1.
It's strange, 'cos he's responsible for some great guitar moments.. the solo on 'Burning Rope', for example. Lovely. But some of his stuff sounds awkward.
Never been much of a fan of Burning Rope to be honest. A bit clunky lyrically, and the solo doesn't grab me I'm afraid. Much prefer The Lady Lies from that album.
Then again, we're talking about the bloke that came up with the bass part for 'No Reply At All'... and then a few years later stopped bothering creating parts with any redeeming features.
Another bit of surprising bass-playing from latter Genesis is the instrumental at the end of Living Forever on We Can't Dance. A minute or two's brief excitement in another otherwise endless landscape of mediocrity on that album.
 2.
Great bassist...average guitarist imho.
Mike was a fantastic rhythm and acoustic/12-string guitarist on Genesis material up to Steve Hackett's departure - then taking on lead guitar duties as well pushed everything else on to the back burner. Shame.
 3. Check out the Two Tribes wikipedia page, you'll see that the bassline existed before Trev and ZTT got involved. It's not impossible that NWR came along and made a better job of it though.
 4.
I might go to see one of the Hackett 'Regenesis' shows in October, I've seen some very positive reviews.
I saw Steve Hackett and band at the Hammersmith Odeon earlier this year. Tribute band ReGenesis weren't taking part though The "Mike Rutherford" of the band is Lee Pomeroy - he had a custom lefty bass/12-string built for him by 3R Guitars, see http://www.3rguitars.co.uk/twin%20neck.htm. Also it's impossible to work out what he's doing as he's left-handed *and* plays with the strings upside-down.
 5. Don't go running when listening to Seconds Out. Too many odd time sigs, you'll keep falling over They're all good from Trespass to Abacab and the first half of Genesis. From 1977's And Then There Were Three, quality starts dropping off due to Phil Collins' first divorce and the slush starting to creep in, despite everyone telling him to go do a solo album and get it out of his system. After "Home By The Sea" finishes on Genesis, pretend nothing else happened
 6. Not sure how much help it is, but this is fantastic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBWY8oAnnww
 7.
cack-handed shed builders.
I'll add that to my list of potential future band names. Thanks!
 8. I'm going to de-couple the constraint corridors and upshunt our clear sky leverage on this one.
 9.
This was a great gig- I remember when it was first aired and yes, funny that bassist and guitarist switch for this number.
Explanations why Gail Ann Dorsey and guitarist Mark Plati switch instruments here http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f19/bowies-ashes-ashes-8719/ and here http://www.bowiewonderworld.com/chats/dbplati0800.htm Conclusion appears to be "we fancied a change"
 10. Here's the clip if anyone's interested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFhtHrBLgAk
 11.
Been following these guys for the best part of 2 years now. Did anyone go to the clinic at Morley College last week? An intimate 2 hours of playing and chat. Well worth the £10.
Would have gone with a bit more notice, as Morley College is just round the corner from here. Just signed up for tickets to the VU gig in November (thanks for the tip Mike!)
 12. I was once given one of these It's erm a thing to put a bottle of wine in. It went on eBay
 13. Probably 12" of Bowie's punctuation-heavy "Heroes"/"Helden" b/w "Heroes"/"Héros" runners-up: JAMMs "Whitney Joins The JAMMs" promo Dread Zeppelin "Un-Led-Ed" picture disc LP PMac "We All Stand Together" pic disc 7"

 15.
Why has this thread gone on past this post?
I'm still trying to process "...in his own modest way..."
 16.
I have tried to listen to his playing objectively, but its just not my thing, just a bundle of notes really
Listen to any music objectively and it's just a bundle of notes.
 17.
Argh, I had no idea they were playing!
Me neither - this totally passed me by and I'm usually pretty good at keeping my ear to the ground and/or finger on the pulse.
 18.
You know that 'Standing - by the wall. We kissed as the guns fired over our heads' line. That was Bowie looking out the studio office window and seeing producer Tony Visconti in the street swapping saliva with his girlfriend du jour. True story.
Maybe true story, if you believe that Tone's mistress (girlfriend du jour wasn't Mrs Visconti) claims that "Heroes" was complete by the time the affair started, according to the footnote on the "Pushing Ahead of The Dame" blog entry about the song, http://bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2011/05/11/heroes/ - one of the very few blogs I've seen that is compelling page-turning stuff for the middling-to-serious Bowioid. (If "page-turning" is something you can apply to blogs)
 19.
I saw them at Glynde a couple of weeks ago. It was a baking hot day, I was maybe 5 or 6 rows off the front. The sound was, stella, unreal, awesome, perfect even, a perfect match fo rthe band. Well chuffed to have been able to see them when the crew and the kit was all working like one beautiffuly well oiled machine. Cant believe the stories of Hyde Park, how rubbish is that, I'd have demanded my money back....
There was a bit of a delay getting Chic going at Love Supreme - can't remember exactly what the problem was though. But otherwise as you say, it was a fantastic performance. Best set of the day.
 20. It's just one bloke's opinion. Heroes is a brilliant album. So is Low, also Lodger. Scary Monsters as well for the first 6 tracks. But my favourite current Bowie instrumental is Crystal Japan. I only discovered it last week, it's an outtake from Scary Monsters and appears on the All Saints compilation album of instrumentals. It's on Spotify: David Bowie – All Saints
 21.
Knocking On Heavens Door! Jeeez I was in my motor and on my way by then, thankfully.....
I'm now calm enough to mention the two encores... Sam And Dave's "Hold On I'm Coming", and Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up". Great songs each, but they need a bit of groove and swing in them. BF tried but they really didn't work
 22. Yeah - I've got the BFJO album, and it's nice enough but not Saturday night headline material, The odd early Roxy number was nice, but to follow Remake/Remodel with a snooze cover of Knocking On Heavens Door was criminal. As were the two encores.
 23.
Chic was the best performance I think I've ever seen live, staggeringly good, I was only about 3 rows off the front dead center, and the sound was absolutely spot on too. Brilliant.
Agreed - I was about 10-12 people back from the stage, central, sound was amazing. Mrs Tone wondered why I was getting antsy about getting a good place for Chic, but realised the fuss after the show. Loved the selection of songs as well, and wished they'd had the 15 mins or so more to play the songs from the Glastonbury set that they had to chop. Anyone else think they should have headlined?
