about overseas use, which was one of the reasons I stopped using them. No precise in-car policy (musicguard are very clear about this), and also no cover if you're earning money from gigging.
-
I did a quick tot-up of my gear's (estimated) price and it came in at a surprising 5-figure plus sum, so I decided it's time to kick Direct Line to the kerb for instrument insurance and go specialist. I looked at a load of providers and went with MusicGuard in the end. I think what swung it was their percentage "out of the house" policy, where you can define how much of your gear is likely to go travelling with you. Others I looked at were: www.quotiva.co.uk www.allianzmusicalinsurance.co.uk www.eandl.co.uk www.victorcknight.co.uk www.larkinsurance.co.uk www.endsleigh.co.uk/musical-instruments www.clarionins.com I can't remember exactly why I rejected the others, but there must have been good reasons What they do ask for though is (a) proof of ownership in the event of a claim and (2) vintage and rare gear needs a recent valuation (within three years). So I asked them what constitutes proof of ownership. A picture with me and the equipment, or a receipt detailing the equipment. What I did was take a dated digital picture of everything with a hard copy of the policy in shot. As for valuations, I asked what constituted vintage or rare, and they said that's up to me - if it's not easily replaceable then it qualifies. Today I picked up a valuation from a pro for two guitars, and one came in £1k more than I'd guessed at, the other £500 more. So up goes the premium, but then again that's the point of it really, I suppose.

Hello Somehow I missed the October 2009 edition of Bass Player magazine - the one with Mike Inez on the cover. Does anyone have a copy they don't want any more, or know of somewhere that I could lay my hands on one somewhere in London? Thanks! Tony

-
Grolsch washers here, on all my on-stage basses. Extremely reliable and I've never had one ping off. I've got them on my Stingray, and it fits in the case fine. Recently the material of the washer has changed though - from the rubbery substance of old to a slightly stiffer plasticky feel. Anyone else noticed? Also, Grolsch washers make good thuddy plectrums.

http://www.nme.com/rate/bassplayer/start Last time I looked, Jaco was on 4.63 out of 10, and the chap from Arctic Monkeys was doing better than James Jamerson.
